In 1948 he married the Australian actress June Browne. Postwar, he worked as a freelance photographer producing fashion shoots and work for magazines such as ‘Playboy’. In 1961 he settled in Paris, where his career as a fashion photographer flourished. It was in Paris that his own particular style developed. Original Remarque Artist’s Proof of “The Opening of the First Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia in the Exhibition Building, Melbourne”. Issued in only 250 copies fully signed “Tom Roberts” and the guarantee stamp of the Print Sellers Association of London. Produced in 1902 at a price of 20 guineas, the print, on parchment, is an accurate depiction of Roberts’ “Big Picture” (as it was called), measuring 116 x 86.5 cm. including margins. Roberts had been commissioned to paint the work commemorating the occasion, but the commission stipulated “correct representations of the Duke and Duchess of York (later His Majesty King George V), the Governor- General, the state governors, members of the Federal Parliament, and other distinguished guests ... to the number of not less than 250”. The oil canvas itself finally measured 304.5 x 509.2 cm. It was completed by Roberts in London in 1903 and presented to the Duke of Cornwall and York, who had attended the ceremony in Melbourne in May 1901. In 1958, the King’s great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth returned the painting to Australia on permanent loan. The print here offered belonged to Sir Robert Garran (1867-1957), one of the dignitaries in the print (No. 229 in the Key of those present, standing just in front of the Duke

34 of York), and had hung above Garran’s desk, which was purchased by the Attorney-General’s Department after his death. Slight non-disturbing toning on the print, but fine.
