Chairman’s Report 2017 Annual Report

2017 was a rebuilding year for the Auckland Table Tennis Association after parting ways with long-time naming rights sponsor Cathay Pacific. The Association continues to work on finding and confirming a suitable replacement naming-rights sponsor, and this remains a priority for the future. Despite not having the benefit of naming-rights sponsorship a number of projects of significance were completed during the 2017 season resulting in another successful year for the Association.

Perhaps the most noticeable project during the 2017 season was the long awaited Facility Development project, a joint project undertaken in conjunction with Auckland Badminton Association in order to cater for demand at the Auckland table tennis stadium and Badminton Hall at the Gillies Avenue site. The internal structure of the facilities was developed to cater for future redevelopment and to improve access. The project was the culmination of five years of work including an Auckland Council funded feasibility study, gaining the support of Albert- Eden Local Board, and securing appropriate levels of funding in order to proceed. The Association is indebted to the Lotteries Commission, Pub Charity Limited, and Blue Sky Community Trust for providing funding support that enabled the project to be completed just in time for the start of the table tennis event at World Masters Games 2017. The project was a major undertaking for the Association and we are pleased that the feedback from the finished product has been very positive.

Project Ping Pong, the joint table tennis development project delivered across the greater Auckland and Northland region came to a conclusion in June 2017. Project Ping Pong was partially funded by Foundation North in its final year of operation. The vision was always to make the position of Northern Region Development Officer financially self-sustainable and it was with great pleasure that the Association took the exciting step of employing Eberhard Kleiser full-time in July 2017. Eberhard is now primarily conducting development activities within Central and East Auckland, however does a degree of contract work in other regions. In addition, Shane Warbrooke conducts development work in Central Auckland and Pat Low continues to conduct development work primarily in East Auckland. The net effect of the development work has been growth in the number of people participating in table tennis at grass roots and club level. During the 2017 season the Association has witnessed increased numbers of teams entering the Auckland Interschools table tennis competition and Interclub, increased numbers of stadium keyholder members, and increased usage of the Auckland table tennis stadium by casual hirers and school groups. Long may this continue.

The Association is committed to continuing, and subsidising, its junior development coaching programmes including Junior Club, Day Club Under 19 training, Girls’ Coaching, School Holiday Coaching programmes, and the Hosting Inclusive Table Tennis special needs programme.

Locally, the Association continued its annual programme of regional tournaments. The Auckland Open was held in August 2017. The finals evening was once again hosted by the charismatic Chris Herlihy and saw another good crowd in attendance. Special thanks to our committed volunteers, umpires, and of course the Auckland Open event sponsors, Lim Brothers Import & Export Company Ltd., Penberthy Insurance, Anran International (NZ) Ltd., Ray White – Broadway, and Commute Transportation Consultants. In addition, product sponsorship was received from Lone Star Restaurant, The Warehouse Newmarket, Coca-Cola, and Jim Coad which added to the spectator experience.

The 2017 Auckland Open Men’s singles champion, Teng Teng Liu, won the event for the fifth time, despite a spirited effort by up and coming super-star Nathan Xu. The Open Women’s title was won by defending champion Tianyi Li defeating the ageless Gina Liu who appeared in her first Auckland Open Women’s singles final. It was great to have the Fijian international team compete in the 2017 Auckland Open, and the Association hopes to secure entries from more international teams and players in the coming years.

There have been several requests from members, and players around New Zealand, requesting Auckland to increase its number of regional tournaments for the upcoming seasons and this is something the Association will continue to explore.

The Association is committed to continuing its High Performance coaching programme. Wei Zhong Jiang (Head Coach) oversaw and delivered the Auckland representative squad coaching, and was ably assisted throughout the 2017 season by Assistant Coach Tianyi Li. Josh Alexandre, Gina Liu, and Phillip Xiao were also regular contributors.

The 2017 New Zealand Open was held in with a number of Auckland teams successfully winning titles including the Open Men’s A Grade, Under 18 Boys’ A Grade, Under 13 Boys’ A Grade, Under 13 Boys’ B Grade, and Under 13 Girls A Grade. The following players won national individual singles titles, Teng Teng Liu (Open Men’s), Tianyi Li (Open Women’s), Gina Liu (Over 30 Women’s), Nathan Xu (Under 21 Men’s & Under 15 Boys’), David Guo (Under 13 Boys’), and Grace Qin (Under 13 Girls’). It is fantastic to see the development of our players, particularly the younger generation, who are performing and achieving results at both junior and senior level.

Auckland was successful in winning the Bill Hurrey Cup for 2017 (awarded to the association whose players experience the most success in the New Zealand Junior Open) which highlights once again the value and success of the Association’s High Performance programme. As always, the Association will review all coaching and development programmes at the end of the season with the goal of further enhancing the programmes so that our players can reap increased benefits.

A number of Auckland players achieved national representation in 2017. Those players included Zhiyang Cheng, David Guo, Nai Xin Jiang, Teng Teng Liu, Ruofei Rao, and Dean Shu. The Lim Brothers ATTA Elite Player scholarships are awarded to players who have made significant sacrifice in order to develop their game and to attend international table tennis events. The 2017 Lim Brothers ATTA Elite Player scholarships were awarded to Nathan Xu and Dean Shu.

