Welcome to the September edition of the Parish Journal, we hope you all have had an enjoyable summer with the glorious long days of sunshine 

The 2nd annual Gala and Scarecrow Trail event was bigger and better than last year as promised by the organisers, and judging by the crowds who attended everyone enjoyed it, so next year it will be better still! This includes the Scarecrow Trail being extended to include as far as Ferry View and in the opposite direction, Ryehill and Bridge Bungalows – so watch this space!!!!!

A lot of work goes in to organising an event such as this, especially behind the scenes and thanks are due to all the people involved in this event – I don’t want to mention individual people for fear of missing anyone out, but a big WELL DONE is due to the committee, chaired by Denise Hardy, and everyone else involved.

A full list of winners for the Village Show and also the Scarecrow Trail are on the Parish Council website at: www.thorngumbaldparishcouncil.co.uk/gala-and-scarecrow-trail.aspx and you can also see a message from the winning scarecrow ‘Scare-Dee-Crow’ for all those who wrote to him.

There was also a very successful Garden Party in Ryehill on 27 July at the home of Charlie and Judy Smales, which raised £1300 for the ‘Friends of Ryehill Village Hall’ and which was opened by Keith Tindall, ex Hull FC and International rugby player. Keith kindly donated two tickets to a home match at the KC Stadium, photos and information about this and all future events can also be seen on the Parish Council’s website at: www.thorngumbaldparishcouncil.co.uk/friends-of-ryehill-village-hall.aspx

The ‘Friends of Ryehill Village Hall are organising many events to get the hall back into use and a team of volunteers have recently redecorated the inside of the hall – a big thanks goes to all who cleaned and painted the hall. Events include a fortnightly ‘Craft Group’ and monthly ‘Farmyard Bingo’ as well as a big ‘Auction’ on 1 November by Tim Fussey and entertainment by the Stoney Creek Boys, so watch out for posters advertising this.

Due to ill health, Cllr Ian Jackson has not been as actively involved in the Parish Meetings – Members would like to send him their very best wishes and look forward to seeing him back at the meetings soon 

Many of you will have noticed a change as you drive into the village from ; East Riding of Council has planted large areas of wild flowers at a cost of £2,000. We are told that these will take time to mature and are assured that next year they will be a spectacular sight.

On a more serious note, the Parish Council is revising its Emergency Plan in readiness for winter. This is about how our parish would be affected when something out of the ordinary happens that disrupts everyday life, and putting effective measures in place so that people in our community can get back to normal as quickly as possible. No one can predict when something like this can happen but our Emergency Plan means that we can be prepared. We have an emergency team ready to deal with emergencies and we also have a lot of information on our website available for download. More details will be included in our December issue of the Parish Journal.

All that remains is for me to hope that the summer lasts as long as possible for everyone.

Therefore, some schemes, including this one, have been delayed but the Thorngumbald Crossing is now on a schedule to get done ‘in the summer’ – not too clear when, as much depends on other factors. However, what will happen is the parents of children who will effectively be closer to the school by virtue of them not having to walk back to the village centre, to cross the road, will be notified of the impending change in their bus-pass situation quite soon, but the change will probably not take place until after the Christmas school holiday.  Clerk has contacted ERNLLCA regarding Maintenance and has received a reply – to be discussed at the end of the meeting without ‘Press and/or Public present’  Clerk can confirm that £1,230.26 from the Playing Field Account has been transferred via BACS into the Parish Council Account.  A letter was sent to the residents of Elm Tree Bungalow asking them to replace the boundary fence, as yet no reply has been received however they did discuss this briefly with Cllr Hardy, who suggested they take the matter to the Council meeting,  Clerk told members that the cost of litter bins for the parish are £268.91 – it was RESOLVED to purchase 2 – these will be placed at Larch Drive and Ryehill.  Clerk received a 2nd quote for the electrical work at a cost of £588.00 it was RESOLVED to accept this quote.

Thorngumbald Crime Figures June 2013

18/06/13 An assault was reported in Ferry View between two work Colleagues, one male was arrested and subsequently charged to Attend Hull magistrates Court.

12/06/13 Damage was reported to a vehicle which had been parked on The car park of the Royal Mail public house.

Anti Social Behaviour

There was one report of anti social behaviour which was a dispute between two parties over money owed.

