  • The Ambivalent Identity of Wong Kar-Wai's Cinema

  • Brotherly Relations: Self and (M)Other in Conjoined Twin Films
Brotherly Relations: Self and (M)Other in Conjoined Twin Films Juliana de Nooy and Bronwyn Statham, University of Queensland, Australia; Griffith University, Australia Prompting fascination and fear since mythological times, twins continue to haunt our imagination. Identical, non-identical, conjoined, mutant, telepathic, homicidal, buddies, soul- mates or jealous rivals, twins feature in scores of films across a range of genres; comedy, drama, thriller, horror, sci-fi, action and auteur cinema. Amidst this apparently infinite variety, however, insistent patterns occur (De Nooy and Statham, 1998). In this paper we focus on a particular sub-set of twin films -- recent horror films featuring male conjoined twins -- to show some surprising regularities of representation. Specifically, these narratives of fraternal attachment and separation represent the twin relation as maternal. Our aim is twofold, to demonstrate this striking pattern (in our analysis of Dead Ringers, Basket Case I and II, an episode of The X-Files, and The Dark Half) and to account for it. We argue that existing work on the representation of the body in contemporary horror only partially explains the emergence of this phenomenon, and that the pattern needs to be understood as a highly specific configuration of genre (horror), gender (male) and topos (conjoined twins) that lends itself to the rehearsal of a cultural anxiety regarding gender (male maternity). The discursive power of this configuration is demonstrated in our reading of Twin Falls Idaho. This film is not in the horror genre, and it repeatedly uses the metaphor of marriage, rather than motherhood, to describe conjoined twins Francis and Blake’s relationship.

Media Asia Film Production Limited All Rights Reserved 1 rd The 73 Cannes Official Selection Septet: The Story of Hong Kong《七人樂隊》 An omnibus film presented by Media Asia and China Film Media, a production of Milkyway Image, Septet: The Story of Hong Kong has been selected for the official lineup of the 73rd Cannes Film Festival. The film is composed of seven short films in honor of Hong Kong by seven of the city’s most revered directors - Tsui Hark, Ann Hui, Sammo Hung, Patrick Tam, Yuen Wo Ping, Ringo Lam, and Johnnie To, who produced the film and directed one of the seven segments. It is another Johnnie To’s film selected by Cannes Film Festival after Breaking News, Election, Triangle, Vengeance and Blind Detective. It all began with an idea by Johnnie To: despite their renowned international repute and countless accolades under their belts, many Hong Kong directors of his generation still share the same passion for filmmaking and an unwavering love for their city. Johnnie To rallied his like-minded director friends Sammo Hung, Ann Hui, Patrick Tam, Yuen Wo Ping, Ringo Lam, and Tsui Hark to make a movie about Hong Kong. It would be shot on film as a tribute to the bygone era of filmmaking, and the stories would span from the 50s to the future. Each director shot a short movie around 10 minutes each for their allotted decade. Each segment would be a special melody imprinted with the director’s feelings for Hong Kong. Seven of Hong Kong’s most revered directors with distinctly unique styles come together for the first time to compose a symphony of stories for their city.

Most of these films have been released under more than one title, and while we've done our best to use the one that's most likely to be familiar, that doesn't guarantee you aren't trying to find Crippled Avengers and don't know we've got it as The Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms. And so, we've gathered as many alternative titles as we can find, including their original language title(s), and arranged them in alphabetical order in this index to help you out. Remember, English language articles ("a", "an", "the") are ignored in the sort, but foreign articles are NOT ignored. Hey, my Japanese is a little rusty, and some languages just don't have articles. • Chapter 1 Chapter 2
Notes Chapter 1 1. I have analysed part of this series (texts by Ovid, Freud and Lacan) in an earlier article (de Nooy, 1991b). 2. I take ‘topos’ to refer not simply to a topic (such as twins) but to its embedding in a particular thematic arrangement or ‘place’ – conjoined twins, twins as sexual rivals, good and evil twins, the author and his twin/double, the incestu- ous twin couple, twins in enemy camps, twins separated at birth – which will tend to coincide with its occurrence in a particular genre. 3. The notion of retelling is not intended to imply that at some point of origin there exists a master-story, which is then reproduced in the form of versions of the original. Rather than assuming a hierarchy between renditions, I follow Barbara Herrnstein-Smith in understanding all stories as particular retellings, ‘constructed by someone in particular, on some occasion, for some purpose’ (1981: 167). Thus telling always involves some retelling, some gesture towards existing stories, and retelling entails both repetition and difference. 4. Rank’s ‘Der Doppelgänger’ was first published in 1914 and substantially revised in 1925. English (1971) and French (1973) translations exist. I shall refer to both on occasion, as the work translated in the French volume includes additional chapters, one of which is devoted to twinship (cf. the publication history detailed in Rank, 1971: vii–ix). 5. The relative coherence of the Romantic literature of the double – or at least of the established canon of works representing it – makes it possible to conceive of The Theme of The Double during this period: a singular theme of a paradoxically singular double.
