King Kabaka Mutesa of Buganda allowed the White Fathers to preach the Faith. But his successor, King Mwanga, in 1885, initiated a fierce persecution against the Christian converts. Charles Lwanga, the chief of the royal pages, and twenty one of his companions remained faithful even when they were burned alive. Fr. Charles Lwanga became the chief page after his predecessor was beheaded for confronting the king about the violence against Protestant missionaries. Charles chose to be baptized that same night. St. Charles stood steadfast in his faith and encouraged the other young men of Mwanga’s court to take root in the Catholic faith. His faith inspired others, even in the midst of the violence, in the face of death. For his unwillingness to submit and his efforts to safeguard the faith of his friends, Charles was burned to death on June 3, 1886, in Namugongo, Uganda. He was 26 years old. Christianity wasn’t always unwelcome in Uganda. The Missionaries of Africa – commonly known as the White Fathers – first introduced Catholicism to Uganda in 1879 under the reign of King Mutesa. ABSTRACT The physical, chemical and bacteriological quality of the lake water at Uganda Martyrs’ Catholic Shrine Namugongo was determined in an attempt to ascertain its suitability for human consumption. Pilgrims who visit the shrine come for prayers at various times of the year and drink this water directly from the water body. They attach healing remedies to it. From the parameters investigated it was determined that this water is unsuitable for human consumption judged against the set standards of Uganda National Bureau of standards and World Health Organization. Therefore, pilgrims and communities living nearby should be discouraged from drinking this water in its raw form. It is recommended that a factory be set up to purify this water and/or it is boiled before being drank by the locals and pilgrims. Key words: Martyrs’ shrine, contamination, water, pilgrims, lake. 1.0 Introduction Uganda Martyrs’ Catholic shrine Namugongo (UMCSN) is a place where Christians worship God in honor of the martyrs. Leo Tinkatumire (Mbarara Archdiocese-Uganda) Currently a Chicago Resident. Worldwide, the Catholic Church marks June 3rd as the feast of St. Charles Lwanga and Companions, the martyrs of Uganda, East Africa. St. Charles Lwanga is singled out because of his leading role as a catechist and animators of the martyrs. He even baptized some of them. In his introduction to African Holocaust: the Story of the Uganda Martyrs, Bishop Joseph Willigers explains, ―Saints are special gifts which God makes to the world. They are given to us not merely to be objects of our admiration to be safely locked away in a shrine or as a source of national pride. They are in the first place meant to inspire us and spur us on to be in our own times and to our own living signs of God’s saving power.‖ Charles Lwanga and his companions lived lives much like our own, but had to make a choice that most of us will never face. The Uganda Martyrs lived in the traditional kingdom of Buganda, in Uganda, East Africa. Their King (Kabaka), Mwanga II, gave them a choice: ―Denounce Christianity or die.‖ Charles and his companions chose ―to die rather than denounce their faith.‖ Between January 1885 and January 1887, Mwanga II had at least forty-five new Christian converts killed. The Church honors those who exhibit such courage, devotion, and selfless sacrifice for their faith as heroes, models of faith who intercede for the living before God.

Bernard Lorber & Jean-Michel Gleize Excerpted from the January 2007 issue of The Angelus In discussing the canonizations of Pope John Paul II, we are well aware that so doing we touch upon an extremely delicate matter which, by a natural desire for peace and concord, we would prefer not to have to address. If there is one area in which we could have willingly followed the Pope, it is in the fight against the current neo-protestant tendency to desacralize divine worship. Nevertheless, we have been compelled to take note over the years not only of the astonishing increase in the number of beatifications and canonizations that have taken place, a point to which we shall return later, but also of the choice of subjects, which has often resulted in the pairing of persons who were doctrinally opposed. The beatifications of Pope Pius IX and Pope John XXIII in 1999 is among the most flagrant examples of this. The canonizations within a few months of each other of Padre Pio and Jose Escrivá de Balaguer are also of a nature to trouble a mind that operates according to the principle of non- contradiction. In the present essay we make no pretense of deciding the matter, for we lack the competence to do so. Undoubtedly, one day the Magisterium will provide guiding lights different than those provided by Rome today, and then will issue clarifications about certain cases of dubious beatifications and canonizations.1 May the reader not be scandalized by this affirmation implying a relativity in the Church's Magisterium.

    N. 170603e Saturday 03.06.2017 Audience with participants in the Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies At 11.00 today, in the Clementine Hall of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the Holy Father Francis received in audience the participants in the Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies. The following is the Pope’s address to those present: Holy Father’s Address Dear Cardinal, Dear brothers and sisters, I welcome you with joy at the end of your General Assembly and I thank Cardinal Fernando Filoni for his words. With him I greet all the Superiors, the General Secretaries, the National Director and all of you present here. You well know my concern about the Pontifical Mission Societies, very often reduced to an organization that collects and distributes, on behalf of the Pope, economic aid for the neediest Churches. I know that you are seeking new ways, more suitable and more ecclesial methods to carry out your service to the universal mission of the Church. Let us allow ourselves to be sustained, in this process of urgent reform, also by the intercession of the Saints Charles Lwanga and companions, martyrs of Uganda, whose liturgical memory we celebrate today. To renew ardour and passion, the spiritual motor of the apostolic action of countless missionary saints and martyrs, I have very favourably received your proposal, formulated together with the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, to announce an extraordinary time for prayer and reflection on the missio ad gentes. I will ask all the Church to dedicate the month of October of the year 2019 to this aim, as in that year we will celebrate the centenary of the Apostolic Letter Maximum illud, of Pope Benedict XV.
