Rabbi Carla Freedman

Last year, our movement published a new makhzor (the root of this word has to do with return- ing, as in a cycle; hence the song, “return again” is exactly appropriate for the beginning of the festivals which the new makhzor serves). Many Reform congregations took advantage of the significant discounts available pre-publication, to switch from the old High Holy Days** prayer book to this new one, and we were proudly amongst them.

For us, there are certain advantages to the new books (we should note that the new makhzor comes in separate volumes for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur). First, these new books bor- row heavily from some stylistic tactics that were introduced some years ago in the Shabbat and Festivals prayer books, Mishkan T’filah. These include the placement of the Hebrew text, with almost a literal translation, on a right-hand page, and interpretive readings of the same text on the facing left-hand page. Second, like the Shabbat and Festivals books, the new makhzor features complete transliterations for all the Hebrew in the books, side by side with the Hebrew.

The editors of the new makhzor added a lot of additional readings to the books, some intended for personal reflection, others intended as options to the traditional liturgy. They inserted texts for study and perhaps even for discussion, both from our traditional sources and from contemporary writers.

They also made changes in the of some parts of the services, which service leaders are free to accept or change, and they offered some choices for Torah readings as well.

So the new makhzor, Mishkan HaNefesh, is a very rich companion to the High Holy Days services. But that doesn’t mean that congregants (or service leaders!) are instantly adept at using it.

So we are going to spend some time during September, which almost directly corresponds, this year, with the Jewish calendar’s month of Elul, to become better acquainted with Mishkan HaNefesh. The month of Elul is traditionally used to prepare for the High Holy Days, and on Thursday afternoons, from 3:00 to 4:30, we will do just that.

We will hand out the books, and look through them to get a better appreciation of the flow of the services, the separate parts of the services, and how they are both the same as and different from our regular Shabbat services. We’ll look at the Torah readings and the Haftarah readings, to understand why these were chosen for the High Holy Days. And we’ll use the opportunity to consider some of the additional readings, to understand how they may enrich our apprecia- tion of the themes and messages of these special occasions.

It is my hope that these four sessions will help us all to get more out of, and to put more into, our High Holy Days ser- vices this year. I look forward to seeing you there.

**Please note: I think that High Holy Days better conveys the nature of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur than High Holidays.

2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “A person who feels appreciated will always do more than is expected”. My niece posted this on Facebook recently (yes I do belong to Facebook to see what family and friends are up to) and it touched me. As President of Beth Israel there are times when my head is spinning with all of the individual recommendations about a certain situation or complaints about an- other situation, but what you don’t know is how many times I have people telling me how much they appreciate all that Beth Israel gives them; friendships, spirituality, a sense of home, intellectual stimu- lation, community, joy, emotional support. All of these descriptions are reflections on each of you.

Without even knowing it as you speak with fellow congregants, learn with them, eat with them and laugh with them you bring a sense of appreciation to them. As the quote states, knowing what you bring to others, you get back more as well. With this in mind I want to ask YOU to think about joining the team of Jewish “worker bees” who sustain the temple everyday of every week of every month. There are two positions available on our Board of Directors beginning in January; Financial Secretary and Program Director. If you are interested in or even curious about either of these positions, please let Delyse Axinn know; she is one of the members of the nominating committee. Remember, a per- son who feels appreciated will always do more than is expected. Join the team that moves the con- gregation and be the recipient of true appreciation.

We all know the adage “silence is golden” and probably have experienced the calming affect that si- lence has. So it is true in our Shabbat services. Everyone comes to services with different agendas; meaningful prayer, Torah learning, uplifting singing, and socialization. The Rabbi has led us in an ex- ercise to let go of the hectic week at the beginning of our services so that we can get all that we need to get from the service. Your voices in song are simply beautiful; I know from sitting on the bima. But your voices talking to one another during the service, or calling out to ask a question/make a com- ment when it is not “Ask the Rabbi” are in fact distracting to other congregants. So I ask you to re- member to use your voice to read with the congregation, to sing, to pray, but don’t use it to converse during the service.

