Port Tobacco's wins NASCAR Nationwide ROTY Honors

Port Tobacco’s Timmy Hill wrote his name in to the NASCAR history books on Saturday evening after becoming the youngest NASCAR Rookie of the Year ever. Hill beat out and Joe Gibbs development driver to win ROTY in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series with his 21st place finish in Miami.

Over the past 12 seasons, Rookie of the Year winners in the NASCAR Nationwide Series have gone on to have great success in NASCAR racing. Some of those drivers come from the roster of NASCAR champions and Daytona 500 champions. Since the turn of the century, , , , , , and Ricky Stenhouse Jr have all won rookie of the year in the Nationwide Series.

Earlier this year, TheBAYNET spoke to Hill about his past, his Southern Maryland roots and his aspirations. His main short-term goal was to win the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year honors. That mission was accomplished in November 19, 2011 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Hill adds this to his list of accomplishments along with winning a championship in the . Hill has also raced in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and the ARCA Racing Series.

Hill won the rookie honors at 18 years of age. Due to age restrictions, he was unable to compete in the season opener for the NASCAR Nationwide Series at the Daytona International Speedway. Hill was 17 at the time.
