Docs-On-Ice-Oakville We would like to offer your company the opportunity to sponsor the largest Doctors Charity Hockey Tournament in Canada. Docs on Ice is an annual fundraising doctors hockey tournament that began in 1983. It is hosted by a different city each year to raise funds for a local charity in their community. The tournament is run by physicians and volunteers to raise money for charity through donations, sponsorship, registration fees, and special events. It is attended by high profile celebrities, including NHL players and alumni, media personnel, and television personalities. All proceeds go directly to charity. Docs on Ice has grown over the last 29 years to include more than 800 physicians and 100 Medical Students, with over 50 teams from across Ontario. To date, Docs on Ice has raised over $1 million dollars for charity. We are excited to have the 29th annual Docs on Ice tournament in Oakville on April 7, 8, 9 2011. With the generous support of Halton Region, the tournament will be run by the Doctors' Hockey Club, a local group of 50 hockey-playing Physicians from the area. This important event will raise funds for charity in Oakville, bring a positive economic impact to Halton, and have a significant impact on physician recruitment in Halton Region. We are pleased to support the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton as our local charity. The goal is to raise money to create the "Docs on Ice Resource Centre." This state-of-the-art facility will be located in Oakville, and will provide needed resources to the residents of Halton living with Dementia. It will incorporate a computer lab, reference material, and stimulating therapy to enhance healthy brain development. The "Docs on Ice Resource Centre" will also increase opportunities for socialization, counselling, and supports for people and their families with Dementia. With your generous support, Docs on Ice will be an excellent opportunity to showcase your company. You will have unique access to our special audience to promote your products. You will also be recognized as a champion in your community by demonstrating commitment to local charity. By sponsoring Docs on Ice, you will show your support for the community of Oakville, Halton Region, and for the Alzheimer Society. Please review the various levels of sponsorship available, and contact us if you have any questions. Thank you for your support of Docs on Ice. • Flying Wasn't Fun, and for a Number of Years It Fit Right in with Everything
F IFTY IS A BIG NUMBER Flying wasn’t fun, and for a number of years it fit right in with everything else around the team. We just weren’t enjoying the game. For all three of those years that I hit the 50 mark, it was almost like if our line didn’t score we had no chance of winning the game. Billy and Danny Daoust and Tom Fergus, the three centres I played with over those years—I had great chemistry with all of them. But a lot of nights it felt like we were on our own. And I hated losing more than I liked winning. That’s the way I was as a kid; I didn’t like losing at anything. To put those seasons in historical perspective, a number of Leafs had gotten close to 50 in years past: Frank Mahovlich had his 48 goals, and then Lanny McDonald had seasons with 46, 47 and 43; Darryl had 45 one year. And then Gary Leeman scored 51 during the 1989–90 season. Dave Andreychuk became the third Leaf to do it, in 1992–93, although there’s an asterisk of sorts next to that one because he scored 29 of the goals with Buffalo, and then 25 with the Leafs over 83 games. The next season, he scored 53, all of them with the Leafs. So, just the three of us. So far. John Tavares, the current Leafs captain, had 47 in Toronto in 2018–19, and Auston Matthews had 47 and counting in 70 games, on pace for 55, when the 2019–20 season was paused by the 97 Vaiv_9780735280298_all_5p_r1.indd 97 2020-09-09 2:00 PM CATCH 22 COVID-19 virus.
