Tiernan Good afternoon, everyone, & welcome to the High Road for today’s first home game of the new Pitching In Isthmian League South Central Division season with Westfield We extend an especially warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters from Westfield, who have made the trip to be here, probably around the tricky M25, as well as to the referee & assistants – we hope you all have a pleasant time here today & a safe journey home afterwards This is your complimentary e-programme for the game - tickets have been on sale via the shop tab on our website, www.chipsteadfc.com priced at £10 for adults, £7 for over-65s, £5 for students aged 16-18 & £3 for children aged 5-16 - they will also be on sale at the turnstile, payable by card only (no cash here these days or at the bar - sorry!), but please endeavour to buy online in advance & have the EvePass app, as several clubs now use, on your phone or tablet for ease of access + track & trace purposes Likewise, last season, as you entered the ground, you’d have been invited to take part in our 50/50 club draw, with the prize announced at halftime, but in the present climate, avoiding the handling of cash & keeping close contact to a minimum, we have not yet restarted the scheme, but we trust you’ll have a drink in our socially-distanced bar instead, before or after the game or at half-time, or there’s always our Muddy Boot for refreshments on the halfway line instead Last season, we lost 2-0 away early on in August 2019, but managed to win 1-0 away in the FA Cup, with Callum Hope scoring the only goal – we were due to play them at home on 11th April this year, but we all know what had happened by then! If you didn’t manage to attend Tuesday’s late win in the FA Cup over Deal Town, my last message to you was way back on 10th March, before we lost 2-0 to Ashford Town (Middlesex), but the lads battled well, creating early chances, seeing Oliver Pain save another penalty, us conceding the 1st goal, before sub Callum McAllister rose to head home the equaliser 3 minutes from time, so penalties followed – credit goes to Karn Miller-Neave, Jensen Grant, Sam Bell & David Graves who all converted their spot-kicks, while Deal hit the bar & Ollie saved another one, to ensure we progress to the 2nd Qualifying Round, where we will host East Grinstead on Saturday 3rd October 3pm – ticket details will be on the website very soon Unfortunately, before Tuesday’s cup win, after a promising campaign of friendlies, Saturday’s first game of the new league season didn’t quite go to plan, as we were disappointingly beaten 2-0 at Bracknell, so we will be looking for the win today, boosted by the one-month loan signings of Jack Dickson & George Membrillera from Dorking Wanderers – welcome to you both! After today, the FA Cup tie is our next 1st team match, before a tricky midweek trip to Harlow Town in the league on Tuesday 6th October KO 7.45pm & our next home league game v. Bedfont Sports on Saturday 10th Our under-18s started their new season with a home friendly win 5-1 v. East Grinstead, then a 1-1 draw here with Sutton Common Rovers, before going to Billingshurst in the FA Youth Cup & recording a great 7-0 win (with Cameron Dobell 2, Kilae Crockwell, Braiden Hall 3 & Jaiden Drakes-Thomas on target) – they only went & repeated that scoreline at home to Burgess Hill in the next round on Wednesday (with Tyler-Jayden Falzon 2, Cameron Dobell, Ollie Hamstead, Braiden Hall 2 & Alex Neal netting this time), which must be a fairly-unprecedented stat. – they will now host Met Police in the next round, date TBC, but will probably be wef 5th October, which will be tougher, but they first start their Isthmian Youth League Central Division campaign at home to Dorking Wanderers on Monday 28th September KO also 7.30pm But please don’t forget to keep an eye out for all the very latest news at Chipstead FC, including any last minute fixture changes, via our website www.chipsteadfc.com , our Facebook group Chipstead FC (Surrey) 1906 & our Twitter feed @chipsteadfcsurr Please also try to make it to some or all of the fixtures mentioned above & cheer on the lads – I know they really would appreciate your support Don’t forget our rolling 100 club scheme, which you can join at any time, so please see me or message me as below for more details about this important club fundraiser at any time The new website & this e-programme concept are still very much works in progress, but I’d welcome any constructive feedback via my e-mail address below All that remains is for me to say is ‘Enjoy today’s game, folks – come on you Chips!’ Trevor S – [email protected]

A VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT – MANAGER ROB KEMBER

Good afternoon, I’d like to welcome everyone back to High Road for our first home league game of the season and also our visitors for the day Westfield who started their campaign off with a convincing 3-0 win, so I’m sure we will be in for a tough test today.

