INDONESIA URBAN WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE West Java, DKI Jakarta, Banten

Indonesia Urban Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (IUWASH) is a United States Agency for International Development (USAID)- funded project. IUWASH aims to develop access to water and sanitation services for communities, including low- income people in urban areas of Indonesia.

In West Java, DKI Jakarta, Banten, IUWASH works in eleven districts/cities: Bandung District, Bekasi District, Karawang District, Purwakarta District, Bekasi City, Bogor City, DKI Jakarta, Lebak District, Serang District, Tangerang District and Tangerang Selatan City. IUWASH No days is passed without water: Everywhere in Indonesia, communities in urban and rural areas still use wells as source of clean and drinking water for many purposes.

DKI Jakarta: Sanitation system only reached 2 percent of the population City-scale sewerage and wastewater treatment managed by Regional Wastewater Management Company (PD PAL Jaya) only reached 2 percent of the population. The majority of Jakarta population relies on individual sewage system such as pit latrines or septic tank. However, 46 percent of that system does not follow technical standards (Mercy Corps, 2007). DKI Jakarta has the largest Provincial Government Budget compared to other provinces, but investment priority in drinking water and sanitation remains a huge challenge. Although service coverage of drinking water through pipe connection is at 61.8 percent, the Water Utility of DKI Jakarta still face difficulties in increasing access to drinking water for low-income community. At present, IUWASH works with Regional Wastewater Management Company and PT. Palyja (a private water utility) to

West Java & Banten: Non-renewable Water 11%-47% and 60% inadequate septic tanks Water utilities in West Java and Banten could only serve eight until 60 percent of population, while their non-renewable water rate is at 11 until 47 percent. In Bogor city, World Bank loan enabled Bogor Water Utility to install 9,000 new household connections annually from 2013 to 2019. In sanitation sector, city-wide piped sewerage system is only available in big cities such as Bandung and Bogor. Other cities still rely on individual septic tanks and 60 percent of that system is inadequate (World Bank Study, 2008).
