    A Review of the Post-WWII Baseball Card Industry Artie Zillante University of North Carolina Charlotte November 25th,2007 1Introduction If the attempt by The Upper Deck Company (Upper Deck) to purchase The Topps Company, Inc. (Topps) is successful, the baseball card industry will have come full circle in under 30 years. A legal ruling broke the Topps monopoly in the industry in 1981, but by 2007 the industry had experienced a boom and bust cycle1 that led to the entry and exit of a number of firms, numerous innovations, and changes in competitive practices. If successful, Upper Deck’s purchase of Topps will return the industry to a monopoly. The goal of this piece is to look at how secondary market forces have shaped primary market behavior in two ways. First, in the innovations produced as competition between manufacturers intensified. Second, in the change in how manufacturers competed. Traditional economic analysis assumes competition along one dimension, such as Cournot quantity competition or Bertrand price competition, with little consideration of whether or not the choice of competitive strategy changes. Thus, the focus will be on the suggested retail price (SRP) of cards as well as on the timing of product releases in the industry. Baseballcardshaveundergonedramaticchangesinthepasthalfcenturyastheindustryandthehobby have matured, but the last 20 years have provided a dramatic change in the types of products being produced. Prior to World War II, baseball cards were primarily used as premiums or advertising tools for tobacco and candy products. It cannot be overstated what this World Series journey has meant to the City of Houston, still in the early stages of rebuilding after Hurricane Harvey. There’s almost nothing more nostalgic than the memories of a hometown championship, so the fact that Houston’s first World Series titles came less than two months after Hurricane Harvey helps make otherwise bitter memories a little more sweet for Houstonians. As such, with baseball and (as always) the markets currently top of mind for all of us at Crossmark Global Investments, we thought combining some thoughts on the two a befitting way to headline our monthly portfolio commentaries.     To My Fellow Hobbyists, 2010. Sounds almost like the title of a comic book I read as a kid. As we embark on a new decade, our entire staff at Huggins and Scott is looking forward to working with all of you to make this hobby we all love more enjoyable for everyone. With 2009 behind us, our plans for the upcoming year include a few changes requested by many of our bidders and consignors. First we are planning to run 5 auctions in 2010. They will end on the last Wednesday and Thursday of every odd month. Our May and September auctions will be a new format with many items that will sell in the $200-$500 range. Our March, July and November auctions will focus more on larger lots. For 2009 we tried a new style buyers premium scale for our 4 auctions. After reviewing all the feedback and results, we have decided this idea may have been ahead of its time, so for now we are returning to the industry standard of one buyers premium for all items--not to say we would be opposed to revisiting this concept in the future. Finally, with the National Convention in our hometown this year, we are planning several special promotions around the show for all our clients. Make sure you put the National in Baltimore on your schedule this summer, and we hope to meet and greet many of you at the show. With all that said once again our dedicated team has outdone itself in assembling this fantastic array of rare, unusual and even one-of-a-kind items.