These are my first notes after what has been a long and strange pre-season under the current circumstances with Covid-19. Thankfully we have been fortunate enough to have retained the majority of last year’s squad, as I feel stability is vitally important when trying to build and move forward, and I myself was keen to keep the bulk of last season’s squad together. On top of that, we have added some new faces into the squad - Jack Beadle joins us from Uxbridge, who I’ve been really pleased with over pre-season, in his performances and the way he has settled into our squad. We also welcome back David Graves, former captain and player of the year, and it’s like he’s never been away! Further additions include Luke Miller (brother of Aaron) from Glebe, Ryan David from Molesey, Marco Correia from Leatherhead and TJ Nkoma from Westfield, all of whom have proven over pre-season to be good acquisitions, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they can progress with us over the course of the season. Finally, on the recruitment front, we have taken on an initial month’s loan James Dickson (midfield) and George Membrillera (striker) from Dorking Wanderers, both of whom have featured for Dorking Wanderers’ first team this pre-season.

Our first competitive fixture was a tough test away at Ramsgate in the FA Cup, and it was clear from various media platforms, that they as a club have strengthened over the summer and are looking to kick on, both on and off the field. You can never quite tell how the first fixture after pre-season is likely to go, so to produce the level of performance which we did, and walk away 3-0 winners was extremely pleasing. Following on from that was another tough away fixture to Bracknell Town, who for most people are this year’s league favourites. We eventually went down 2-0 with goals at the end of either half. I personally felt though that we didn’t do ourselves justice, and performed below our par and the standard we had set in the previous game at Ramsgate. On reflection it’s definitely a game, which we could have got something from. We were again back in action in the FA Cup last Tuesday, and were given a scare, and taken to penalties by Deal Town. A frustrating evening for the Management to say the least! After being so dominant in the first half and not taking chances, we were almost punished following a poor second half display. That said, the lads stuck at it, and managed to get us out of jail and into the hat for the next round, showing spirit and character that I hope will serve us well for the rest of the season.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHIPSTEAD FC

Chipstead Football Club was formed in 1906, when the Netherne was being built, and the building workers and the lads in Chipstead challenged each other to a match. The oldest club records dated 1911 show a far from healthy position, survival relying mainly on the proceeds of whist drives. The club’s health began to improve and, in 1920, it even had its own transport for away games, an open topped lorry owned by a local builder. Up until the 1962/63 season, Chipstead played junior football, but, having finished runners-up in the County Junior Cup the previous year, they then moved into the Surrey Intermediate League

The club played at this standard until 1982, when they became founder members of the Surrey Premier League. The next four years saw the club have great success finishing runners-up three times and also winning the League Cup on three occasions. During this period they were also beaten finalists in the County Premier Cup. The reserves also met with success being runners-up once and also winning the League Cup. After a long battle, the club were awarded senior status in 1986 and were promoted to the Combined Counties League, where once again success followed; a League Championship was gained in 1989/90 and a runners-up spot was gained on two occasions, with six League Cup Final appearances, with Chipstead being victorious in four

Season 1987/88 saw the club make its debut in the F.A. Vase and the following year in the F.A. Cup. Over recent years the club has continued to grow and strengthen its youth policy with some 200 players between the ages of six and eighteen involved every week. Two former Chipstead youth players - Leon McKenzie and Steven Sidwell moved on to professional clubs, &, more recently, Saidou Khan played for our 1st team, & is now with Maidstone Utd. The Combined Counties Championship winning squad contained no fewer than 12 players, who had represented the club at youth level

In 1998 Chipstead was able to purchase the freehold of the ground from the Local Authority. Thanks to a grant from the F.A. in 2001, the club was able to purchase additional land, which was developed into mini-soccer pitches to further enhance its youth policy. More recently in November 2004 a 100-seater stand was installed, which was increased to 150 in March 2007. In May 2006 a covered standing area for 150 people was also erected

2006-07 was the club’s ‘Centenary’ season, and the hope was that it would be a memorable one. On the opening day of the season, the team won their first game and went top of the table; come February, and still top, the decision was made to do the necessary work to achieve the ground upgrading. The next six weeks saw the ground transformed thanks to the incredible hard work of the committee and supporters. The team remained top and promotion to the Ryman League was achieved for the first time in 100 years

In the 2007-08 season Chipstead established themselves in the Ryman League finishing a creditable 15th. They also went on to win the Southern Combination Cup beating Ryman Premier side Ashford Town (Middlesex) in the final

In 2008-09 Chipstead struggled in the league, but, in the FA Cup, reached the 4th qualifying round for the first time in their history, eventually losing at Torquay United. 2010-11 saw Chipstead finished 10th being their highest position ever