Although we live in a very safe and low crime area, we are subject to offences such as burglaries or theft from vehicles. 50% of all burglaries reported in the East Riding are through insecure doors or windows. As the warmer weather is now with us the temptation is to leave doors and windows open which only helps the opportunist thief. Likewise over 50 % of cars broken into are insecure or have items of value on show. The crime prevention message is clear - lock it or lose it! Sometimes we get complacent about security, but thieves are opportunists, and will travel into the East Riding, often from Hull looking for easy pickings.

SILVER SALVER WINNER - 2013

Congratulations to Dot Bentley for receiving the Silver

Salver this year. It was a well-kept secret, and a privilege to surprise Dot at the Race Night fund-raiser held at the Royal Mail. Dot was nominated for her continued dedication to the village for running the majorette troop for many years (over 20), and continued support to Thorngumbald Pre-School. Dot ran the majorettes, alongside Betty Williams who is sadly no longer with us - Betty was a very good friend of Dot's and a popular lady within the village. Although the majorettes no longer operates in Thorngumbald her dedication over the years has never faltered, and after the majorettes in Thorngumbald closed, Dot was approached to help run another troop within the area which is also very successful.

BURSARY AWARD

Sharon Weightman received a bursary award from P&G Champion Mums Foundation. The foundation was set up in 2011 to help mums make small but meaningful changes in their lives and the lives of their families or local communities. Sharon’s bursary was to help pay for pitch fees for ‘Thorngumbald Boys Football Club’ Well done Sharon 

THORNGUMBALD PRESCHOOL

I hope that you are all enjoying the summer break and for once we are having some decent weather (not just for Scarecrow/Gala weekend!)

I am sure that you will all agree that yet again the Scarecrows were magnificent and my heartfelt thanks go out to all who helped in any way to make the weekend such a memorable and profitable one. Preschool benefitted by the sum of £600! A total of nearly £1700 shared between Preschool, St Mary’s Church and Gala Funds. (see separate article about the Scarecrow/Gala)

What a wonderful last term we had at Preschool. Not only was the weather great which gave the children the opportunity to get outside and have lots of fun in our garden area, but we had a lovely trip to , where the children had fun on the beach and came back happy but tired(parents too)! The end of term brought lots of “goodbyes” and quite a few tears shed…some really special children left us to join Primary School and we wish them every success. They will all be missed. A massive thank you from the staff and myself for the lovely gifts and cards. THANKYOU!!!!!

Which brings me on to next term, where we welcome around 45 children and their families to Preschool. The theme for next half term will be MYSELF, so the children exploring all different ways to draw, paint, and model, themselves using lots of unusual media.

We are returning to Preschool on MONDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER, which is slightly later than Primary school.

If you have, or know of a child aged 2 to 5 years, please do no hesitate to come up to the Village Hall during Term Time. Our hours of opening are Monday to Friday 9 until 12, with additional Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons until 3. The children bring a packed lunch on Tues and Weds. Your child can come for as little or as much as you would like and at present our fees are £2.50 per hour. Children aged from 3 years can access Government funding which entitles them to 15 hours free, which can be topped up if you wish. Some funding is available for 2 years in exceptional circumstances. For more information please get in touch either by phone on 07745081096, by email at [email protected] or visit our website www.Thornps.co.uk Denise Hardy, Manager

Hello from Thorngumbald Primary School!

I am writing this in the last week of term with hectic preparations for the end of the academic year keeping everyone in school very busy. We are all looking forward to the 6 weeks of the summer holiday stretching ahead of us in the hope that the current summery weather continues!

We enjoyed taking part in the Village Scarecrow Trail at the start of July. Our school themed scarecrows were much admired by passers-by who bought drinks, sweets, flapjack, played games and had their faces painted, with the proceeds going to The Friends of School fundraising and the Year 6 Enterprise Fund – more of which below. All the children in school took part in the handwriting competition for the Village Show with rosettes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each year group.

The Friends of School organised a very successful Fete towards the end of May. Despite the cool weather there was good attendance, with families enjoying the range of stalls and games set up on the playground and in the hall. The Friends play an important part in the life of the school community by organising social events such as this. At the same time their fundraising means that we are able to purchase extra resources for the children at school.

