TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals face the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Thursday in the second and final meeting between the teams this season. The Capitals have won two of the last three games they've played against the Sharks.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT Penalty S-Kill - Since Feb. 1, the Capitals have killed 18 of the 20 penalties they've faced (90.0 percent), the fifth-highest rate in the NHL, while ranking third in shorthanded time on ice (37:23) in that span. The Capitals have not allowed a power play goal in five of their last seven games, posting a 4-2-1 record during that seven-game time frame and are 20-5-1 this season when they don't allow a power play goal. Since Jan. 1, Braden Holtby ranks first in the NHL in power play save percentage (.900) and is tied for first in power play goals allowed (six, minimum 13 games played).

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Great 8 - Alex Ovechkin recorded his 1,186th career point (645g, 541a) against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, passing Rod Brind’Amour (452g, 732a) for 48th place on the NHL’s all-time points list. Ovechkin now sets his sights on becoming the 48th player in NHL history to record at least 1,200 career points. Sharks forward Joe Thornton (407g, 1,050a) is the only active player to reach the benchmark. The NHL’s leading goal scorer is averaging 1.14 points per game this season, with 25 games remaining. At his current pace, Ovechkin is on track for his sixth-career season with at least 90 points, which would move him into sole possession of 44th on the NHL’s all-time list – (, Vincent Damphousse, Bernie Nicholls and Bobby Clarke). Ovechkin leads the NHL with 38 goals this season and is aiming to break a tie with (seven times) for the most times an individual has led the NHL in goals in a season. Ovechkin (33 years, 201 days as of the final day of the regular season) can become the sixth player in NHL history to lead the NHL in goals at age 33 or older (Bill Cook, 1932-33: 36 years, 165 days; Gordie Howe, 1962-63: 34 years, 358 days; Nels Stewart, 1936-37: 34 years, 82 days; Maurice Richard, 1954-55: 33 years, 228 days; Phil Esposito,1974-75: 33 years, 45 days).

Super Carly - John Carlson is three assists shy of 300 assists, and he can become the third defenseman in franchise history to record 300 assists (Calle Johansson: 361 assists; Scott Stevens: 331 assists). Over the last two seasons, Carlson has 30 multi-point games, tied for the second most among defensemen in the NHL (San Jose’s Brent Burns: 35; San Jose’s Erik Karlsson: 30). Carlson’s 49 points (8g, 41a) rank fourth and his 25 primary assists rank second in the NHL among defensemen. Additionally, Carlson ranks fifth in the NHL in time on per game (25:25) and has been on the ice for 67 goals at five-on-five, the second most in the NHL (Toronto's Morgan Rielly: 70). Carlson is on pace for 71 points this season, which would surpass his single season high set last year (68 points, 15g, 53a). Should Carlson reach the 71 point mark, it would be the highest total by a Capitals defenseman since Mike Green’s 76 points (19g, 57a) in the 2009-10 season and tied for the seventh highest point total by a defenseman in franchise history.

Nice and Kuzy - Evgeny Kuznetsov has 13 multi-point efforts this season, good for the third most on the Capitals. Since 2014-15, Kuznetsov’s first full season with the Capitals, the 26-year-old forward has recorded 76 multi-point games, the third most on the Capitals during that span (Alex Ovechkin: 102; Backstrom: 93). Kuznetsov has recorded 53 points (15g, 38a) this season, and his 1.04 points per game rate ranks second on the Capitals (Ovechkin: 1.14). Over his last nine games, Kuznetsov has 14 points (6g, 8a). Despite missing six games due to injury earlier this season, Kuznetsov is on pace for 80 points, and he could reach the 80 point mark for the second time in his career (2017-18: 83 points). Kuznetsov’s 0.74 assists per game this season leads the team and is tied for 20th in the NHL among players with at least 40 games played. Among active players with at least 300 games played, Kuznetsov’s career 0.57 assists per game rate ranks 13th, and his 2.04 assists per 60 minutes of play is tied for fifth.

Osh-Babe - T.J. Oshie has 13 points (3g, 10a) in his last 12 games, including points in seven of his last 10 games (2g, 10a). Oshie has 16 goals this season, the third most on the Capitals and 203 goals in his career. Only 53 players have reached the 200 goal milestone since 2008-09, when Oshie made his NHL debut, and Oshie is tied for 43rd among active players during that span. Since joining the Capitals in 2015-16, Oshie has recorded 93 goals in 268 games to rank second on the Capitals (Alex Ovechkin: 170), which is tied for the 42nd most in the NHL during that span, and his 16.8 shooting percentage is fourth in the NHL among players with at least 200 games played. Oshie is three points shy of 500 career points and is aiming to become just the seventh player from the 2005 NHL Draft class to reach the 500 point mark and his 0.70 points per game rank tied for fourth among players selected in 2005.

Holtbeast - Braden Holtby stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced (.935 save percentage) in the Capitals’ 3-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Feb 12. Since the All-Star break, Holtby has stopped 150 of the 163 shots he’s faced (.920 save percentage). Since entering the NHL in 2010, Holtby's 244 wins are the fifth most in the NHL, despite having the lowest games played total among the top 15. Since 2010, Holtby is 19th in games played, however, his 103 losses (244-103-39) are the lowest among any goaltender with at least 300 games played (27 qualified goaltenders).

Shark Wranglers – Alex Ovechkin has registered 18 points (11g, 7a) in 19 career games against the Sharks and has earned 11 points in his last eight games against San Jose (6g, 5a), including a four-point game (3g, 1a) Jan. 22 at Capital One Arena. Nicklas Backstrom has earned 12 points (2g, 10a) in 15 career games against the Sharks and has tallied seven assists in his last eight games against San Jose. T.J. Oshie has earned 15 points (7g, 8a) in 27 career games against the Sharks.

Additional Capitals Notes Caps Valentines - Today marks the 15th time in franchise history the Capitals have played on Valentine's Day. They hold a 8-6-0-0 record overall and a 6-5-0-0 record on the road on Valentine's Day.

Wait One Minute - Through 56 games this season, Alex Ovechkin's time on ice per shift average is 1:00, the second highest in the NHL (Winnipeg's Dustin Byfuglien: 1:03). Should he maintain a one minute average throughout the rest of the regular season, it would be the fourth-highest rate of his career and the most since the 2009-10 season (1:06). Additionally, John Carlson (0:59) is tied for third in the NHL in time on ice per shift, Evgeny Kuznetsov (0:57) ranks fifth and Dmitry Orlov (0:56) is tied for seventh, making them the only four teammates in the NHL to rank in the top-10 in time on ice per shift so far this season.

Nisky Business - Matt Niskanen skated a team-high 22:57 against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, marking the third time he has led the Capitals in time on ice this season. Niskanen has recorded 22 points (8g, 14a) through 55 games this season and is on pace to record 32 points, which would be his highest point total since the 2016-17 season.

Rapid Fire - Dmitry Orlov's five shots led the Capitals against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Orlov's average shot on goal length was 43.0 feet on Tuesday and it marked the second time this season Orlov solely led the team in shots and the seventh time in his career that Orlov recorded at least five shots in a game.

Shoot Your Shot - The Capitals' team-wide 11.0 shooting percentage ranks fourth in the NHL this season. Washington has maintained an 10.98 shooting percentage on the road this season, the second-highest rate in the NHL.

Strong Second - The Capitals have scored 74 goals in the second period this year, the most in the NHL. Every Capital who has played in at least 36 games has recorded a goal in the second period, with Alex Ovechkin leading the team (18).