2012-13 was a poor season for the club with no fewer than 4 managers - Mark Tompkins left the club after just one game; assistant Mick Read stepped in as temporary manager for a month, before the club appointed John Hamsher. Things seemed fine until January, when results took a dip. John decided to step down in early April, with vice-chairman Mick Ford taking over the reins for the final 3 matches

In 2013-14 Chipstead started the season with a new management team - Kevin Rayner, with Roly Martin as his assistant, and Mark Elgar as technical assistant. From August until the end of October 7 games out of 21 were won in all competitions, including losing both F.A. Trophy & F.A. Cup matches within eight days. Geoff Corner stepped aside as Chairman, with Mick Ford taking up the position. Mick's first task was to appoint a new manager in Steve Baker. A mid-table finish of 13th was a great turnaround for the club. Steve left the club in 2014-15, and was replaced by Simon Colbran

Following a poor start to the 2015/16 season, Simon resigned, and was replaced by Lyndon Buckwell. Unable to turn things around, Lyndon was himself replaced by Craig Tanner, well known to Tooting & Mitcham folk, who, with Adam Moriarty, ultimately managed to save the club from relegation with a few games to spare. Craig & Adam then left the club during the summer

2016-17 saw the return of ex-Chipstead player Antony Williams to manage the 1st team along with his assistants, two of whom had played for the club in the past. Having former club players in management gave everyone at the club a lift, and they quickly got to work, and comfortably avoided relegation. They laid the foundations for the 2017-18 season, & remain at the same level to this day, although the powers that be put the club in the Bostik League South Central Division for 2018/19

This provided many new clubs in opposition, yet Chipstead held their own in the division, although Antony decided to step aside, as the season drew to a close – his two coaches, Rob Kember & Rob Smith stepped forward to take up the mantle & lead the club into the 2019/20 season in the newly-named BetVictor Isthmian League South Central Division – the club was doing well, although their last game on 10th March ended up in a 2-0 defeat to Ashford Town, but there was still a chance of reaching the playoffs, but then COVID struck…

What will 2020/21 hold in store, as we belatedly start?

From the start the club had success in the competitions which it entered. Among the trophies won in the early years were the Surrey Youth Invitation Cup in 1953/54, the Surrey Junior Charity Cup in 1954/55 and 1955/56, the Surrey Junior Cup (at the first attempt) in 1955/56 and the Surrey Youth Cup in 1956/57.

Following several seasons in local league football, the club made the break into Surrey Intermediate football using the present ground at Woking Park, Kingfield. Successes soon came and, after becoming League Champions and Cup winners on several occasions in the subsequent seasons, the Club decided to apply for senior status. The application was accepted in 1964 and, after one season in the Parthenon League, Westfield met the necessary ground grading requirements and joined the Surrey Senior League

Westfield’s future success in senior football sprang from their ability to attract the best local youngsters, and they were successful in winning the Surrey Youth Cup again in 1966/67 and 1969/70, and the Surrey Youth Shield in 1969/70 and 1970/71. This talent matured and there followed three tremendous seasons for the senior side, when they won the Surrey Senior League Cup in 1971/72, followed by the League and Cup double in 1972/73, and the League Championship again in 1973/74

The Surrey Senior League was disbanded and reformed as the Combined Counties Football League in 1978, and Westfield FC became founder members retaining membership until 2018

Success, however, was more difficult to achieve, and, in recent times, the closest the senior team came to honours was in 1989/90, when they lost the final of the Combined Counties League Cup to Hartley Wintney in extra time.

Westfield’s youth team won the Surrey Youth League’s U18 Division Cup in 1978.

During the early 2000s, with former Woking player John Cassidy as manager, the senior side improved their league position, finishing sixth in season 2000/01. That season saw the Club enter the FA Vase again, having only previously entered in 1974 for 3 seasons, performing beyond expectations before losing in the Fourth Round to Ryman League Arlesey Town, on the way beating Wantage Town, Sidley United, Lewes and Bowers United

Season 2002/03 saw Westfield enter the FA Cup for the first time, losing at home to Dorking in the Preliminary Round.

Westfield continued to compete at youth level, and they won the Combined Counties Youth League Cup in 1991/92, as well as being runners-up in the League.