There have been several visits out of school since our last newsletter. The children in Years 3 and 4 visited Hall as part of their study into the Tudors. Our youngest children enjoyed a sunny day out at Beach, followed by a visit to Mr Moo’s Ice Cream Parlour. In early July, the Y6 children went on a residential visit to Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales, staying overnight at the youth hostel and visiting local attractions over the 2 days. They wanted to keep costs down for their parents, so set up an Enterprise Fund, raising money to subsidise the visit through a range of activities, including preparing a staff lunch, selling flapjack, organising small games at the school fete, making and selling craft scarecrows and ‘growing’ £2 over the half-term. Altogether they have raised over £900, exceeding the original target and allowing them to purchase customised Year 6 Leavers hooded jackets as a memento for each pupil. This fantastic achievement rounds off a successful final year at primary school for the class.

This last week has seen our annual open afternoon, giving parents and carers the opportunity to celebrate their child’s achievements over the year. Our Year 3 and 4 teachers organised a Tudor feast and entertainment, with dancing in the hall, food-tasting, croquet and tennis outside – all complemented perfectly by the sunny weather. Parents and carers have also been treated to an afternoon and evening performance of ‘Olivia’ by the children in Years 5 and 6, an alternative version of the Dickens tale featuring some well known Victorian characters which showcased considerable talents in singing and acting to a very appreciative audience at each performance.

Please do visit our website www.thorngumbaldprimaryschool.co.uk to find out more about our school and to see our regular updates on what’s been happening.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all, on behalf of the children and staff at the school, a very pleasant summer and we’ll see you again in September!

Julie Ellis Headteacher

Hello from a tired but happy Thorngumbald, Ryehill and Camerton Gala and Scarecrow Trail committee Can we start by saying a huge great big THANK YOU! to everyone who supported us in any way at all.

With your support, we raised an amazing £1,663.23, as well as bringing the whole community together for a fantastic day of family fun.

Once again we were blessed with lovely weather and the sun shone as people set up their scarecrows and brought their exhibits to the village hall for the show.

There were 75 scarecrows this year, and all of them were brilliant. People had obviously put a lot of thought into what to do and had worked really hard getting them ready for the big weekend. The winner “Scaredee Crow” was very clever and a well deserved winner, chosen by our independent judges, The Reverend Ian Blythe and his wife. We were very grateful to them for the time they took to go around the village and judge what we thought was a very difficult competition.

At 12noon the royal party had gathered at the village hall and Counsellor Jean West crowned King Max, Queen Jodie-Lee and Princess Phoebe-Mae. Along with the royal attendants, Adelaide, Faith and Bethany, the procession set off around the village with the royal carriage looking splendid and the majorettes providing a wonderful display accompanied by catchy music. Last minute road closure issues meant a change to the route at short notice, so apologies to anyone who didn’t see the parade because of this.

By the time the procession returned to the village hall the helpers looked a little warm but agreed it had been well worth it as people had come out and waved as they passed as well as dropping coins into the collection tins they were carrying.

The Village Show opened it’s doors at 1pm, allowing everyone to come in and marvel at the range of exhibits. There were lots of Ooooos and Aaaaahs as people saw what prizes they had won. There was an outstanding display of exhibits, especially considering the unseasonable weather we had been experiencing.

Outside the burger van was doing a roaring trade and so was the ice cream van.

The Community Institute was also a hive of activity with people enjoying the refreshments provided. Some committee members are still buttering bread in their sleep! By 5pm the Royal Mail car park was packed with families ready to enjoy the FREE magic show. The great Mazani saw that they were not disappointed and gave a brilliant performance, entertaining children and adults alike. The bar and the hog roast had queues all evening long, with the hog roast owner having to send out for more meat!!!

Denise took to the microphone and announced the winners of the trophies from the village show and of course, the winning scarecrow. Chair of the Parish Council, Margaret Wilson, handed out the Allotment Association awards.

At 7.30pm the band struck up, taking us into the night with their fabulous set. Some of you may even have seen Elvis in the crowd teaching the children how it should be done!

We imagine there were some very tired children (and adults) falling into bed after a super day, we know we slept soundly that night!

Sunday morning found St Marys packed to the gills as the royal party and many villagers enjoyed the scarecrow service. We joined in with the children’s wonderful singing and gave thanks for the lovely weekend we were having. Many people then headed over the the Community Institute for refreshments before taking a leisurely walk home, spotting yet more scarecrows on the way.

