Professor, Theological and Religious Studies, The University of Auckland, New Zealand [email protected] Received: 12/9/2020 Revised: 24/1/2021 Accepted: 13/4/2021 Abstract Purpose: This research aims to discuss the history of Islam in New Zealand, together with some of the pressing issues and challenges Muslims have encountered along the way. Looking back at the history of early Muslim settlers and the emergence of Muslim organizations and allied enterprises, it is clear that the Muslim community in New Zealand has had a rather mixed reception in a land that, on the whole, is perceived to be benignly tolerant and accepting. Methodology: The research is based on a critical analysis of the available literature, both contem- porary and historical. This paper explores complicated community developments, conversions to Islam, the violence experienced with defacement and destruction of mosques in reaction to overseas events over recent decades, ongoing Islamophobia, and the infamous 2019 terrorist attack on two mosques in the city of Christchurch. Findings: The research highlights the status of the New Zealand Muslim community and the extent and nature of their influence in the country. It constitutes a social hierarchy with a complex past and multiple internal issues. Accordingly, this paper concludes with a brief discussion of the migrant experience of Muslims. It also elucidates the necessity of further research in the future and emphasizes the need to study the culture, faith and history of New Zealand from various angles. -

China, New Zealand, and the Complexities of Globalization Asymmetry, Complementarity, and Competition Tim Beal and Kang Yuanfei Palgrave Macmillan, New York, 2016 Chapter 2: The Historical Legacy –Themes and Issues Tim Beal China has always been visible on the economic landscape of modern New Zealand, sometime quite prominently and at other times scarcely noticeable. Even when trade between the two countries was very small, suppressed by war or the post-1949 embargo, the potential was always there even if only recognized by a few visionaries such as Rewi Alley or Vic Percival. Moreover, the movement of people – Chinese gold diggers to New Zealand and later New Zealanders, often missionaries, to China – meant that there was always some awareness of China in New Zealand. On top of this, New Zealand as a product and part of Western expansion and imperialism, could scarcely be unaffected by the wider issues surrounding China. Two major interlocked themes become apparent as the historical narrative unfolds. Firstly, there has always been a tension between the Janus-like perception of China as Golden Fleece and as Yellow Peril, and this continues today. Secondly, partly a reflection of this, but with imperatives of its own, is the interplay between politics and economics. Politics may be on the grand scale, imperial policy emanating from London or Washington, or national; driven by concerns in Wellington or Beijing. On the other hand they may be very local – alarm about house prices in Auckland being perceived to being driven up by Chinese immigration – but politics provides a constant counterpoint to economic forces.1 ‘Economic’ may be considered to have many facets, from the technological – production, transportation, storage, communication, etc. -

Being Muslim in New Zealand A Critical Narrative Review of Research about the Experiences of being Muslim in New Zealand Colleen Ward1, Jaimee Stuart2 & Zeenah M. Adam1 1 Centre for Applied Cross-Cultural Research, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, 2 Griffith University, Australia. The paper reviews and integrates findings from our programme of research on acculturation and intercultural relations with, for and about members of New Zealand’s Muslim community. Our objectives are to act as a conduit for Muslim voices, sharing findings about their experiences, aspirations and challenges, while increasing overall awareness about diversity-receptiveness in New Zealand. We describe how New Zealand Muslims see themselves in terms of their religious, ethnic and national identities; the challenges they face, including coping with discrimination and cultural change; the resources they access, particularly religion, family and community; and their pathways to positive psychological and social outcomes. We also examine how New Zealanders perceive and receive Muslims in the wider community. A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music at The University of Waikato By Phillippa Ulenberg _____________ The University of Waikato 2009 Abstract The Community Arts Service (CAS, 1946-1966), founded after World War Two, took tours of music, drama, opera, dance and art exhibitions to smaller centres and isolated rural areas throughout New Zealand, fostering the cultural activities undertaken by local groups. From the Auckland University College, where it originated as a branch of Adult Education, it spread to the other University College provinces and, beyond New Zealand, to Australia. As Adult Education, CAS programmes emphasised educational value and aimed to develop the tastes and level of culture in the participating communities. The Service operated through local CAS committees, encouraging rural centres to take increasing responsibility for the cultural life of their own communities. -

By: Dr. Hamid Mirza Aghassi July 2010 The Allegation: The allegation is that Ayesha was six years old when she was legally engaged in a marriage contract with Mohammad who was beyond the age of fifty three when the marital obligation became a contractual obligation. Further, it is alleged that the marital bond and matrimonial contract had not been performed until three years pass the date of the contract when the bride became nine years of age. We need to have a scrutinized and analytical observation and study of the entire matter from all existing corners and logical angles to ascertain its factual and authentic conformity through an acceptable method of documentary and historical evaluations. During the following analysis, we will examine, evaluate, and adjudicate the authenticity and accuracy of this issue through historical, logical, practical, evidentiary, and legal instruments and considerations. On Authenticity of Allegations: The core and nucleus of this analytical research is based on the argument and claim that evidentiary instruments, provided to establish the age of the bride, appear to be lacking even the minimum required standards of genuineness and authentic originality. The following article is an attempt to dig out reality from the same history. As a way for defending the mis-narrations and misreports about the age of Ayesha, it has been claimed that marriage with the minors was a cultural and habitual practice within the Arabs at the time that Mohammad married Ayesha It has been further claimed that as an ongoing and practical tradition, it was quite normal and conventional for a nine year old girl to be married and her marriage be legally and lawfully consummated.