Following the installation of floodlights in 1998, the U18 team joined the Southern Youth Floodlight League as members of the Western Division. The club also ran a youth team playing in the West Surrey Boys League, winning the U14 Challenge Cup and Premier Division in 1999/00, the U15 Premier Division, Challenge Cup and Surrey County Cup in 2000/01, U15 Division 2 in 2002, the U16 Premier Division in 2001/02, and the U15 Division 2 in 2002/03

Following the end of the 2003/04 season, Westfield lost both First and Reserve Team managers. John Cassidy moved to Frimley Green, and thereafter back to Farnham Town, and Graham Pope moved to Godalming & Guildford to manage their reserve team in the Suburban league. Westfield recruited Paul Donaghy from Guildford-based Merrow as first-team manager, and Dave Robson, a long-time Westfield player, took over the reserves

At the end of 2005/06 Westfield were relegated to the 1st Division, due to new ground-grading regulations after a very acrimonious conflict with the league. Numerous commitments from league officials were reneged upon, and, after months of appeals and meetings, Westfield had to accept their unwelcome fate. After a mid-table Division 1 season and partly because of the league-enforced relegation, manager Paul Donaghy decided to resign as First Team manager to join Godalming, and Reserve Team manager Dave Robson also quit. The team of ex-player Martin Powell, ex-Spurs stalwart David Howells and coach John Comer took over the running of the senior teams for the start of the 2007/08 season

In the close season of 2007/08, following a highly creditable 4th place finish, Martin resigned as manager due to personal circumstances; his departure signalled the exits of both David Howells and John Comer too. In July 2008 the position of 1st Team Manager was filled by Steve Plunkett, the ex-Godalming Town Reserves boss, although he was replaced within 4 months by the returning Dave Robson, as the club attempted to rebuild following a mass exodus of players.

Dave Robson did a fine job stabilising the club, but, after an indifferent 2009/10, was replaced by joint managers, Craig Moore and John Comer.

Off the pitch there was good news, as building of the new facilities commenced in 2010/11, and it promised to be a good season, as the management duo assembled the best squad since the 2008 season. However, despite some wonderful results, the team struggled to find consistency, and finished a disappointing 13th in the table. There was better news for the reserves, who finished 4th in the reserve league, and reached the final of the league cup, where they went down to double-winning side Mole Valley SCR

During the summer of 2011, Craig Moore decided to step down to concentrate on playing, leaving John Comer as sole manager. He promoted Kevin Bailey from the reserves to be his assistant, and, following Dave Kelly’s resignation as reserve team manager, appointed David Robertson

In May 2011 the old pitch was dug up and raised a metre, before being re-seeded, and in June the old clubhouse was demolished. The club moved into the new facilities in August 2011 with a thrilling opening match in the FA Cup against Peacehaven & Telscombe, in which the Sussex side eventually ran out 6-3 winners in front of a crowd of 190. The following month a new record attendance for a league fixture at Woking Park was set, when 325 witnessed the fixture against Guernsey. The season saw another improvement on the pitch, where a position of 8th was achieved, and the team reached a cup final for the first time in nearly 20 years. However they went down 4-2 to Warlingham on the day. The following season the club gained promotion in third place, and played Walton Casuals Reserves in the final of the Surrey Premier Cup, going down 2-1 in a close game

In season 2013/14, with John Comer continuing as manager, the club had their best league finish since 1981, ending in fourth place

With John Comer’s departure, Martin Beard was appointed for the 2014-15 season. After a run of indifferent results, Martin was replaced by Dan Snare, who improved the side to finish mid-table

For the 2016-17 season, Tony Reid was appointed manager, and enjoyed a stunning season, finishing second in the League behind Hartley Wintney, and winning the League Cup in May. The following season the club continued to play exciting, attacking football, scoring an amazing 145 goals, whilst conceding only 45, and became deserved Champions with a fantastic 106 league points

As the 2018-19 season began, we said farewell to the Combined Counties League after 40 years of continuous competition, and started an exciting journey into Step 4 of non-league football

Having lost some key players from the previous campaign, it took several months for Tony Reid to find a settled side, but then, after Christmas, a wonderful run of 13 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats saw Westfield finish in fifth place, to gain a play-off place and our highest-ever league finish. A close semi-final play-off defeat to Bracknell Town did little to detract from a remarkable achievement

2019-20 saw Tony's team again keep up the pressure at the top of the table, and were lying in a playoff position before the season was curtailed by Covid-19 cancellations, leading to the whole Isthmian League being declared null and void with 28 out of 38 league games played. By that time, the manager had decided to look for a new challenge, and unfortunately many of our long-standing players took the same decision. It was a disappointing end to a great few years

Into the fray for season 2020-21 steps new manager Simon Lane, who has the not-inconsiderable task of building a team almost from scratch, and we wish him well in trying to sustain our previous good record at this level