Many people were still walking round the village at tea time on Sunday, looking at the scarecrows and enjoying the nice weather. This included many committee members who had been too busy on the Saturday to take a stroll.

By the time you read this issue of the Journal, the money raised will have been divided three ways, £600 to St Marys Church, £600 to Thorngumbald Pre-School and the remainder staying in the “Gala and Scarecrow Fund”. If you are part of a voluntary organisation within the parish and would like to bid for a donation from the Gala and Scarecrow Fund then get pen to paper and send us your bid. The committee will continue to meet on a monthly basis and will discuss any bids received as such meetings. Please send your bids to 28 Damson Road, Thorngumbald or e-mail to [email protected]

Finally, all that remains is a plea for help. If you, or anyone you know, would like to be involved in next years event, whether as a full committee member or simply “putting something on” on the day, we would love to hear from you. Our meetings are advertised on the Parish Council website www.thorngumbaldparishcouncil.co.uk and you will be made very welcome indeed. News from St Mary’s

First of all a big thank you to all those who took part in the Gala and Scarecrow Festival in July. St Mary’s is of course very grateful for its share of the proceeds, but is also pleased that it proved to be such a wonderful community event. It was great to see the village out in force talking to each other and getting to know their neighbours. The church was packed for the Scarecrow service on the Sunday. The organising group are looking to make next year’s even better!

Keeping an old building like St Mary’s in good order is hard going. Last year we had problems with the organ , this year we need to have the building rewired. We rely on fund raising activity to keep our church open. The South Holderness Deanery Choir came along in August to sing rarely performed hymns from previous centuries including, for example, Marching to Zion, the Church in the Wildwood and Beluah Land as well as more familiar congregational hymns. The evening raised around £180 towards the church's rewiring fund. Another success was the St Mary’s Garden party held at the Vicarage on the 10th August. The rain stayed away and folk lingered over tea and cake and had a go at the usual stalls and games. We are very grateful for the many people who supported the event by their presence , but also those who donated prizes and made cakes and gifts to sell. The afternoon made £500. We do appreciate all those people who support the church by their kind giving.

Following the success of Messy Church in March, St Mary’s, along with the Methodists, are holding another event in October. Messy Church is for those families who want to find out more about the faith in an informal way. It takes the form of an all age gathering NOT in the church, where, in fun and family friendly ways, we explore a theme through craft activities, a story and some singing and ends with a shared meal. There can be a lot of glue about so it can get messy. We are holding a harvest Messy Church evening on Friday 18th October between 4 p.m. and6 p.m. in the Community Institute. There will be activities based around the theme of harvest with lots of fun things to do for all ages.

We have had lots of babies baptised at St Mary’s over the last year There appears to be a bit of a baby boom! We are holding a Cafe Church morning on Saturday 19th October in the Institute for parents of the newly baptised between 10.am and 12noon. New parents can relax over a coffee, cake and a newspaper while the children snooze or enjoy the play area.

Interested in either of these events contact the Vicar Susan Walker on 601381 or the churchwardens Ken and Muriel Wilson on 622352

Harvest

Despite being surrounded as we are by fields, it is on often easy to take harvest for granted. We are dependent on our food for the harvest here and abroad. A bad harvest can mean ruin for farmers here, and in other countries it could spell starvation. We shall be giving thanks for the harvest at our Messy church event on the 18th October ( see above) but also at a United Harvest Service at St Mary’s on the 20th October at 10a.m.. Do come and join us for one, or both, of these events.

All inquiries for baptism , weddings etc to the Vicar, Susan Walker, The Vicarage, Main Street, Thorngumbald, HU12 9NA Tel.01964 601381 E-mail [email protected]

The Community Institute

Excellent Venue Available For Your Event

The Community Institute is a great asset for our village. It is well appointed, well maintained and is located centrally in the village. There are times when the hall is available for hire, either for a one off event, or for clubs, societies, etc on a regular basis.

The hall makes an excellent venue for such things as family and children’s parties with its excellent kitchen facilities and other amenities including a disabled toilet. It is available for hire, at the moment, on Thursday and Friday evenings and at the weekends, although it is very occasionally used by St Mary’s and the Methodist Churches on Sundays.

