Friday Night Lights H. G. Bissinger Da Capo Press Non-Fiction/Sports 366
Friday Night Lights H. G. Bissinger Da Capo Press Non-Fiction/Sports 366 pages Copyright year: 1990 A Life you will Never Forget By: Brandon H When you ask most people "what is the book Friday Night Lights about?" your most likely to get an answer that is "oh it’s about the football team who lost in the championship" but, although that is true, there is much more detail than just that. Friday Night Lights by H.G Bissinger is one of the greatest novels I have read. (Over the numerous amounts of years I have been reading for). A young group of boys learn how to cope with racism and overcome obstacles that most people at their age would never be able to do. The players on the Permian Panthers learn how to maintain their act on and off the field as the coaches pushed them to be the best they possibly can. It was always hard for the players to accept each other for what they looked like because in the town of Odessa, Texas, whites cannot accept the black citizens. There was a line clearly drawn between the players but will quickly learn how to overcome the impossible. The head coach of the Permian Panthers, Gary Gaines, always has had an intelligent mind when it came to football and acted as the scapegoat to the team when something went wrong. The people of Odessa had extremely high standards for the football team putting a great amount of pressure on Coach Gaines. In Texas, football means everything to the people as kids and young adults start playing at extremely young ages. -

A Study of the Portrayal of Racism in the Book, Film, and Television Versions of H.G

BISSINGER'S FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Ritger til B.A.-prófs Heimir Berg Vilhjálmsson Kt.: 261082-5949 Leibeinandi: Julian Meldon D’Arcy Febrúar 2009 2 ABSTRACT This essay is about H.G. Bissinger’s non-fictional book Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream and its portrayal of racism in connection with a small Texan town’s high school football team. The portrayal of racism in the book will be compared to how two other versions of the story confront the subject, and which version addresses it most effectively. The other versions discussed consist of a Hollywood feature film released in 2004, produced by Brian Grazer and directed by Peter Berg, which bears the name of the book, and the first season of a television series, produced and directed by the same producer and director of the movie, released in 2006, and which also holds the original name (IMDB). Although the blatant racism that Bissinger reveals as the norm in West Texas during his residence in the depressing oil town of Odessa is confronted separately by all three versions, they portray the problem in different ways and are therefore subject to comparison. This essay is going to reveal through evidence, argument and discussion, that it is in fact the original book by the author Bissinger that shines the clearest light on the issue of racism. -

I had only heard of it on blogs a Team then and never really paid any attention to it. Bissinger moved his family to Odessa and spent the entire football season with the Permian Panther players, their families, their coaches, and even many of the townspeople in an effort to understand the town and its football-mad culture. For example, in the and a Dream of the novel they described Odessa the town and Boobie Miles star running back extremely well. The oil-patch town of Odessa, Texas, lives for one thing: - 09.1... http://cnnsi.printthis.clickability.com/pt/cpt?expire=&title=The+... Powered by September 17, 1990 Friday Night Lights The oil-patch town of Odessa, Texas, lives for one thing: the start of the high school football season H.G. Bissinger The faithful sat on little stools of orange and blue under the merciless lights of the high school cafeteria, but the spartan setting didn't bother them a bit. Had the booster club's Watermelon Feed been held inside the county jail, or on a sinking ship, or on the side of a craggy mountain, these fans still would have flocked there. Outside, the August night was cool and serene, with just a wisp of West Texas wind. Inside, there was a sense of excitement and also relief, for the waiting was basically over—no more sighs of longing, no more awkward groping to fill up the empty spaces of time with golf games and thoroughly unsatisfying talk about baseball. Tonight the boys of Permian High School in Odessa would come before the crowd, one by one, to be introduced. And in less than two weeks, on the first Friday night in September, the march to state—to the Texas high school championship finals—would begin with the first game of the season. By the time the Watermelon Feed began, there were about 800 people crammed into the cafeteria. They had come dressed up for the event, not in black tie or anything outlandish like that, but in Permian Panther black—black caps, black shirts, black pants, black jackets. -

To their peers, their teachers, their counselors, their parents, town officials, and to basically everyone else in their sheltered world, high school football is the most important thing they will ever have. Overall, though, the writing is good. The game is a Team on October 28, The author touches on issues of race, class, divisions within the city, impacts of the mid's slump in oil prices on the town's economy. The main problem is that this book is about so many things - the history of the town, the lives of the people in it, and obviously, football. Bissinger uses Boobie as an example of the negative effect high school football can have its players. The writing is excellent. Permian first defeats Tascosa High School in And a Dream 21—7. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Sporting Bodies, Displaying History: Black Embodiment and Performance in Contemporary Sports Films A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Samantha Noelle Sheppard 2014 © Copyright by Samantha Noelle Sheppard 2014 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Sporting Bodies, Displaying History: Black Embodiment and Performance in Contemporary Sports Films by Samantha Noelle Sheppard Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Kathleen McHugh, Co-Chair Professor Allyson Nadia Field, Co-Chair In this dissertation I analyze Black embodiment and performance in contemporary sports films, particularly through their documentary impulse, the gestures and markers through which these films establish their reference to real sporting and non-sporting bodies and histories. I argue that through this impulse, sports films make claims to an historical real, and they can therefore be explored for how they represent the Black sporting body. Though my project focuses primarily on fiction films, I begin by analyzing this impulse in a sports documentary for how it represents the performance and embodiment of the Black sporting body as an historical contestant. I then trace these strategies as they appear in and shape sports in fiction films, ii specifically through narratives of triumph and defeat, dissent, and gendered visibility. Throughout, I focus on and read the Black sporting body as a an individuated multiplicity which, through performance and embodiment, represents, references, and relates to Black sporting and non-sporting embodied histories and experiences. Sports films offer a privileged viewpoint on Black embodiment because of their high concentration of Black actors, one that mirrors representation in contemporary athletics. -