The Association continues to search for training and playing opportunities abroad for both our junior and senior players. With preparation and planning it is hoped that in the next few years Auckland will be in a position to send teams to compete in some of the international competitions that have been identified.

As in previous years, 2017 has had some financial challenges for the Association with the addition of paid staff, costs associated with the various additions and alterations to the facility, and running of the various programmes and new initiatives undertaken by the Association. We are fortunate and grateful to have ongoing support from our family of loyal and committed sponsors whose contribution eases the financial burden on the Association. Special thanks to; Lim Brothers Import & Export Company Ltd., Penberthy Insurance, Anran International (NZ) Ltd., Ray White - Broadway, Ray White – St. Heliers & Kohimarama, and Commute Transportation Consultants.

In addition, we are very fortunate to have received grants from Blue Sky Community Trust, Dragon Community Trust, Four Winds Foundation, Infinity Foundation, New Zealand Racing Board, Lion Foundation, Pub Charity, and The Warehouse Newmarket during the 2017 season.

In my opinion, the highlight, and greatest success, of the 2017 season was hosting the table tennis event at World Masters Games 2017 – the culmination of four years of preparation. The Association spent considerable time and resource on organisation of the table tennis event, and preparing the Auckland table tennis stadium to be in readiness for the Games. World Masters Games 2017 saw more than 25,000 athletes compete across 28 sports. The event ran smoothly largely thanks to the experience and expertise of the tournament management team comprised of David Jackson, Alan Moore, Cathy Moore, Andrew Jackson, Paul Jackson, and Shane Warbrooke. The tournament management team was ably assisted by a dedicated team of volunteers. The atmosphere at the business end of the tournament was electric, crowd numbers were great, and feedback from WMG2017 Ltd. at the conclusion of the event was incredibly positive with particularly favourable comments about the venue, medal ceremonies, cafeteria, and general running of the tournament. Personally speaking I can say that it was a most enjoyable experience competing in the event and making new friends from around the world. A number of New Zealand athletes won medals in the various age categories offered. Refer to the World Masters Games 2017 website for more information.

As always, a big thank you to the members of the Association Executive Committee and Management Committee and, in particular, our CEO Shane Warbrooke for all of their hard work during another busy year. Wishing a merry Christmas to all our members, and the wider table tennis community, and all the very best for the 2018 season.

Wayne Gear Chairman 2016 / 2017 Auckland Interclub Competition

The Management Committee continued with the system of Interclub instituted in the 2012 / 2013 season where teams could opt to play with either two players or three players. Players in two player teams contested singles matches and one doubles match each. In three player teams the first player contested two singles matches, and two players each contested one singles match and one doubles match (the Olympic format). It remained possible for a two player team to compete against a three player team.

Interclub players arose from the greater Auckland region; Auckland, Counties-Manukau, Waitemata, and North Shore.

The 2016 / 2017 Auckland Summer Interclub competition attracted entries from 48 teams. This meant the introduction of an additional grade as compared with the 2015 / 2016 season.

The 2017 Auckland Winter Interclub competition attracted entries from 60 teams – the same number as was received in the 2016 season. However, several teams withdrew from the competition over the course of the first round. At the conclusion of Round One it was decided to condense the competition to 54 teams, thereby removing one grade for the remainder of the season. All Auckland representative players (junior and senior) continued to be required to compete in at least 50% of Auckland Winter Interclub team contests.

It was decided to contest both the 2016 / 2017 Auckland Summer Interclub competition and the 2017 Winter Interclub competition over two nights; Wednesday and Thursday. This enabled a 20 table set up on the Auckland table tennis stadium floor, with no team required to share a table or play in the Results Centre. Teams competing on a Wednesday shared the main playing hall with players taking part in Central Club.

Interclub grades contested were Super League (2017 Winter Interclub only), A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D1, D2, and D3 Grades. Grades were comprised of six teams. The D1, D2, and D3 Grades (Round One only) competed on a Wednesday night every week. All other grades competed on a Thursday night.

The Interclub competition continued to be run with a promotion / relegation system being employed between all grades. In 2016 / 2017 Auckland Summer Interclub teams contested two “grading” rounds before the third and final “Championship” round. In 2017 Auckland Winter Interclub teams contested three “grading” rounds before the fourth and final “Championship” round.

