She is the series editor of the four-volume Edinburgh Edition of the Collected Works of Katherine Mansfield (2012–2016). Kimber is author of Katherine Mansfield: The Early Years (2016), Katherine Mansfield and the Art of the Short Story (2015), and Katherine Mansfield: The View from France (2008). Katherine Mansfield employed free indirect discourse, literary impressionism, and the innovative use of time and symbolism, culminating in her position as one of the most important early exponents of the modernist short story. Mansfield’s fiction—and literary modernism as a whole—is associated with a rejection of conventional plot structure and dramatic action in favor of the presentation of character through narrative voice. Many different influences converged to create Mansfield’s own personal aesthetic philosophy, which continually evolved and developed throughout her short lifetime. She presents a down- to-earth kind of “truth,” with its foundations in her observations of the everyday world. -

Her stories are sensitive revelations of human behaiour in quite ordinary situations, through which we can glimpse a powerful, and sometimes cruelly pessimistic view of life. A Dill Pickle is one of her short stories published in 1917, describing the encounter between a young woman and a young man who have been lovers six years ago and their lost love and changes over the years. Short as it is, it is really worth our carful analysis and appreciation. This paper will comment on this short story from the following two aspects: a commont on the theme of the story; a comment on the writing technique of the story. The paper conludes that romantic love is dependent upon circumstances and the convergence of certain character traits at a particular time. Throughout her life , she led a wandering life in search of health and wrote under difficulties. And most of her works are from the recreation of her experineces with the theme of women’s disillusion and loneliness. A Dill Pickle, completed in 1917, is one of her most significant masterpieces and it is based on her own experience. -

17 Chapter 2 MANSFIELD’S SELECTED WORKS: THEMES AND LITERARY TECHNIQUES Even though Katherine Mansfield’s literary career began almost a century ago, her works seem to find no end in the literary world. Each of her stories presents experiences, feelings, and thoughts with which people of all ages can share. However, influences of her time can be found: new ways in presenting arts, Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, the revolt against class distinction and her contemporary feeling of uncertainty in modern world (McRae and Carter, 2000 : vii, xi). These contribute to her themes and sophisticated techniques, especially her unconventional plotlines, as well as her language style which evokes senses, probes human psyche, creates realism, and encourages readers to fill in the unsaid parts. To give a background on the nine selected works by Mansfield, their themes and literary techniques will be investigated. Themes Mansfield’s literary life developed during her living in London. After moving to London in 1908, she participated in discussions with prominent literary figures such as D.H. Laurence and Virginia Woolf on “socialism, feminism, woman suffrage and Freudian psychology,” and produced her own works (Phillimore, 1989 : 21). Like those writers, she critically observed the ideas of post- Victorian Era (Phillimore, 1989 : 8) and paid special attention to human interactions and psychological exploration. The major themes of her works include initiation, isolation and loneliness, class distinction, hardship of the poor, and human instincts. All of them related to both the contemporary Zeitgeist as well as her own experience. The most important movement during her literary career was Modernism, which was characterized by a negative reaction against optimism, positivism, and 17 18 certainty in Victorian and Edwardian Eras. -

Noticeably influenced by the warm writing style of Anton Chekhov, by the bucolic ancient Greek poet Theocritus, by her forceful contemporaries (mostly D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf), by her tuberculosis, and, perhaps most significantly, by her early life in rural New Zealand, Mansfield’s stories invite the reader to bear witness to small details and emotional responses to significant moments in ordinary but intensely experienced lives. According to her two main biographers, Jeffrey Meyers and Anthony Alpers, Mansfield is greatly responsible for the development and validation of the short story as an important literary genre. -

A feminist exploration of Katherine Mansfield’s search for authentic selves in a selection of short stories. Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923), British Modernist writer whose search for authentic selves in the lives of the characters in her short stories, is reflected in her innovative style of writing in which she examines the interior consciousness of their minds. Mansfield questions the inauthentic lives of the characters, revealing that the roles they play are socially imposed forcing them to hide their true selves behind masks. The stories which have been chosen for this study focus on women characters (and men also) who grapple with societal prescriptions for accepted actions, and are rendered mute as a result. The women characters include all age groups and social classes. Some are young and impressionable (The Tiredness of Rosabel, The Little Governess and The Garden Party), others are married and older (Bliss, Prelude and Frau Brechenmacher attends a wedding ), while there are also middle- aged women in Miss Brill and The Life of Ma Parker. Accepted 8 October, 2018 ABSTRACT The study aims to demonstrate the negative treatment of women and the purpose behind this treatment in selected short stories by Katherine Mansfield and Ernest Hemingway. Mansfield depicted her female characters as paralysed, invisible women or victims. She concentrated on representing the systematic and determined victimisation of women in a society with an intellectual belief in the survival of the fittest. Meanwhile, in Hemingway's stories appeared to be shallow-minded, heart-breakers or portents of destruction. They become the source of moral, emotional and mental anguish for male characters. Both authors contributed greatly, to modern literature, especially to female culture. They also helped the reader to understand the difficult conditions for women in Western society during their time. Journal of English Studies Katherine Mansfield’s Experiment with the Multi-personal Point of View as a Method of Characterization in “Prelude” and “At the Bay” Phanida Simaporn Thammasat University, Pathumthani, Thailand Email: [email protected] Abstract This research article focuses on Katherine Mansfield’s experiment with the multi-personal point of view as a method of characterization. For the earlier literary critics, Katherine Mansfield was considered a minor author. However, her reputation has risen and she has been reconsidered as a very influential Modernist author. One reason that contributes to her reputation is her narrative technique. The aim of this study is to depict her experiment with the multi-personal point of view that she used in her two most exceptional New Zealand stories, “Prelude” and “At the Bay”. In using such a technique, Mansfield had the focalization shift from one character to another and this allows the characters to give their perspectives. Consequently, Mansfield could successfully reveal what their thoughts, conflicts, attitudes, personality and secret self are and what impact they have on each other and on the reader as well. Given that the plot line in her stories does not rise much, the multi-personal point of view allows the reader to gain insight into the psychological state of her characters and to grasp the essence of life Mansfield wants to express to her reader. RICE UNIVERSITY ALIENATION IN THE LIFE AND WORKS OF KATHERINE MANSFIELD by Bettye Sutherland Middleton A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF Master of Arts Thesis Director’s signature: Houston, Texas May 1966 Abstract ALIENATION IN THE LIFE AND WORKS OF KATHERINE MANSFIELD by Bettye Sutherland Middleton Katherine Mansfield,' a British short story writer of the first part of the twentieth century, lived in the chaotic social and cultural atmosphere that marks this age, a time when old traditions were crumbling, belief in the established faiths suffered attacks of doubt, and the rise of the industrialized economy created an atmosphere of widespread alienation. Mansfield was not exempt from the influence of this instability in social conditions nor from the anxieties of estrangement and alienation from life around her. In Chapter One, this thesis attempts to establish the general tone and atmosphere of alienation suffered by the age and to examine some of the causes for this estrangement. Under the influence of this atmosphere, Mansfield experienced a personal sense of alienation, experiences which affected her vision of life and reflected in her literary creations. Alienation, on the personal level from which Mansfield developed her message, is a process which can have several levels or degrees of Intensity. Sortie levels of alienation may be of equivalent intensity, while other degrees are obviously more intense and agonizing. Mansfield’s works have been divided, in Chapter Two, into various types or degrees of alienation which she attempted to portray. One type is the aliena¬ tion between friends and lovers, which does not seem to be as intense a stage of alienation on the whole as in the involvement of closer ties of affection, such as parent-child alienation or husband-wife alienation. -
