B.A. (McMaster University), M.A. (McMaster University) SUPERVISOR: Professor Daniel Coleman NUMBER OF PAGES: x, 292 ii Abstract In this dissertation I examine the contemporary breakdown of critical feminist dialogues so ubiquitous in the 1990s between Israeli and Palestinian women. Building on interviews with Palestinian women that identify a ―top-down approach‖ in dialogues with Israeli anti-occupation feminist activists, this dissertation examines the role of ―power inequities,‖ Orientalism, and ―white feminist authority‖ (Lâm) in forming the discursive environment for even the most critical feminist dialogues. Conducting various discursive analyses of dialogues between Israeli and Palestinian women, I argue that the mainstream exclusivist Israeli feminist movement as well as ―critical,‖ self-titled anti-racist and ―anti- occupation‖ Israeli feminists continue to function with ―white feminist authority.‖ Palestinian women are often pressured to speak through narrow points of entry that prioritize the paradigms of Western feminism and academic theory, namely, anti- nationalism and unitary womanhood/motherhood. These assumptions constitute a feminist paternalism that is similar to Israeli hegemonic discourses that rationalize ―exceptional‖ but necessary violence against the Palestinians. Palestinian women have initiated a comprehensive boycott of status quo dialogues in an effort to create more dialogue. In this way the ―silences‖ of status quo ―humaniz[ing]‖ feminist dialogues (Lorde) which operate through requests for ―colonial mimicry‖ are troubled by the boycott and may ultimately produce future anti-racist and anti-colonial feminist dialogues. The shortcomings of contemporary Western feminism‘s role in the Israeli- Palestinian ―peace process‖ are brought to light in this dissertation while potentials for solidarity-activism across ―power inequities‖ are simultaneously mapped out. iii Acknowledgements Daniel Coleman: Thanks for all your guidance, encouragement and patience. Focusing on the prominent group Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan), this paper looks at the role its advocacy assumes in the context of the “War on Terror”. In Canada as in the United States, government agencies have justified the military invasion of Afghanistan by revitalizing the oppressed Muslim woman as a medium through which narratives of East versus West are performed. While CW4WAfghan attempt to challenge dominant narratives of Afghan women, they ultimately reinforce and naturalize the Orientalist logic on which the War on Terror operates, even helping to disseminate it through the Canadian school system. Drawing on post-colonial feminist theory, this paper highlights the implications of CW4WAfghan’s Orientalist discourse on women’s rights, and tackles the difficult question of how feminists can show solidarity with Afghan women without adhering to the oppressive narratives that permeate today’s political climate. It is only by employing alternative models that contextualize the situation of Afghan women in relation, rather than in opposition, to our own, that feminists can begin to subvert the mutually reinforcing narratives that sustain imperialist violence and women’s subordination.

    Kovich: Gender at the Barricades 113 Gender at the Barricades: The Politics and Possibilities of the Riot TAMMY KOVICH York University, Canada Introduction: From the Ashes Rioting is a paroxysmic attempt to make and unmake society at the same time and has become the pinnacle of the political socialization process for many… (Truong 2017: 574) The relationship between destruction and creation is a classic preoccupation of revolutionary thought. Mikhail Bakunin, for instance, is arguably best known for his assertion that: “The passion for destruction is, at the same time, a creative passion.” (qtd. in Leier 2009: 111) As tumultuous events that by their very definition include destruction, riots epitomize this adage. Stevphen Shukaitis observes that eruptions of overt political antagonism, such as riots, create circumstances “[i]n which other forms of social life emerge”. (2009: 223) While often conceptualized in terms of negation and futility, they can also represent moments of affirmation and possibility. However fleeting and volatile, riots can present openings, creating moments of exception in which the normal rules no longer apply and liberatory potentialities emerge. This widening of possibility is particu- larly significant in regards to the organization and operation of gender. Reflecting on con- temporary uprisings in the Arab world, El, Said, Meari, and Pratt note that: “[g]endered and sexual norms and identities are malleable in general and particularly in periods of socio-political upheaval”. (2015: 8; emphasis added) They contend that moments of up- heaval provoke socio-political transformation not only in terms of changes to institutions and women’s participation in them, but also changes in “[w]omen’s self-formation, includ- ing their bodily performances”.

    The Sahel region is suffering from multiple forms of recurring violence, Sahel inthe Security and toPeace Threats Transnational weak governance and political instability, which had led to numerous coups and rebellions. In 2012 the Malian government lost control over its northern regions due to the interplay of three security threats with transnational connotations: violent separatism, armed Islamism, and organised crime. This report reviews the causes, manifestations and consequences of the challenges to the state posed by these groups and their current status.     QUALITATIVE STUDIES IN EDUCATION, MAY–JUNE 2003, VOL. 16, NO. 3, 399–414 War and the politics of truth-making in Canada SUNERA THOBANI University of British Columbia Rigoberta Menchu´ has become an icon for the struggles of oppressed peoples for justice and self-determination. For many academics and activists around the world, the accusations of lying made against Ms. Menchu´ by David Stoll brought into sharp focus the politics of “truth- making” and the absolutist categories of fact and fiction. In this attempt to discredit Ms. Menchu,´ and through her, the Mayan experience of genocide by the Guatemalan military and its U.S. sponsors, important questions have been raised about how and when Third World women can speak, the conditions under which they will be heard, and the strategies used to silence them. In this paper, the author draws upon some of the lessons of the Rigoberta Menchu´ case to examine the politics of truth making in Canada in a recent controversy regarding a speech she made criticizing American foreign policy and urging the women’s movement to mobilize against America’s War on Terrorism. The highly personalized nature of the attacks on the author by political and media elites sought to accomplish a closing down of public space for informed debate about the realities of U.S. foreign policy and to silence dissent. Repeatedly emphasizing her status as an immigrant outsider, this controversy also contributed to the (ongoing) racialization of people of color as a treacherous “enemy” within the nation’s geographical borders, against whom “Canadians” had to be mobilized.
