@MIZZOUHOOPS PAGE 7 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF MIZZOU BASKETBALL MORE THAN JUST A GAME Mizzou Hoops players and staff host basketball camps across Missouri and Illinois for community outreach s Cuonzo Martin walked into the Jackie Joyner-Kersee , in East St. Louis, Illinois, there was a sense that Mizzou A Hoops’ head coach had indeed arrived home. Martin and his men’s basketball staff spent three days traversing across the St. Louis, East St. Louis and Kansas City areas hosting free basketball clinics to teach the game they all love, but more importantly to teach life lessons along the way too.

“I think the biggest thing is to never give up,” Martin said. “What I always try to tell the kids is that it is always okay to change paths, but it is not okay to give up. Try to fight for your dreams.”

The camps came to fruition as a way to reach out to those kids and families who would not otherwise be able to make the two hour or longer trek to Columbia, Missouri from their homes on either side of the “Show Me” state, or bordering Illinois.

In addition to the staff, Mizzou Hoops players Torrence Watson (St. Louis, MO), Javon Pickett (Belleville, IL), Kevin Puryear (Kansas City, MO) and Jeremiah Tilmon (East St. Louis, IL) all showed up to their respective hometown camp locations to help instruct the kids and offer words of advice to the campers.

“Our staff has done a great job pouring into the community and into the kids,” Martin said.