The Auckland Table Tennis Association awarded prizes for team and individual results. The Interclub Player of the Year awards were decided by determining the player who accumulated the most singles and doubles wins of any Interclub player across all grades during the 2016 / 2017 Summer Interclub competition, and then the 2017 Winter Interclub competition. Clark Sun was the winner of the Dick Rassie Memorial Trophy for Summer Interclub Player of the Year. Rajitha Samaraweera was the winner of the Bill Burns Memorial Trophy for Winter Interclub Player of the Year. 2016 / 2017 Summer Interclub match results - Round 1 26th October, 2016 - 24th November, 2016 A1 Grade 1 Young Dragon Kheng Yee Lai, Steven Zhu, PengQi Xu 2 Sparky Alan Phang, John Moon, Regan Qitian Zhang 3 Dr. Ngo Sarah Sandley, Hoa Ngo, Sharad Pandit 4 Foginson Kevin Fogarty, Doug Pattinson, Ben Jung 5 Noble Ox Jo Shaw, Burim Rakovica, Tutty Tanfana 6 Spin Art Hao Yu Gan, Jason Zhang, Pengqi Xu A2 Grade 7 The Legends Julian Wootton, Callum Rusbridge 8 The Boss Tony Innes, Chris Moon, Shane Warbrooke 9 Long Pips Ivan Tan, Stephen Lui 10 Ping An Xiaolan Xiao, Jack Jie Zheng, Shaoping Meng 11 Sunflowers Bei Zhang, Lisa Li, Wendy Shi, Mark Zhang 12 Rusted Ruskin Dantra, Nathan Phillips B1 Grade 13 SCUT Stanley Ho, William Liao, Jack Li 14 Pluto Tony Wong, Sam Yip, Michael Chang 15 Speed Eric Zu, Shuai Yang, GuoGang Zu 16 Hurricane A. Rajitha Samaraweera winner of the Bill Burns trophy for 2017 Winter Interclub Player of the Year 2017 Auckland Interschools table tennis competition

The number of teams that entered the Auckland Interschools table tennis competition increased dramatically during the 2017 season as compared with the 2016 season, specifically in the Term Two (Winter) and Term Three (Early Spring) competitions.

College Sport continued to collect and process entries for the Auckland Interschools table tennis competition. Entries were collected via the EnterNow system and then forwarded to the Auckland Table Tennis Association following the close of entries. At the Central Auckland venue (Auckland table tennis stadium) entries in the Term One (Pre-season) competition decreased to 21 teams (from 29 teams in the previous year). However, in Term Two (Winter) there was a large increase in entries to 175 teams (compared with 143 in the previous year), and in Term Three (Early Spring) there continued to be high entries with 163 teams entered (compared with 132 teams in the previous year).

Furthermore, teams had to be combined, moved to alternative timeslots, or turned away in Term Two and Term Three as the Friday 3.45p.m. – 6.00p.m. session at the Auckland table tennis stadium continued to be very popular.

A Thursday 3.45p.m. – 6.00p.m. session was run during the Term Two and Term Three competitions. Twenty teams competed on Thursday nights in both Term Two and Term Three. This number represents the greatest number of teams to compete on a Thursday night in the Auckland Interschools table tennis competition. The number of teams competing introduced some logistical issues as the Thursday 3.45p.m. – 6.00p.m. session overlapped with traditional coaching and development activity timeslots.

Additional tables were utilized in the main hall of the Auckland table tennis stadium in order to cater for demand on Friday nights during both the Term Two and Term Three competitions. Twenty-nine tables for both the Friday 3.45p.m. – 6.00p.m. and the Friday 6.00p.m. – 8.15p.m. sessions during Term Two and Term Three.

In order to cater for interest in East Auckland the Association continued to utilise the St. Kentigern College Sports Hall to run an Interschools table tennis competition on Fridays from 3.45p.m. – 5.45p.m. during Term Two and Term Three of the school year. The St. Kentigern College Sports Hall operated at capacity for the Term Two competition, with additional tables being added to cater for demand (total of 24 tables). Numbers competing at the St. Kentigern College Sports Hall decreased slightly for the Term Three competition with only 20 tables in use.

Funding was received from Dragon Community Trust for four table tennis tables to increase the capacity of the Auckland Interschools table tennis competition (St. Kentigern College Sports Hall).

The Kelvin Sweeney Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship displayed during the Winter Interschools table tennis competition was not presented during the 2017 season as no nominations were received.

Over the course of the 2017 season entries were received from 25 different schools from all over the Auckland region. This was an increase of three schools from the previous season.

Entry numbers were as follows: 2017 Pre-season Auckland Interschools competition (Term One): 21 teams (from 29 in 2016) 2017 Winter Auckland Interschools competition (Term Two): 175 teams (from 143 in 2016) 2017 Early Spring Auckland Interschools competition (Term Three): 163 teams (from 132 in 2016)

World Masters Games 2017 Table Tennis Event 22 nd – 29 th April 2017, Auckland

The Auckland Table Tennis Association began preparing to host the table tennis event at World Masters Games 2017 four years prior to the start of competition. The Association was confirmed as the sport partner and the venue partner for the table tennis event at the Games in the 2013 season. The venue itself was the Auckland table tennis stadium. This was a very unique position as the majority of sports had a separate sport partner and venue partner.

Numerous hours were spent on being in readiness come Games delivery time. Over the last half of the 2016 season and up until Games delivery time in April 2017 the reporting and meeting requirements intensified. The first athletes registered for the table tennis event in May 2016, with entries closing in February 2017. The table tennis event attracted 247 entries from 17 countries. The Association was excited to receive news that Sir Peter Snell would be competing in the table tennis event (in 2000 Sir Peter Snell was voted New Zealand Athlete of the Century). The addition of Sir Peter Snell to the entrant list led to increased media coverage and recognition of the table tennis event. Games-wide over 25,000 athletes entered representing in excess of 100 countries.

