ABSTRACT Marriage is a very solemn binding for the bride and the groom. In India it is a very sacred occasion for the Hindus. The parents and the aged relatives of the boy and the girl to be married take great care before getting them engaged in wedlock as there is no turning back from the marriage vow. The purpose of match making is to ensure a long and happy married life, the ancient Indian sages and saints devised a method to check the matrimonial adaptability or marriageable compatibility which is called 'Mar- riage Matching' or 'Match-making'. The major 10 kuta or match or porutthams are Dinam, ganam, maahendram, streedeegam, yoni, Raasi , Rasyaadhipathi, Vashyam, Rajju and Vedha. Introduction.     1. Tithi (Lunar date) Tithi is the lunar date. There are thirty tithis in a lunar month. A Tithi is also a measure of separation of the Moon and Sun from each other. Each Tithi has its own independent planetary lord. Persons born under different Tithis have different characteristics. For example, a person born on full moon day (poornima) will have stronger characteristics of the moon than a person born on new moon day (amavasya). The Tithis are divided into five groups: 1. Nanda (Ananda or Joyous) tithis - Prathipada (1st), Shasti (6th) and Ekadashi (11th) bestows happiness and joy 2. Bhadra (Arogya or Mangala or Healthy) tithis - Dwitiya (2nd), Saptami (7th) and Dwadashi (12th) good for stating new work 3. Cornelius Agrippa- Alchemist/Magician (1500 CE) Historical Origins of the Lunar Mansions Before the ecliptic was divided into the twelve zodiac signs, the ancient Indian astronomers recognized 27 divisions called nakshatras . The primary usage of the nakshatras is a fundamental difference between Western and Vedic astrology. One must deeply encounter and explore the nakshatras to appreciate the diversity and richness of Vedic astrology. The Moon takes about 27.3 days to complete its sojourn around the ecliptic. The nakshatras represent the average daily movement of the Moon against the fixed stars. Each daily segment is identified by a small constellation or a single star. Originally the length of each nakshatra varied, but by the time the Surya Siddhanta was written (c. 500 CE), a classical astronomy text, the segments were fixed to a length of 13 degrees 20 minutes of arc. The Sanskrit term nakshatra translates as “that which does not decay” ( na –not and kshatra – destructible). Naksh can also indicate approaching, to worship, to guard or protect. Tra is a suffix implies a tool or instrument. Thus, the nakshatras are themselves a means of worship. 1 Each nakshatra has a symbol that emphasizes its meaning.     Muhurta Yogas by Ernst Wilhelm Combinations of Vara, Tithi & Nakshatra In Muhurta, each of the Vara, Tithi and Nakshatra is important in itself, yet more important than any of these individually is their combination. The combination of the Vara, Tithi and Nakshatra is the single most important factor for determining whether a particular moment is favorable or unfavorable. So always insure that when you select an auspiscious moment, that the combination of the Vara, Tithi and Nakshatra are favorable. Never, ever, perform any activity when the Vara, Tithi, Nakshatra Yoga is unfavorable, no matter what other good conditions are present in the chart. A table of all the Yogas follows at the end. AUSPISCIOUS VARA/TITHI YOGAS Siddha “accomplished” Yoga: Nanda Tithis on Venus’ Vara; Bhadra Tithis on Mercury’s Vara; Jaya Tithis on Mars’ Vara; Rikta Tithis on Saturn’s Vara; and Purna Tithis on Jupiter’s Vara constitute Siddha Yoga.
