The vibrant, multicultural city of Adelaide was founded in 1836 by Colonel Light who had a simple vision and plan: a one square mile city centre and lots of open space. He laid out the streets in a grid, surrounded by a ring of what are now State Heritage Listed parklands. The city centre is a beautiful blend of historic and modern buildings, wide streets, gardens, squares, cafes and restaurants. The New York Times has described Adelaide as the ‘Culinary Capital of Australia.’ It is the home of frog cakes, pie floaters and Penfold’s Grange. For ambience, fresh local produce and food, there is the Adelaide Central Market. Adelaide is renowned for its rich cultural and artistic life. The city is small enough to be friendly and welcoming, yet large enough to provide plenty of attractions and entertainment. The newly renovated Adelaide Oval was opened this year and the Torrens River is a beautiful area. With a population of slightly more than one million, Adelaide is the “20 minute city”. The airport is only seven kilometres from Adelaide city – fare is approximately $30.00. The Adelaide Hills and major beaches are less than half an hour away by car. A very accessible city and State ! The Lonely Planet Guide voted Adelaide as one of the top 10 must visit cities for 2014 – they described our fair city as, "A gateway to some of Australia’s most accessible wine country, Adelaide is effortlessly chic – and like a perfectly cellared red, it’s ready to be uncorked and sampled”. We’re proud to be Australia’s wine capital, with numerous regions on our doorstep – including the Barossa Valley, which is just an hour’s drive from Adelaide, and other wine regions such as the Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. Other attractions include: the outback landscapes of Flinders Ranges, Victor Harbor, Granite Island and the unspoilt wilderness and beaches of Kangaroo Island. Why not take the opportunity to stay a few extra days after the conference and savour some of the wonderful treasures that our city and state have to offer ? You'll love Adelaide - we do!
