New York Painting Begins: Eighteenth-Century Portraits at the New-York Historical Society The New-York Historical Society holds one of the nation’s premiere collections of eighteenth-century American portraits. During this formative century a small group of native-born painters and European émigrés created images that represent a broad swath of elite colonial New York society -- landowners and tradesmen, and later Revolutionaries and Loyalists -- while reflecting the area’s Dutch roots and its strong ties with England. In the past these paintings were valued for their insights into the lives of the sitters, and they include distinguished New Yorkers who played leading roles in its history. However, the focus here is placed on the paintings themselves and their own histories as domestic objects, often passed through generations of family members. They are encoded with social signals, conveyed through dress, pose, and background devices. Eighteenth-century viewers would have easily understood their meanings, but they are often unfamiliar to twenty-first century eyes. These works raise many questions, and given the sparse documentation from the period, not all of them can be definitively answered: why were these paintings made, and who were the artists who made them? How did they learn their craft? How were the paintings displayed? How has their appearance changed over time, and why? And how did they make their way to the Historical Society? The state of knowledge about these paintings has evolved over time, and continues to do so as new discoveries are made. This exhibition does not provide final answers, but presents what is currently known, and invites the viewer to share the sense of mystery and discovery that accompanies the study of these fascinating works. -

ON THE MARCH TO BRANDYWINE - Howe heads for Philadelphia. Washington blocks the path. On the way to their first engagement of 1777, Washington exposes himself to capture, Howe misses an opportunity, the rains fall, and everyone seems prepared for what happens next. THE BATTLE OF BRANDYWINE- The first battle in the campaign. Howe conceives and executes a daring 17 mile march catching Washington by surprise. The Continental Army is impressive, but the day belongs to the British. THE BATTLE OF THE CLOUDS Both armies were poised for another major engagement Five days after the Battle of Brandywine, a confrontation is rained out PAOLI MASSACRE Bloody bayonets in a midnight raid Mad” Anthony Wayne, assigned to attack the rear guard of the British army, is himself surprised in a “dirty” early morning raid. MARCH TO GERMANTOWN Washington prepares to win back the capital Congress flees Philadelphia as the British occupy the city amid chaos and fear. THE BATTLE OF GERMANTOWN The battle is fought in and around a mansion. For the first time the British retreat during battle, but fog and confusion turned the American advance around. -

Page 1 The Philadelphia Museum Company records (AO.002) Historical note Peale’s Museum founded by Charles Willson Peale in 1786, displayed natural history specimens and examples of portraiture. After his death in 1827 it was run by his son, Rubens. It closed in the 1850s. Scope and Contents note This collection consists of a bound volume of correspondence kept by Rubens Peale, manager of Peale's Museum, 1821, and two oversize clippings advertising events at Peale’s Museum, 1785 and 1804. The pages containing the Rubens Peale correspondence were apparently once part of the manuscript of the charter and by-laws of the Columbianum (q.v., as can be seen on the microfilm), and have now separated. Most of this collection has been microfilmed by the Archives of American Art. See the reel numbers listed below. Copies of the Charter and By-laws of the Philadelphia Museum Company (Peale's Museum), of 1828 and 1834, are found in the Lambdin pamphlet collection, volume 1. -

On Death and Burial in Isfahan Richard Nelson Frye (Freij) Emeritus Professor of Iranian at Harvard University October 12, 2010 It all began when I was director of the Asia Institute of Pahlavi University; then and now it is Shiraz University. The Asia Institute had been founded in New York by Arthur Upham Pope, a Persian art entrepreneur, before the second World War, but had folded afterwards. The Shah, however, in 1966 agreed to send Pope and his Institute to Shiraz in Iran. Now anyone who has worked in Iran, knows that nothing can be done in the provinces, since everything is centered in Tehran. In my five years in Shiraz new ideas were at once usurped by the capital, and bureaucracy there, to say the least, is most complex. Iranians say, that if someone says yes, it means maybe, and maybe means no, for no one likes to say no, to any proposal. After my tenure as the director of the Institute, on returning to Shiraz in 1975, to the local people it appeared scandalous for one who had been head of a center, and now was willing to serve as an ordinary professor. Yet my faith in the seemingly schizophrenic land, with opposite extremes, did not waver. Their rich culture was too strong. Although born of Swedish parents in 1920, I did not have strong roots in various homes of America. Since I felt I had more connection with that part of the world, burial in Iran seemed appropriate. At first an archaeological site, called Qasr-e Abu Nasr near Shiraz, seemed a plausible burial site, but authorities vetoed that selection. -

Given Design origins that Armenians have lived there for millennia and are its only inhabitants attested in both ancient Dragon carpets and medieval sources as having been weavers and dyers, it is surely curious they would have Caucasus abandoned a craft for which they were renowned. Many regional rugs were originally attributed to Armenians Armenian weavers, but from the second quarter of the 20th century onwards were reclassified as Historiography being either of Turkish (Azeri) or Persian origin. This article reconsiders the available evidence and the way it has been interpreted to arrive at a balanced assessment of Armenians’ contribution to the production of Dragon carpets, the region’s earliest surviving design. Its findings challenge many of the assumptions upon which these conclusions were based, and thus revives the possibility the attributions of earlier authors were more accurate than those of their successors. Frye Harvard University Persians are often remembered for their poetry, rugs and beautiful handicrafts. But this is only part of the story as regards their traditional crafts, for in the past many engineering feats were attributed to them, for example the vaulted arch on a dome, the wind catching apparatus called badgir, windmills, the kahreez or qanat system, as well as other inventions. This pre-supposes a knowledge of science and technology which enabled these inventions. Consequently the notion that the ancient Persians did not take an interest in scientific innovations is obviously unfounded and a re-appraisal of the contributions of this people to world history should be undertaken. Iran was not an area where only the humanities were developed, but for the sustenance of settlements much depended on their scientific outlook.
