Selena Gomez Says Acting Is Her “First Love” 37 TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2013 LIFESTYLE FEATURES Amy Adams: Acting with women creates ‘intimacy’ my Adams believes acting with women helps create “intimacy” because it gives Aoff a different vibe to working with men. Amy Adams says acting with women helps create “intimacy”. The 39-year-old actress plays Sydney Prosser in the forth- coming film ‘American Hustle’ and is forced to share an on-screen kiss with Jennifer Lawrence, but she admits she doesn’t mind because working with females creates a dif- ferent vibe to working with men. She told Britain’s Vanity Fair magazine: “I rarely get to work with other women. I got to act with Jennifer [Lawrence], and I thought, this is the most fun I have had in so long. Not because I don’t like acting with men, but because there’s an energy created when two young women go at each other or are able to cre- ate intimacy.” The star is remarkably generous when it comes to recommending other women who she thinks would be better suited to a position she is auditioning for. She explained: “I get excited for people when I know I should be competitive. I’d say in an audition: ‘I don’t think I’m right for this, but you know who you should get? ... I used to do that when I was an unemployed actress.” She mimics herself, adding: “Has Zooey Deschanel come in? Because she’d be fantastic ... Have you met Emily Blunt? Because she is really wonderful.” Knepper joins ‘The Hunger Games’: Mockingjay cast Ian McKellen nottired of Gandalf ir Ian McKellen insists he isn’t er felt like that. Not Your Mother’s Library Transcript Episode 11: Mamma Mia! and More Musicals (Brief intro music) Rachel: Hello, and welcome to Not Your Mother’s Library, a readers’ advisory podcast from the Oak Creek Public Library. I’m Rachel, and once again since Melody’s departure I am without a co-host. This is where you would stick a crying-face emoji. Luckily for everyone, though, today we have a brand new guest! This is most excellent, truly, because we are going to be talking about musicals, and I do not have any sort of expertise in that area. So, to balance the episode out with a more professional perspective, I would like to welcome to the podcast Oak Creek Library’s very own Technical Services Librarian! Would you like to introduce yourself? Joanne: Hello, everyone. I am a new guest! Hooray! (laughs) Rachel: Yeah! Joanne: So, I am the Technical Services Librarian here at the Oak Creek Library. My name is Joanne. I graduated from Carroll University with a degree in music, which was super helpful for libraries. Not so much. Rachel: (laughs) Joanne: And then went to UW-Milwaukee to get my masters in library science, and I’ve been working in public libraries ever since. I’ve always had a love of music since I've been in a child. My mom is actually a church organist, and so I think that’s where I get it from. Rachel: Wow, yeah. Joanne: I used to play piano—I did about 10 years and then quit. (laughs) So, I might be able to read some sheet music but probably not very well.

  • Young Americans to Emotional Rescue: Selected Meetings
YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

  • Rob Kardashian, His Then-Fiancée Blac Chyna and Their Pregnancy/Newborn Daughter, for One Season
The Neoliberal Life of the “Failing” Kardashian: Robert Kardashian On (Not) Keeping up with the Kardashians Leah Groenewoud (Third year, RLCT/GEND Major) GEND 3076 Dr. Wendy Peters April 5, 2015 Introduction Keeping up with the Kardashians (KUWTK) is a reality television show that follows the lives of the Kardashian family – a famous, upper-class Californian family consisting of Kris Jenner (the Kardashians’ mother and business manager), her (now ex-) husband Caitlyn Jenner and their children. Kris’ children include Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Robert Kardashian, and Kris and Caitlyn have two younger children, Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Rob & Chyna is a reality TV spin-off of KUWTK which followed Rob Kardashian, his then-fiancée Blac Chyna and their pregnancy/newborn daughter, for one season. This paper will employ a textual analysis of these two shows to analyze how Robert Kardashian’s life and life choices are portrayed as personal failures. Conversations and information about Rob – in the 12 episodes across 6 seasons of KUWTK, and 6 episodes of season 1 of Rob & Chyna which I studied – are consistently about how Rob must change, and that he is not happy or successful the way he is. Robert Kardashian is consistently portrayed as a failure, which this paper will clarify to mean a neoliberal failure. This paper will analyze the neoliberal logics of the narratives about Robert and the way he lives, including narratives about his health, his (lack of) independence and self-esteem, his marriageability and employability.i I will conclude with an analysis of how KUWTK and Rob & Chyna facilitate a ‘panoptic existence’ for Rob, in which his family, the viewers and even himself surveil and regulate Rob.