Sir Peter Snell competing in the table tennis event at World Masters Games 2017

The table tennis event offered team events, singles, and doubles across A Grade (Competitive) and B Grade (Recreational) divisions at the Games. The team competition was organised in a style (Corbillon Cup system) of 2 x singles,1 x doubles, and 2 x reverse singles. Team events were conducted for men and women. Each team could enter a minimum of two and a maximum of four players in their team. Individual events were conducted with the first stage of the singles event played as a three or four player round robin with the top two placed players from each group proceeding to the main draw. A second division (plate) draw was held for the remaining players. Doubles events were played on a knockout basis.

The team event was held over four days, and the individual events over three days. The team event was held on 22 nd – 24 th April, and 26 th April (25 th April was a rest day to enable athletes to participate in ANZAC Day commemorations). Individual events were held from 27 th – 29 th April.

The World Masters Games 2017 opening ceremony was held on the evening of Friday 21 st April, 2017 with the Closing Ceremony on Sunday 30 th April, 2017.

Auckland based athletes performed extremely well in the table tennis event with the following players winning medals in their respective age categories.

2017 Auckland Open 19 th – 20th August 2017, Auckland

The Auckland Open has become a major showpiece on the Auckland Table Tennis Association calendar. The Association continues to strive to build recognition and awareness of the Auckland Open with a strong focus on generating a large crowd to attend the Open Finals session. The Open Finals session was held on the evening of Saturday 19 th August, 2017. The major drawcard to attend the Open Finals session continued to be a $1,000 cash prize draw. Advertising was conducted via e- mail, the Association website, Facebook, printed flyers, and word of mouth.

The Open event sponsors were; Lim Brothers Import & Export Company Ltd., Penberthy Insurance, Anran International (NZ) Ltd., Ray White – Broadway, and Commute Transportation Consultants. Product sponsorship was received from Lone Star Restaurant, The Warehouse (Newmarket), and Coca-Cola. Product was distributed as spot prizes during the Open Finals session.

The Association was pleased to receive entries from 204 participants across all categories in the 2017 Auckland Open. It was fantastic to have a team of eight players from Fiji enter the Championships. The number of entries compared favourably to the 214 entries received in the 2016 season.

Chris Herlihy reprised his role as MC for the Open Finals session, having first taken on the role in 2016. Spectators were rewarded with spot prizes for answering trivia questions. Spot prizes were also randomly distributed throughout the crowd. Numbered spectator tickets were drawn out to determine the winners of the Lone Star Restaurant vouchers and the $1,000 cash prize draw.

The Open Finals session incorporated the Open Men’s doubles final, Open Women’s singles final, and Open Men’s singles final. This meant that only one match was in progress at a time and enabled a centre court atmosphere to be created around a single table. Free food items were distributed to spectators including Tip Top ice cream, confectionery donated by The Warehouse (Newmarket) and Jim Coad, and baked goods. Over 300 spectators received tickets for the spot prize draws during the Open Finals session.

Eberhard Kleiser encouraged players from the East Auckland Table Tennis Club to enter Auckland regional tournaments with great success, particularly adding to entries in graded events and the Junior Novice category. Several players from the East Auckland Table Tennis Club have entered teams in the 2017 / 2018 Summer Interclub table tennis competition.

Albert Cheng’s training group in the Howick College sports hall that ran on Thursday nights was discontinued during the 2017 season.

Eastern Table Tennis Club: The Eastern Table Tennis Club ran on Monday nights from March – November in the St. Thomas’ School Hall. Regular coaching was delivered to St. Thomas’ School pupils in the School Hall on Monday lunchtimes throughout the school year. Shane Warbrooke conducted the coaching sessions from February – June 2017. Eberhard Kleiser conducted the coaching sessions from July 2017 onwards. The Association funded the coaching sessions. Entry to the coaching was free to students, and students also received free entry into the Eastern Table Tennis Club. In return the Eastern Table Tennis Club receives free hall hire from St. Thomas’ School. There was an increase in the number of attendees at the Eastern Table Tennis Club during the 2017 season. One team from the Eastern Table Tennis Club regularly competed in the Auckland Interclub competition.

French Bay Table Tennis Club: Bryce Kay operated the French Bay Table Tennis Club out of the St. John Vianney Catholic Church Hall in Hillsborough. The Club ran on Tuesday nights. One team from the French Bay Table Tennis Club regularly competed in the Auckland Interclub competition.

Junior Clubs based at the Auckland table tennis stadium Junior Club : Operated on Monday evenings from 5.00p.m. – 6.30p.m. The Junior Club continued to be delivered by Eberhard Kleiser and Peimin Liu. It was decided to cancel Junior Club on public holidays and during School Holidays. On average 15-20 players attended Junior Club during the 2017 season

Day Club Under 19 Training: Operated on Saturday afternoons from 3.00p.m. – 5.00p.m. The New Zealand Chinese Table Tennis Association (NZCTTA) continued to oversee the Day Club Under 19 training group. The Day Club Under 19 Training continued to be delivered by Eberhard Kleiser and Peimin Liu, and proved popular with an average of 20-25 players attending each session

