The Fusion of Enlightenment and Hospitality The Fusion of Enlightenment and Hospitality B A L R A M P U R NEXT BUDDHAM SHARANAM GACHCHAMI LUMBINI The birthplace of Prince Siddhartha. He renounced riches in favour of seeking Peace and Enlightenment as Gautama Buddha. Here is the seat of Buddhism, a religion which blossomed and spread across the world. KAPILVASTU Though he grew up in opulent surroundings, Gautama Buddha decided to seek truth and the path of salvation in this capital city of the Sakya clan. The ruins have several stupas with stone caskets containing relics believed to be those of the Enlightened One. KAUSHAMBI SHAMBI Buddha visited here in the sixth and ninth years after his enlightenment and delivered several discourses, elevating this city to a centre of learning for the devout. The ruins of an ancient fort are testimony to its antiquity. SARNATH The Dhamek stupa here is said to be the place where Buddha preached his first sermon, while he met his first five disciples at the Choukhandi stupa. A’bodhi’ sapling which has grown into a widespread tree in the grounds of the Mahabodhi Society Temple (Mulagandha kuti Vihar) is widely believed to be the offshoot of the one under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Sarnath is a Buddhist pilgrimage centre with few parallels. KUSHINAGAR Earlier known as Kushinara, it is believed that Buddha attained ’Mahaparinirvana’ (release from the endless cycle of birth and rebirth) here. The statue of the reclining Buddha at the temple is one of the most sacred sights for the pilgrim and a mound of bricks marks the place where Buddha is said to have been cremated HOME NEXT SRAVASTI This city has emerged as a nucleus for Buddhism. It was here that Buddha spent 24 monsoons, preaching regularly amid age-old stupas and temples. To convince sceptics, legend relates that he sat on a thousand-petalled lotus and multiplied his image a million times. His most vociferous critics were silenced and began to believe in his enlightened powers. However, the historic significance of this built form has evolved through time, as has its rudimentary structure. The massive dome-shaped “anda” form which has now become synonymous with the idea of this Buddhist shrine, is the result of years of cultural, social and geographical influences. The beauty of this typology of architecture lies in its intricate details, interesting motifs and immense symbolism, reflected and adapted in various local contexts across the world. Today, the word “stupa” is used interchangeably while referring to monuments such as pagodas, wat, etc. This paper is, therefore, an attempt to understand the ideology and the concept of a stupa, with a focus on tracing its history and transition over time. The main objective of the research is not just to understand the essence of the architectural and theological aspects of the traditional stupa but also to understand how geographical factors, advances in material, and local socio-cultural norms have given way to a much broader definition of this word, encompassing all forms, from a simplistic mound to grand, elaborate sanctums of great value to architecture and society

The Haryana State Archaeology Department, Panchkula, and the Archaeological Survey of India, Chandigarh circle, two premier bodies for heritage conservation and preservation in the state have failed to highlight the significance of the sites to the global Buddhist community. According to The Buddhist Forum, a watchdog organisation concerning the Ancient Buddhist sites in India and Asia, there are 22 ancient sites in Haryana which have potential to be listed in the category of protected heritage monuments of the state or the Centre. Land of sojourns and sermons Around 2500 years ago, the Buddha started delivering his sermons from Sarnath, now in Uttar Pradesh, and gave one of the most important sermons of his lifetime Maha Sati Patthana Sutta in what is now Haryana. Strangely, since its creation in 1966, Haryana did not recognise the importance and potential of this site to promote it under pilgrimage tourism, whereas it created tourist places of repute at places with almost no historical background, especially on the National Highway.

Introduction to Ashoka Ashoka Comic Book Ashoka Maurya ruled almost the entire Indian subcontinent from c. 268 to 232 BCE. Rapidly rising to fame, he went on to become one of India's greatest ever emperors. His realm spanned the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan, to present-day Bangladesh in the East. Barring small regions in present-day Tamil Nadu and Kerala, his rule spread over all of India. Pataliputra in Magadha (present-day Bihar) was his capital – he also maintained provincial capitals at Takshashila and Ujjaini. In 260 BCE, King Ashoka waged a great war against Kalinga (present-day Odisha) and won the same. All his ancestors had failed at their previous attempts to conquer this region. The war brought on much destruction, which saddened him. He started looking for inner peace and finally embraced Buddhism. He later dedicated his entire life for the propagation of Buddhism, eventually coming to be known as one of the greatest ever philanthropists that the motherland gave birth to. Theravada has the following in Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka, and Mahayana in the west, north and then east across Asia. Initially, Buddhism remained one of the many small sects in India. The main breakthrough came when King Asoka (ca. 270-232 BCE) converted to Buddhism. He organized the spread of Buddhism throughout India, but also beyond, the most important of Sri Lanka.