Heart to Heart,

Joanne 3

Sisterhood President

Welcome to fall and what is traditionally the beginning of our busiest holiday season. This year the High Holy Days begin in October. As it happens all the holidays in October fall on a Tuesday. Because of that, the Sisterhood open- ing meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 27th at 1 pm in the Henry Gibson Social Hall. Our guest speaker will be Pennye Scheiber. Pennye has over 20 years of experience playing and teaching students to play the hammered dulcimer. This is an instrument that actually dates back to biblical times and we will have the opportunity to learn something about its’ history and hear it played. You don’t want to miss this unusual program!

Since there is no Sisterhood meeting in October, if you want to join us for the Paid-up Luncheon on Tuesday, Novem- ber 1st please make sure that your dues are paid by the September 27th meeting. For members of the Temple the cost is $18. If you do not belong to the Temple, please send a check for $36.

The next meeting of the Women of Faith will be held on Thursday, September 8th at 10 am at St. John the Divine (next door to the Temple). Please join us as we gather with women from many of the houses of in the Sun City Center community. It is always a wonderful experienced to be a part of these gatherings. Refreshments are served following the program.

Enjoy what is left of the summer, and I look forward to seeing you at our opening meeting on September 27th. May we go from strength to strength. Rochelle

9 ASK THE RABBI

QUESTION : I have been away for a while this summer. So I was surprised at the beginning of the service, when I returned, that you are beginning it with a kind of meditation. Why are you doing this? I miss the singing we used to do at the beginning of the service.

ANSWER : I began to do this a while back, after it became problematic that people continued to chat during the opening of the service, and some people just talked all the way through the service. It seemed to me that I needed to direct people through a more contem- plative entry into the service, and away from the chatter that many others complained about. There had been instances when people actually talked audibly during the silent prayer, which clearly disturbed others.

So I began to ask people to leave behind whatever had happened to them in the past week, to enter into the service and to consider how they will use the service to accomplish their goal for being at temple that Shabbat evening.

That latter idea reflects my view, that the service is not a performance, and that one only gets out of it what one is willing to put into it. While I can choose readings and prayers, and include a lot of congregational singing, and take us through the Torah service, and even offer some thoughts or ideas that will get people thinking, I do not do all this in a vacuum. We do this together. And we need to be together from the very beginning, and throughout the ser- vice. As for the singing: some weeks we do some singing at the beginning, and some weeks we do not. I try to vary the readings too, though we are limited by what is in the prayer book, of course. I try to respect people’s desire to sing old, familiar melodies to our prayers while factoring in my appreciation of some of the newer music that is being written for those same prayers.

But none of this matters if people do not engage with the service. So I have begun to ask people to set aside all else, and be present to the experience of welcoming Shabbat. I am pleased to say that there has been much less chatter during services since I started this, and the feedback I have received has been encouraging.

What I am doing is certainly different from what I did before, and I hope you will find it useful, as apparently others have, to shift gears and “get into” the service in a reflective state of mind.

Please let me know.

Social Action Committee Upcoming Activities Harvey (Harv) Berman (Chair)

Beth Israel’s membership once again will continue to support the Metropolitan Ministries’ (MM) efforts “Feeding the Hungry” during the remaining calendar months ending in December 2016. The group’s efforts have been very successful in this endeavor and have gotten several accolades from the MM staff because of our involvement during each function. My sincere thanks go out to the following folks that have come forward to support this effort: Cyrille and Bob Cobe, Nancy Binder, Bob Rogin and Nancy Nova. If I have left you off this list I apologize and also thank you for your help.

With the High Holiday’s that will soon be upon us – Beth Israel will once again non-perishable food items to include baby food and diapers, etc. to support those needy families in the Sun City Center and surrounding communities. Last year we collected 84 large bags of food that was delivered to “Our Lady of Quadalupe” and it is hoped that we will be able to surpass this number and collect at least 100 bags. It is very difficult understand that in our country families are going without because of rising cost of food and medicine -- and thus have to make very difficult decisions as to what direction to go – buy food, medicine and even the simplest of clothing items. So in the next several months as “we” all go into our favorite food stores, I urge you all to make a conscious decision and start putting away items that will best meet the needs of those families.

My sincere thanks….Harv