Girls’ Coaching : Operated on Thursday evenings from 5.00p.m. – 6.30p.m. The group was delivered by Jung Mi Kim, Eberhard Kleiser, and Tianyi Li. Kevin Wu assisted with delivery on occasion when the primary coaches were unavailable. On average 10-15 girls were in attendance at every session, which is a decrease in attendance from the 2016 season. Girls’ Coaching continued to be free for girls to attend in order to encourage greater female participation in table tennis. The Association was no longer able to promote through the Community Notice section of the Central Leader. The Community Notices were moved to the internet and there was less interest generated through this medium. Late in the season Gina Liu assisted with promotion of Girls’ Coaching through a series of Community Notices in Chinese newspapers. The Association continued to have limited success in encouraging girls to progress further in table tennis and join Auckland representative squad coaching groups and tournaments. However, the Association was able to field an Under 13 Girls’ team at the 2017 New Zealand Open Table Tennis Championships which won the event

Clubs based at the Auckland table tennis stadium Central Club : Continued to run on Wednesday evenings from 7.00p.m. – 10.00p.m., and operated on a ladder system. Kevin Wu ran the Central Club until June 2017. Eberhard Kleiser ran the Central Club from July 2017 onwards. Eberhard Kleiser changed the format to be played the best of one game to 11 points (as opposed to the long-standing best of one game to 21 points). In addition, Eberhard Kleiser changed from displaying matches on the electronic scoreboard to allowing players to self-manage their games through boards being placed at the end of each table which allowed players to move their name tags up or down a table based on their result. The change had positive results with an average of 30-35 players attending each session from July 2017 onwards. This was particularly pleasing given that the lower grades in the Interclub table tennis competition continued to compete on Wednesday nights which meant that the number of tables available for play in Central Club was often limited to nine, and players were not able to compete in both Interclub and Central Club at the same time

Day Club : Continued to operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9.30a.m. – 12.30p.m., and was administered by the New Zealand Chinese Table Tennis Association (NZCTTA). Numbers attending the Day Club remained stable compared with the previous financial year. The NZCTTA volunteer committee continues to be dedicated to promoting and developing table tennis in the Auckland region. The NZCTTA organized a team tournament and two individual tournaments (senior and junior) during the 2017 season. Day Club is an opportunity for players to meet and practice. This is particularly important for new players visiting the Association as they are guaranteed to have someone to practice with several times per week. This opportunity provides great value to potential stadium keyholder members, and as a result many regular Day Club attendees take the step of purchasing a stadium key.

Korean Club : Continued to operate on Saturday nights from 6.00p.m. – 10.00p.m. The club was run by the Korean Table Tennis Association of New Zealand however was open to all players. The Association continued to partner with the Korean Club to offer free coaching to attendees. Numbers that attended the Korean Club were comparable to the previous financial year

University of Auckland Table Tennis Club : Continued to operate on Sunday nights throughout the University year. Andrew (Zhenyuan) Huang continued in his role as the student coordinator for the 2017 season. Andrew obtained funding for the club through the Auckland University Student Association which assisted with covering the cost of table hire. Andrew will stand down from the role at the conclusion of the 2017 season and will be succeeded by Ryan Yang. The Club entered one team in the Auckland Interclub competitions

The number of players purchasing stadium keyholder memberships continued to increase. The 2016 / 2017 financial year is the first time that income from stadium keyholder memberships has exceeded $108,000. There continues to be a trade-off between revenue from stadium keyholder memberships and revenue from table hire and players attending club sessions as stadium keyholders receive free table hire and free entry into clubs run at the Auckland table tennis stadium.

There are several groups of stadium keyholders who continue to arrange their own practice independent of clubs. Groups of stadium keyholders can be found practicing together on most days of the week, but particularly Thursday morning, Friday morning, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday afternoon.

Development Officer The position of Northern Region Development Officer (Eberhard Kleiser) continued through until the end of June 2017. Eberhard Kleiser was tasked with delivering “Project Ping Pong” across the greater Auckland and Northland region; Auckland Table Tennis Association, Counties-Manukau Table Tennis Association, North Harbour Table Tennis Association, Table Tennis Northland, and Waitemata Table Tennis Association. Eberhard Kleiser continued to conduct his administrative duties from the Auckland table tennis stadium office. Development and promotional activities were conducted across the entire region.

Eberhard Kleiser continued to be contracted to North Harbour Table Tennis Association for the purposes of grant funding and accountability. Funding for Project Ping Pong during the 2016 / 2017 season was received towards Eberhard Kleiser’s salary from ASB Community Trust (now Foundation North), and Association contributions.

When funding for “Project Ping Pong” expired the Auckland Table Tennis Association took the important step of hiring Eberhard Kleiser full-time to work as Development Officer for the Association. Eberhard Kleiser conducts some contract work for other associations and organisations.

When working for the Association Eberhard Kleiser mainly targets primary schools in the Central and East Auckland region. Eberhard Kleiser establishes a teacher in charge of table tennis at each school, delivers table tennis sessions or roadshows, and promotes the continuation of table tennis in schools once he departs. Eberhard Kleiser promotes attendance at Association development activities where players can improve their basic skills. Once players begin to regularly participate in table tennis, and improve their basic skills, Eberhard Kleiser promotes progression to the Auckland Intermediate Squad where players develop further into representative players.

