It is one of the several contiguous lakes, and developed over the last few centuries in and around the famous Udaipur city. The lakes around Udaipur were primarily created by building dams to meet the drinking water and irrigation needs of the city and its neighborhood. Two islands, Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir are located within Pichola Lake, and have been developed with several palaces to provide views of the lake. UDAIPUR CITY PALACE City Palace, Udaipur is a palace complex situated in the city of Udaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It was built over a period of nearly 400 years, with contributions from several rulers of the Mewar dynasty. Its construction began in 1553, started by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia Rajput family as he shifted his capital from the erstwhile Chittor to the new found city of Udaipur. The palace is located on the east bank of Lake Pichola and has several palaces built within its complex. The City Palace in Udaipur was built in a flamboyant style and is considered the largest of its type in the state of Rajasthan. It was built atop a hill, in a fusion of the Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles, providing a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. Overlooking Lake Pichola, several historic monuments like the Lake Palace, Jag Mandir, Jagdish Temple, Monsoon Palace, and Neemach Mata temple, are all in the vicinity of the palace complex. Nestled within the Aravali mountain range, these landmarks are associated in popular culture with the filming of the 1983 James Bond movie Octopussy. UDAIPUR JAGDISH TEMPLE Jagdish Temple is a large Hindu temple in the middle of Udaipur in Rajasthan, just outside the royal palace. It has been in continuous worship since 1651. A big tourist attraction, the temple was originally called the temple of Jagannath Rai but is now called Jagdish-ji. It is a major monument in Udaipur. UDAIPUR SAHELIYO KI BARI Saheliyon Ki Bari was laid for a group of forty-eight maidens. This garden is located on the banks of the Fateh Sagar Lake, presenting a green retreat in the dry lands of Rajasthan. It was built from 1710 to 1734 by Maharana Sangram Singh for the royal ladies. As per legend, the garden was designed by the king himself and he presented this garden to his queen. The queen was accompanied by 48 maids in her marriage. To offer all of them pleasurable moments away from the political intrigues of the court, this garden was made. This patterned garden used to be the popular relaxing spot of the royal ladies. The queen with her maids and female companions used to come here for a stroll and spend their time in leisure UDAIPUR FATEH SAGAR LAKE Fateh Sagar Lake is situated in the city of Udaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is an artificial lake named after Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur and Mewar, constructed north-west of Udaipur, to the north of Lake Pichola in the 1680s UDAIPUR KARNIKA MATA MANDIR Karni Mata Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Karni Mata at Deshnoke, 30 km from Bikaner, in Rajasthan, India. It is also known as the Temple of Rats. The temple is famous for the approximately 25,000 black rats that live, and are revered, in the temple. These holy rats are called kabbas, and many people travel great distances to pay their respects. The temple draws visitors from across the country for blessings, as well as curious tourists from around the world.     Historical Jag Mandir Of Udaipur by traveldesk Mandir lies towards the south of the lake and was completed by Maharana Jagat Singh I (reigned 1628-1652). However, the palace was developed by Rana Karan Singh (1620-28). This palace has quite a historical significance; it has a structure that had been built to give shelter to Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan) in 1626 when he was about to revolt against his father, emperor Jahangir. The Rana of Udaipur, Rana Karan Singh first gave him refuge in his City Palace. However, the Prince and his entourage were shifted to the island palace on lake Pichola when his nobles failed to respect Rajput customs. Most interestingly it was Khurram who had led the Mughal army in 1614 that had defeated Rana Amar Singh, the father of his host. Prince Karan was asked to act as an emissary to the Mughal court, and it was during this time that the Sisodias and the Mughals developed a friendship. Rana Karan Singh treated his royal guest with much courtesy and built the Mughal Prince a domed pavilion upon the island. He crowned the pavilion by the Muslim crescent and lavishly decorated its interiors. The Rana had a throne built from a single block of serpentine for his revered guest and also a mosque built for the prayers of the Mughal Prince and his followers. It is believed that the pietra dura work on the interior of the palace later inspired Khurram for the detailing of the Taj Mahal. The sandstone palace with its inlaid designs in onyx, jasper and agate had been a major influence when he built his palaces in Delhi and Agra.

Intimate collaboration between geographer and demographer began quite early in the modern era, almost two centuries before the first experiments in a permanent decennial Census were made in the 1850's. For example, the population estimates of Fort St. George, Madras, made in 1639 and 1648, and of Masulipatnam and Bombay by Dr. John Fryer, around 1672-73 were supported by cartographic documents of no mean order, Tbe first detailed modern maps, the results of Major James Rennell's stupendous Survey of 1767-74, were published in 1778-1780 and Henry Taylor Colebrooke, almost our first systematic demographer, was quick to make good use of them by making estimates of population in the East India Company's Possessions in the 1780's. Upjohn's map of Calcutta City, drawn in 1792.93, reprinted in the Census Report of Calcutta for 195 I, gives an idea of the standards of cartographic excellence reached at that period. In the first decade of the nineteenth century, Francis Buchanan Hamilton improved upon Colebrooke's method in which he was undoubtedly helped by the improved maps prepared for the areas he surve ed. It is possible that the Great Revenue Survey, begun in the middle of the last century, offered the best guarantee of the success of decennial population censuses proposed shortly before the Mutiny of 1857.

    European Journal of Sustainable Development (2016), 5, 4, 129-140 ISSN: 2239-5938 Doi: 10.14207/ejsd.2016.v5n4p129 Conserving Water & Biodiversity: Traditions of Sacred Groves in India Mala Agarwal1 Abstract Sacred groves, a wide spread phenomenon in cultures across the world, are often associated with religion & culture, are instrumental in preserving biodiversity and nature without being questioned. Scattered all over India e.g. scrub forests in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan maintained by the Bishnois, Hariyali in Uttarakhand, Shinpin in Himachal Pradesh and associated with religion they are often sacrosanct. The sacred groves are self sustained ecosystem and conserve the endemic, endangered & threatened species, medicinal plants and wide variety of cultivars. Water and soil conservation is the most well documented ecological service provided by the sacred groves that helps prevent flash floods and ensures supply of water in lean season in the desert of Rajasthan. Encountering threats like fragmentation, urbanization, and overexploitation now they need governmental support to exist e.g. Introduction of the ‘Protected Area Category Community Reserves’ under the Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Act, 2002. Introduction Sacred Groves are considered as “Sacred Natural Sites” (IUCN) [1].These are the relic forest patches preserved in the name of religion & culture. They extend from Asia, Africa, and Europe to America mostly in Africa and Asia [2]. In India, Groves are present from North-east Himalayan region, Western & Eastern Ghats, Coastal region, Central Indian Plateau and Western desert [3]. Indian sacred groves have pre-Vedic origin. They are associated with indigenous / tribal communities who believe in divinity of nature and natural resources.
