Two new species of poorly known earth-boring beetles discovered from Maharashtra, India By Dr. Aparna Sureshchandra Kalawate Coleoptera is an insect order comprising of beetles and weevils and has economic and ecological importance. This order is the most speciose, including more than 3,89,487 extant species under 176 families worldwide (Zhang, 2013). There are about 22,334 species of beetles reported from India (Chandra et al. 2018). Out of these, there are 420 species of dung beetle placed in 38 genera in India (Mittal & Jain, 2015). Generally, when we speak about insects, an image of a disgusting creature comes to the mind of many of us. But, insects are an important component of our ecosystem. Many of them are pests on most economic crops, medicinal plants, and forest trees; some are important as they are used in Industries (Silk Industry, Apiculture, Lac culture, food industry, etc.), which helps pollinate plants. Also, they are a secondary source of food for birds, bats, etc. The present article deals with the discovery of two Dr. Aparna Sureshchandra Kalawate, while studying new species of earth-boring beetles from the unidentified collections of beetles housed at ZSI, Maharashtra, India. She did her Ph.D. in Agricultural Entomology from Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, Maharashtra, in Pesticide residues management under the supervision of Dr. M.D. Dethe. She is presently working on the taxonomy of Moths and Scarab beetles at Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Western Regional Centre (WRC), Pune. ZSI is a premier institute for taxonomy and systematics, and so she is involved in the inventory, taxonomy, and systematics of Moths and Scarab beetles of the Northern Western Ghats. Many moths and scarab beetles are cryptic in nature. It is challenging to identify them on the basis of morphological characters and hence integrated taxonomy comes to the aid. She has described three new moth species and two subspecies from the cryptic moth genus Olepa Watson, 1980 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Arctiinae) namely, Olepa zedesi Kalawate in Kalawate, Dinesh & Shabnam, 2020; Olepa ghatmatha Kalawate in Kalawate, Dinesh & Shabnam, 2020; Olepa suryamal Kalawate in Kalawate, Dinesh & Shabnam, 2020; Olepa suryamal rekhae Kalawate in Kalawate, Dinesh & Shabnam, 2020; Olepa schleini chandrai Kalawate in Kalawate, Pawara, Shabnam & Dinesh, 2020. She has recorded a new record of Olepa schleini Witt et al. 2005 a Palearctic species from the Satpura ranges of Maharashtra, India. The crypticity of this cryptic genus was solved with the description of morphological, genitalial and DNA barcode studies. She is working on the taxonomy and systematics of scarab beetles in beetles, commonly called dung beetles. She has described three beetle species new to science, namely, Bolboceras sahyadriense Kalawate and Hillert, 2018; Bolboceras bopdevense Kalawate and Hillert, 2021and Bolboceras trimbakense Kalawate and Hillert, 2021. Taxonomic studies are basic science and proper identification of any species, especially those species, major and minor pests on many economic crops. The above-said genus Olepa is a little pest on many crops like castor. With proper knowledge of the species, one can adequately utilise the management practises to control them without damaging the natural ecosystem of the crops. Before joining ZSI, she worked as a scientist in the Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute (IPIRTI), Bangalore, an Autonomous Institute under MOEF&CC, New Delhi, in Wood Preservation Division from 2008 to 2014. She has an Indian patent on “Wood preservatives and a method for protecting wood and wood- based panel products,” bearing Patent No. 297510. She has completed many in-house and sponsored projects from various agencies as PI of the project. During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. Later, Olepa was divided in two species-groups (ORHANT 2000). The ricini group is characterised by a narrow uncus and valvae, which usually are pointed at the tip, whereas the valvae of the ocellifera group have a rounded apex and an additional sub-apical finger-shaped extension, and a broad hood-shaped un- cus.

Koderma is Jalil Ahmad unexplored as far as its floral and faunal composition is concerned. The information is based on four Zoological Survey of India, surveys conducted in July 2012, August 2013, September 2014 and October 2015. A total of 140 species Gangetic Plains Regional Centre, under 106 genera of moths are reported from Koderma. Out of which, 32 species are reported for the first Sector-8, Bahadurpur Housing time from Jharkhand. Family Erebidae dominated among all the 17 families in diversity as well as in Colony, Patna, Bihar, India abundance. Koderma lies between 24015.46 & 2404918 N latitude and 8502601 & 8505416 east longitude with an average altitude of 397m above the sea level. It covers an area of about 1500.00 sq kms [1].

The moths were Department of Wildlife Sciences, captured by light trapping as well as by opportunistic sighting across 37 sites in the district for a period of Gauhati University, Assam, three years from 2013-2016. Identification was based on material and visual examination of the samples India with relevant literature and online databases. The list includes the family, subfamily, tribes, scientific name, the author and year of publication of description for each identified species. 60 species in this Rubul Tanti inventory remain confirmed up to genus. Naturalists for convenience categorised moths into two informal groups, the macro moths having larger physical size and recency in evolution and micro moths [4] that are smaller in size and primitive in origin .

Abstract We present here the checklist of moths (Lepidoptera: Heterocera) for the campus of Savitribai Phule Pune University, situated in the metropolis of Pune in the state Maharashra in India. We report identi/ication of 189 unique genera along with 154 unique species. Despite the relative small size of the observation area and the location being at the heart of a busy metropolis, the moths were found to be of diverse variety, with 26 different families and 76 tribes. The identifications of the species was crowd-sourced via iNaturalist.org. An automated program was developed to fetch the identi/ication and generate the list.