Eberhard Kleiser arranged coaching sessions at; Churchill Park School, Cornwall Park School, Epsom Normal Primary School, Freyberg Community School, Kohia Terrace School, Newmarket Primary School, Owairaka School, Point View School, Remuera Primary School, Royal Oak Primary School, Three Kings School, Victoria Avenue School, Wakaaranga Primary School, and Willowbank School during the 2017 season. Eberhard Kleiser assisted with delivery of lunchtime coaching at St. Thomas’ School (in conjunction with Shane Warbrooke) as part of the joint arrangement between the Association, Eastern Table Tennis Club, and St. Thomas’ School. Additionally, Eberhard Kleiser worked with Shane Warbrooke in delivering the Central Auckland schools development programme to students from Auckland Normal Intermediate and Remuera Intermediate.

Schools where coaching sessions were delivered were encouraged to enter the Primary School Table Tennis Tournament. The fourth annual Tournament was run in December 2016 with numbers increasing greatly from the previous year (from 99 entries in 2015 to 150 entries in 2016). The day is delivered by Eberhard Kleiser and Shane Warbrooke. It is expected that a similar number of entries will be received for the 2017 edition of the Tournament.

Eberhard Kleiser and Shane Warbrooke delivered the 2017 Central Zone Intermediate table tennis tournament at the Auckland table tennis stadium. This is the first time the Association has delivered the event that has traditionally been delivered by Wendy Allan (Pasadena Intermediate). Eberhard Kleiser delivered the 2017 South-Eastern Zone Intermediate table tennis tournament hosted by Somerville Intermediate.

In addition to working in schools Eberhard Kleiser delivers regular coaching activities for the Association including Girls’ Coaching, Junior Club, Day Club Under 19 Training, School Holiday Coaching, and school coaching (on a booking basis).

From July 2017 Eberhard Kleiser took on coordinating the Central Club and instituted a new system of play where attendees play one game to 11 points and self-manage their progression, or regression, up or down the tables. This system of play has proved popular. Eberhard Kleiser also took on coordinating the Auckland Interschools table tennis competition Friday night sessions run at the Auckland table tennis stadium. This enabled Shane Warbrooke to travel to East Auckland to coordinate the Auckland Interschools table tennis competition Friday night session run at the St. Kentigern College Sports Hall. Eberhard Kleiser also delivers corporate sessions when required.

Eberhard Kleiser continues to run the East Auckland Table Tennis Club, and an after school table tennis club at Somerville Intermediate. Eberhard Kleiser delivers a road show at Somerville Intermediate in February of each year in order to generate interest in the after school table tennis activity for the rest of the year. Up until July 2017 the East Auckland Table Tennis Club was run on a Wednesday night, and the after school table tennis club at Somerville Intermediate was run on a Friday night. Once Eberhard Kleiser was employed full-time by the Association the decision was made to shift both of those club activities to a Tuesday night to enable Eberhard Kleiser to run the Central Club and coordinate the Auckland Interschools table tennis competition Friday night sessions run at the Auckland table tennis stadium. The shift to Tuesday nights did not appear to impact attendance numbers at the East Auckland Table Tennis Club however numbers declined at the after school table tennis club at Somerville Intermediate following the change. The decline was mainly due to clashes with other sports.

The School Holiday Coaching Camps delivered by the Association continue to be popular. This is testament to the success of Eberhard Kleiser’s work in schools and the developing base of young players in the Association. Eberhard Kleiser delivered the School Holiday Coaching Camps in conjunction with Wei Zhong Jiang, Peimin Liu, and Patrick Low (October only). School Holiday Coaching is delivered over the course of one week (Monday – Friday) in the School Holidays. 2017 was the first season for quite some time where the Association was able to deliver in all four of the School Holidays; January, April (shortened camp due to World Masters Games 2017), July, and October. School Holiday Coaching Camps run from 9.00a.m. – 4.00p.m. each day with a lunch break from 12.00p.m. – 1.00p.m. and target beginner to intermediate level players who are looking to further develop their basic table tennis skills and knowledge. Students have the option of attending for a single day, multiple days, or the entire week. There is now a steady core of students who attend every School Holiday Coaching programme. Numbers attending the 2017 School Holiday Coaching programmes were as follows; January 2017 – 64 students (from 40 students in 2016) April 2017 – 64 students (from 59 students in 2016) July 2017 – 58 students (from 87 students in 2016) October 2017 – 63 students (not held in October 2016) The overall goal is for Eberhard Kleiser to grow the number of players regularly participating in Association activities, improve their basic skills, and keep those players enthused about table tennis.

Funding was received from Infinity Foundation for balls for development activities conducted by the Association.

Schools development programme The Auckland Table Tennis Association continued the Central Auckland schools development programme that was first initiated during the 2011 season to target intermediate schools in close proximity to the Auckland table tennis stadium. Shane Warbrooke delivered the majority of the coaching programme.

The targeted schools continued to be Auckland Normal Intermediate, Kowhai Intermediate, Mt. Roskill Intermediate, Pasadena Intermediate, Ponsonby Intermediate, and Remuera Intermediate. Demonstrations were conducted in each of the targeted intermediate schools and were followed by a minimum of 12 weeks of coaching delivered to students selected by their school. The development programme was delivered free of charge.

Eberhard Kleiser assisted Shane Warbrooke with delivery to Auckland Normal Intermediate and Remuera Intermediate students.

All of the targeted schools competed in the 2017 Central Zone Intermediate table tennis competition. It is intended to offer a Primary & Intermediate Interschools table tennis team competition for schools in Central Auckland in the future. This will be a project driven by Eberhard Kleiser with a projected start date of Term Two in the 2018 season.

