Celebrating Deafness Awareness Week First activity in Te Awamutu Hearing Associa- tion’s celebration of Deafness Awareness Week is a church service this Sunday. The Methodist Church in Bank Street has kindly agreed to incorporate deafness in its serv- ice at 10.30am. A group of people who have learned sign lan- guage through the Hearing Association will be signing to a hymn, during the service. More than 400,000 New Zealanders suffer some form of hearing loss ranging from mild to complete deafness, 390,000 are hearing impaired and in 250,000 of those, the loss qualifi es as a disability. This fi gure was established by Ann Greville PhD, in a study published in October 2001. At 10% of the population, hearing loss is probably the largest unseen disability in New Zealand. And this will grow for two reasons - hearing loss is often a by-product of the ageing process and will grow with the advance of the ‘baby boomer’ generation into old age, while at the other end of the scale, noise damage among the young is a growing problem. Overseas research suggests noise damage is prematurely ageing youth hearing. Hearing loss isn’t just an old person’s problem. Research released by the Royal National Insti- tute for the Deaf in England last year shows that 73% of people who regularly go night clubbing, often experience signs of hearing damage the next day. This includes ringing in the ears and /or dull- ness of hearing. Free hearing tests for adults will be offered on Friday, October 1 and Monday, October 4. A stall and display of assistive listening de- vices, such as telephones and hearing aid bat- tery testers etc., will be outside Paper Plus in Alexandra Street from 9.30am-3pm. People registering at the stall for hearing tests will be taken to the Hearing Association rooms for testing.
