CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Greetings tennis community. This year has had a fair number of challenges as a business and as a tennis organisation and a good amount of success again too. HUTT VALLEY TENNIS

This year for Hutt Valley Tennis (HVT) is notable because of the time and energy that has gone into thinking about tennis facilities for the future. Also of note are the dedicated volunteers who create surroundings where players enjoy tennis, both in clubs and through to international events (for some of our players). It was Hutt Valley’s turn to host the Hexangular Senior Teams Event and witness top players from around the Central region playing at Mitchell Park. Congratulations to Wanganui for deserving to take home the trophy.

A six-person steering group was formed in November to develop a Tennis Hutt Valley report on facilities and operational models now and in the future. The group Matt Garnham (Coach), Alex Calder, Toby Massam, Phoenix Dingle, Claire Brownlie, William Brownlie, Jemima Jansen, George Stoupe (absent Jennifer Chuah and Lauren Beere). has been analysing national and international research including the 8 draft Tennis NZ National Facilities Survey, Dom Miller (with Zach Waanga) won the In the year ahead, you can expect ongoing which many of our clubs contributed to. doubles title in the Wellington ITF consultation from the steering group Engagement with the tennis community tournament by beating a highly rated about facilities and operational models. has been two fold. Coach education & development

The provision of quality coach education programmes and professional development opportunities for coaches has been a strong focus for Tennis Central. Along with Tennis New Zealand’s coach registration and certification policy, this has been a major focus to help achieve the goal of increasing and improving the quantity and quality of coaches throughout the region. There have been five Community Coach Courses held in 22 Taranaki, Wairarapa and Wellington over the past year, with a total of 57 participants. The Community Coach Course is the first step on Tennis NZ’s coaching ladder and provides some basic coaching skills, including the benefits of the new modified tennis programme. For the first time ever in Wellington, the /Tennis New Tennis Hot Shots Community Play Course – Wanganui Zealand Junior Development Coach course was held at the Renouf Tennis Centre in the winter of 2013, giving local coaches the opportunity to upgrade their professional development to a level 1 ITF-recognised course, also bringing updated techniques and knowledge to the coaches taking this course. There were 16 coaches from around the country (and even one coach who came over from Australia!). As part of TNZ coach registration, coaches must complete a first aid course, and TCR organised a first aid course. There were 37 TNZ registered coaches in the Central region last year, which is an increase from the previous year. More and more coaches and clubs are seeing the value of registration, which includes a minimum qualification of Assistant Junior Coach, current first aid certificate, NZ Police check and a signed TNZ Coach Code of Ethics. Many coaches and clubs are seeing the value of coach registration within the profession of tennis coaching.

A record number of top Tennis Central region 16s, 14s and 12s players gathered once again at the Wairarapa Tennis Association’s home courts in Masterton for the 2013 Regional Performance Centre Tournament. The weather was perfect for tennis with fine weather all weekend.

The spectators were treated to some great tennis in all age 27 groups with players vying for maximum points towards the Tennis Central Masters’ race and selection for the national age group teams’ event in April 2014. Charlie Van Boheemen and Lauren Beere Some of the highlights of the tournament were the semi-finals of the 14s boys with William Brownlie (6th seed) taking the top seed Joshua Snowdon-Poole to three sets and the semi-final of the 16s boys between 2nd seed Finn Reynolds and 3rd seed Alex Calder with Alex finally getting there in three sets – 4/6, 6/3, 6/2. The power that these young boys were generating was remarkable along with the fitness and selection of shots from the baseline and the net.

The top four players in each age group were invited to attend an RPC tennis camp on the weekend of 21–22 September with Central’s high-performance coaches Clint Packer and Joel Barr.

A special thanks to Mel Jansen from Tennis Central for all her Joshua Snowdon-Poole and Isaac Becroft tireless work in making the tournament run smoothly and to the referee Mayette Cope. Thanks also to Flo Perret at Tennis Central for all the initial preparations and to all the parents and coaches who travelled from the other Tennis Central regions to support their players throughout the weekend.

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORT To the Members of Tennis Central Region Incorporated

Report on the Financial Statements We have audited the financial statements of Tennis Central Region Incorporated (the “Society”) on pages 55 to 59, which comprise the statement of financial position as at 30 April 2014, the statement of financial performance and statement of movements in equity for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.

Board’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements The Board is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand; and for such internal control as the Board determine is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor’s Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing New Zealand. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. 54 An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in these financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the Society’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Society’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates, as well as evaluating the presentation of the financial statements.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

Other than in our capacity as auditor, we have no other relationship with, or interests in, the Society.

Opinion In our opinion, the financial statements on pages 1 to 5 present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Society as at 30 April 2014, and its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand.