School demonstrations were delivered in nine schools during the 2017 season. Demonstrations were conducted by Wei Zhong Jiang and Teng Teng Liu, with Shane Warbrooke providing commentary.

Patrick Low continued to deliver an after school club at Farm Cove Intermediate on Friday afternoons that was established in 2016 through KiwiSport kickstart funding. Patrick Low continued to assist the Association in delivering schools development and coaching programmes, particularly in East Auckland. Patrick Low delivered school coaching and development activities in Bucklands Beach Intermediate, Edgewater College, Farm Cove Intermediate, Howick College, St. Kentigern School, St. Kentigern College, and Willowbank Primary School.

Patrick Low continued to deliver the 2017 Auckland Primary & Intermediate Interschools Table Tennis Team Competition in the Pakuranga Community Hall. The competition was delivered in Term Two and Term Three of the 2017 season. Five schools took part over the course of the year with nine teams entering in Term Two, and eight teams entering in Term Three. The goal is to increase the size of the competition in future years.

Patrick Low ran an ATTA Intermediate East Auckland Development Squad in Term Four of the 2017 season. This squad catered for keen students who took part in the 2017 Primary & Intermediate Interschools Table Tennis Team Competition. Eighteen students enrolled in the Squad for a seven week coaching block.

Auckland representative squads The Association continued to deliver the squad coaching structure that was instituted for the 2016 season. The general structure continued to be as follows: a) Monday Junior Club, Day Club U19 Training, Girls’ Coaching, School Holiday Coaching - provide an introduction to table tennis and basic development of table tennis skills b) Auckland Intermediate Squad - development squad for identified players to be exposed to regular high performance training with a view to becoming established Auckland representative players c) Auckland Elite Squad - high performance training squad for established Auckland and New Zealand representative players

Wei Zhong Jiang continued in the role of Head Coach, and Tianyi Li continued in the role of Assistant Coach for the Auckland representative squads – Auckland Intermediate Squad and Auckland Elite Squad. In addition, Josh Alexandre, Gina Liu, Phillip Xiao, and Vicky (Fan) Yang assisted as training partners.

Auckland Intermediate Squad coaching continued to be delivered three times weekly: Mondays: 6.30p.m. – 8.30p.m. Tuesdays: 5.00p.m. – 7.00p.m. Sundays: 12.45p.m. – 2.45p.m.

Auckland Elite Squad coaching continued to be delivered two times weekly: Tuesdays: 7.00p.m. – 9.00p.m. Sundays: 3.00p.m. – 6.00p.m.

The Association continued to institute selection criteria for players to be eligible for selection in Auckland representative teams to compete at the 2017 New Zealand Open Table Tennis Championships. The selection criteria applied to the Open Men’s A Team, Open Womens’ A Team, and all junior teams. Selection criteria was as follows; • attend 50% of squad training • enter the Auckland Summer Open, ANZAC Day Open, Auckland Junior Open (for players under the age of 18 years), and Auckland Open unless there was a viable excuse • enter a team in Auckland Winter Interclub and compete in at least 50% of Interclub fixtures unless there was a viable excuse

The Association queried players as to who was available for selection, and then ran a qualification tournament for those available players in order to select Auckland teams for the 2017 New Zealand Open Table Tennis Championships.

Two qualification tournaments were held for Auckland Intermediate Squad players. The first qualification tournament (in April 2017) was used to determine one player to be promoted to the Auckland Elite Squad, and also three players to be promoted from the Auckland Intermediate Squad B Group into the A Group. The second qualification tournament (in September 2017) was used to determine one player to be promoted to the Auckland Elite Squad, and also one player to be promoted from the Auckland Intermediate Squad B Group into the A Group.

By the end of the 2017 season there were 20 paying players enrolled in the Auckland Intermediate Squad and 13 paying players enrolled in the Auckland Elite Squad. All players Over 18 years were exempt from paying squad coaching fees. The Association intends to continue with delivery of the same squad coaching structure for the 2017 season.

Drawn Doubles No Drawn Doubles evenings were held in December 2016 or April 2017.

Prize givings were held for the 2016 Winter Interclub competition and the 2016 / 2017 Summer Interclub competition, and the Association provided a supper.

Hosting Inclusive Table Tennis (HITT) programme The 2017 season was the 16th year that the Hosting Inclusive Table Tennis (HITT) programme was run by the Auckland Table Tennis Association. The HITT programme is a no-charge coaching / playing program for special needs players on Tuesday mornings throughout the school year. The HITT programme is supported by New Zealand Special Olympics, and continued to be recognised as a “supported sport” for the 2017 season. Table tennis was offered at the New Zealand Special Olympics National Games late in 2017.

The Ribbon Day was split in two with half of the schools attending the first Ribbon Day, and half the second. This eased the requirement for a large number of volunteers to attend in order to deliver the Ribbon Day thus making it more sustainable in the long-term. New Zealand Special Olympics representatives assisted as the MC for the Ribbon Days.