To hire the hall please contact Lynne or Shaun, telephone number 01964 601243. For clubs and activities the hire charge is £15 for a three hour let (for residents of the village) and £15 per hour for outside organisations. For children’s parties the cost is £22.50 (for a three hour long party) for children under twelve, and £15 per hour for family parties (thirteen and over). Extra time is allowed for setting up and clearing away afterwards.

One of the activities taking place at the moment is indoor bowling. The Bowling Club would welcome new members (no previous experience necessary). If you would be interested in having a go, please contact Arnold Craven on 01964 623520.

We are very fortunate in Thorngumbald, Camerton and Ryehill to have such good facilities as the Community Institute, the Thorngumbald Village Hall and Ryehill Village Hall available to us. Like all such things, however, it is a case of using them or losing them. People over many years and generations have worked hard to provide these facilities. Now it is our turn to maintain and improve them. Vintage Garden Party at Ryehill

Amongst the fund-raising events organised by the Friends of Ryehill Village Hall one of the most successful was the recent Garden Party on 27 July at Goodwin Lodge, Ryehill, the home of Charlie and Judy Smales. Their beautiful garden was the backdrop for a wonderful community event and well attended by local residents, and the sun shone, too.

The event was opened by Keith Tindall, ex Hull FC and international rugby player, who generously donated two tickets to the Hull FC v Widnes game at the KC Stadium. To get the best possible price for the tickets Richard Marriott decided to auction them amongst rugby aficionados and raised the princely sum of £250.

The many stalls included a craft marquee, a raffle, a ‘naffle’ stall (where everyone gets a prize), cold drinks, home made cake stall, book stall, home grown plant stall. Two of the most popular were the stalls where you could buy a strawberry and receive a glass prosecco, and where you could be served with hot drinks, and have a gigantic piece of home made cake, or quiche all served on vintage china table ware and enjoy them seated in the lovely garden. There was Play your Cards Right, skittles, Hoop la and balls in a bucket etc for the younger folk to join in.

At the close of the garden party Keith Tindall drew out the winning raffle numbers and Richard Marriott auctioned a beautiful jigsaw quilt which had been kindly donated from the craft marquee. A grand total of £1300 was raised towards the restoration of Ryehill Village Hall and our grateful thanks go to Charlie and Judy for raising this fantastic amount.

It was such a success we hope Judy and Charlie can be persuaded to do it all over again next year.

Grandma’s Bun Day

On Sunday, July 7th Callum Hockey (13) and his friend, Zac Davison (8), with a little help from Harlie Caley (4), held a Bun Day at Callum’s grandma’s house in Ryehill, to raise funds for the restoration of Ryehill Village Hall and Lifestylers.

The total amount raised and shared between the two was £112.80p. Many thanks to all who donated buns, flowers, etc., and also everyone who came and supported us.

From Callum, Zac and Harlie. AND THORNGUMBALD FIRST RESPONDERS

If you live in or any of the South Holderness villages up to and around Thorngumbald, and have ever had a medical emergency when you have had to call an ambulance, chances are the first person on the scene was a Community First Responder.

Rigorously trained by the Ambulance Service, these individuals are people from our own community who are able to respond to calls faster, because they are local, and either give first aid where appropriate, or support and comfort to the patient and the family. It is a fact that lives have been saved by the first aid, including de-fibrulation and resuscitation, given by these Responders.

The Responders are completely voluntary. On duty throughout the night, often with work the next morning, and not even expenses paid, but very, very happy to support their communities.

Unfortunately, they also have to buy their own Responder Bags, containing oxygen, defibrulators, etc, which cost in excess of £1000. And these bags have a shelf-life.

The Keyingham Community Responders, who serve up to Withernsea and back to Thorngumbald, including all the villages round about, are currently fund- raising to replace one of their bags which will soon be out of date. Three of them cycled from Blackpool to Withernsea, in 17 HOURS on Saturday 24thAugust (180 miles) in order to raise money by sponsorship. They were very ably supported and guided by 3 others. They plan to split the money raised equally between the Responders and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Duncan, Danny, Chris, Mike, Terry and Les would like, through your newsletter, to pass on very many thanks to all the kind people of Thorngumbald who so generously sponsored them. And thanks also to those who came out to cheer them on their way!