  • Ryan's Roses and Media Exposure Through the Lens of Cultivation
Colloquy Vol. 12, Fall 2016, pp. 39-51 Ryan’s Roses and Media Exposure through the Lens of Cultivation Wesley Hernandez Abstract This paper undertakes an extensive analysis of the Los Angeles radio program, Ryan’s Roses. Ryan’s Roses showcases adultery and toxic relationships in an entertaining fashion. Little research exists regarding the extent to which radio talk shows affect an individual’s engagement in romantic relationships. Studies from cultivation theory, media exposure, and radio were engaged to develop a framework for gauging negative behavioral effects in consistent listeners of the show. The subsequent analysis provides structural support for the claim that heavy listening exposure to Ryan’s Roses perpetuates distorted views of romantic relationships. Within the field of communication studies, research on cultivation effects has successfully been conducted in various parts of the world (Hetsroni & Tukachinsky, 2006). However, there exists very little research that examines the effects radio programs on people’s perception of romantic relationships. In this regard, a particular radio program that is worthwhile to explore is Ryan’s Roses. Hosted by internationally known celebrity Ryan Seacrest, Ryan’s Roses presents interpersonal conflicts among heterosexual couples whereby the girlfriend, or wife, believes that her romantic partner is secretly engaging in intimate behaviors with another woman (Seacrest, 2015). Given that a substantial amount of men commit adultery, the thematic aim of the show is to deceive, shame, and publicly embarrass such men on live radio. Ryan’s Roses follows a specific routine that consistently leads to the same dramatic conclusion, that is, a male individual having to explain his immoral and adulterating actions to his romantic partner.

  • Bea-Miller-One-Sheet-5.6.15.Pdf
In making her first full-length album, Bea Miller’s vision was clear. A singer/songwriter whose raspy vocals and sharp-edged pop have already earned her recognition as one of iTunes New Artist Spotlights for 2015, Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists You Need To Know”, as an MTV “Artist to Watch for 2015,” and as one of Billboard’s “10 Arists to Watch in 2015,” Bea’s main ambition was to create songs that spoke the sometimes-messy truth and helped others overcome their own hurt. “When I was younger, I never felt like I had a female artist who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, someone I could relate to and look up to,” says Bea. “Now that I’m making my own music, I want to be there for people so they can feel less alone in whatever they’re going through.” Recorded over the last year—with time out for an autumn 2014 tour with Demi Lovato—Not An Apology finds Bea fulfilling her mission by infusing her punk spirit into impassioned pop songs with a fiercely uplifting power. Featuring several tracks co-written by Bea (including her debut single “Young Blood,” a darkly charged anthem that hit the Billboard Hot 100 soon after its April 2014 release), Not An Apology mines her everyday experience for unapologetically honest lyrics about everything from bullying and backstabbers to isolation and breakup angst. “When you’re writing you have to get down to your deepest, darkest emotions, because that’s what makes a great song,” says Bea. “You need to be totally real and just put it all out there.” To capture the tension between toughness and vulnerability that propels much of Not An Apology, Bea teamed up with producers like busbee (P!nk, Kelly Clarkson), Jarrad Rogers (Icona Pop, Demi Lovato), Mike Del Rio (Kylie Minogue, Selena Gomez), and Matt Squire (Ariana Grande, Ke$ha) to craft a melody-fueled mix of gritty guitar riffs, fuzzed-out grooves, and awesomely heady beats.