Warwick Kitchen continued as the convenor of the HITT programme for the beginning of the 2017 season. Eberhard Kleiser took on the role of convenor of the HITT programme when he was hired full-time by the Association in July 2017. Peimin Liu acted as Head Coach for the HITT programme. Ivy Ho and Bianca Yow assisted with HITT programme administration. A number of volunteers regularly contributed their time to assist the students at the coaching sessions on Tuesday mornings. Without the dedicated group of volunteers it would not be possible to deliver the programme.

Stadium Maintenance Nick Ning (general stadium maintenance), Jack Zheng (general stadium maintenance), and Virginia Waters (gardening and landscaping) continued to volunteer their time to the Association to ensure that the Auckland table tennis stadium is well maintained.

Terry Warbrooke and Linda Warbrooke spent considerable time making and repairing barriers and barrier covers in preparation for World Masters Games 2017.

DankoSec installed a five camera security system in the Auckland table tennis stadium in August 2017.

An extensive clean was conducted of the light shades and long cores right throughout the playing floor of the Auckland table tennis stadium (188 light shades) in October 2017. The inside stadium frontage was cleaned at the same time.

The Association received funding from the New Zealand Racing Board, Blue Sky Community Trust, and Dragon Community Trust as a contribution towards replacing eleven Butterfly Centrefold Rollaway table tennis tables on the Auckland table tennis stadium floor.

Site Development at 99 Gillies Avenue Dating back to the 2013 season, the Auckland Table Tennis Association and Auckland Badminton Association jointly received $30,000 in funding from Auckland Council for a Feasibility Study that aimed to achieve clarity on what additional benefits and synergies a shared redeveloped facility would offer, what that facility would look like, indicative costs, and whether redevelopment would be beneficial. The Feasibility Study was completed in early 2015. The Study stated that given both buildings’ age “in the medium term a significant refurbishment will likely be required if it is to remain in use. In simple terms doing nothing is not a solution.” The key strategy identified to meet the demand for table tennis and badminton in the community is to develop the Gillies Avenue site that will then serve as the central facility for a network of facility partnerships across Auckland.

The Feasibility Study identified that “in the long term a new development is the most cost effective solution to enable significant site intensification”. That is, the staged redevelopment of the existing Gillies Avenue site. Stage 1 of this option is creating a building with under croft parking to bridge the space between the Auckland table tennis stadium and Badminton Hall and create additional court space that would be shared by table tennis and badminton as demand necessitated.

To achieve Stage 1 of the joint project a 3 step process is required: a) Develop the internal structure of the facilities to cater for future redevelopment and to improve access (including disabled access and amenities) b) Roof replacement and re-cladding c) Bridging of both buildings

The Auckland Table Tennis Association and the Auckland Badminton Association undertook Stage 1 (a) in February – March 2017. Baker Brothers Construction Limited was contracted to conduct the work on the Auckland table tennis stadium, and the project received funding from: a) New Zealand Lotteries Commission b) Pub Charity Limited c) Blue Sky Community Trust

The Auckland Table Tennis Association also contributed funds from cash reserves.

The Auckland Table Tennis Association is indebted to the New Zealand Lotteries Commission, Pub Charity Limited, Blue Sky Community Trust as without their support the Facility Development project would not have been able to proceed.

The Facility Development work on the Auckland table tennis stadium was officially signed off and handed over on 6 th April, 2017.

The Auckland Table Tennis Association is now a participant in developing the Auckland Regional Indoor Court Facility Plan. The National Facilities Strategy for Indoor Sports 2013 identified there is a significant shortage of indoor courts in the Auckland Region and the shortage is expected to increase due to population growth, increasing diversity and demand for indoor sports. There is evidence to indicate a number of indoor sports are curtailed in their ability to meet current and future demand by the provision of indoor courts. Aktive, Auckland Council, and have identified that the timing is now critical for a coordinated and comprehensive regional facility plan for indoor courts based robust analysis and a unified voice by six indoor sport codes (Badminton, Basketball, Futsal, Netball, Table Tennis, and Volleyball).

The primary purpose of the Auckland Regional Indoor Court Facility Plan is to provide a regional picture on the spatial distribution of demand and supply of indoor courts, the model of provision and clear direction on the priorities for future indoor court provision, that will provide a basis for a unified voice on the priorities for future indoor court provision.

Administration Assistant Kevin Wu worked in an administration support role on Fridays until the end of June 2017. Over that time Kevin Wu assisted with preparations for delivery of World Masters Games 2017. Eberhard Kleiser took over the duties of the administration support role from July 2017 onwards. The primary task on Fridays was delivery of the Auckland Interschools table tennis competition. Kevin Wu continues to provide administration support for the Association on Saturdays. Bianca Yow continues to provide administration support for the Association on Sundays.

Lim Brothers Import & Export Company Ltd. provided sponsorship of $3,000 to the Association for the 2017 season. The funds were targeted towards the continuation of the Lim Brothers ATTA Elite Player Scholarships for the 2017 season. The 2017 season is the ninth year in which Lim Brothers ATTA Elite Player Scholarships have been awarded. The scholarships are supplemented with Association funds. The scholarships assist elite junior players with costs associated with attending international table tennis events. Scholarships are awarded to junior players who make significant sacrifice in order to develop their game, and who are deemed as promising prospects for the future of table tennis in Auckland, and New Zealand. In 2017 scholarships were awarded to Dean Shu, and Nathan Xu
