  • Från Månskensrinkar Till SHL
Från månskensrinkar till SHL Professionalisering och kommersialisering i Svenska Ishockeyförbundets tryckalster 1956-2016 Johan Ling Idrottsvetenskapligt examensarbete (2IV31E) 15 högskolepoäng Datum: 2016-11-08 Handledare: Tobias Stark Examinator: Owe Stråhlman Abstract Title: From moonlight rinks to SHL. Professionalization and commercialization in Swedish ice hockey during the period 1956-2016. The goal of this paper is to highlight the importance of money in the sport of ice hockey. The primary purpose is to investigate the perception of the commercialization of Swedish ice hockey, as expressed by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association (SIF). The two key themes are “the sport as a profession” and “the financial position of the SIF and the clubs”. Question formulations: How is the professionalization and commercialization of ice hockey perceived? Is it a positive or negative development? What causes and actors are believed to be behind these trends? How has the debate concerning ice hockey as business evolved over time? The methodology of this paper is based on hermeneutic principles, where hermeneutics can be regarded as the doctrine of interpretation. The theoretic starting point is Kalevi Henilä´s Totalization Theory, in which the development of ice hockey is explained on the basis of the competitive spiral, the increased value of success and the totalization of the sport. The findings confirm earlier research on the topic – that the main focus of ice hockey is busi- ness; that it is a question of “next changeover”, “next game”. Individual clubs cannot make a case for long-term planning, which may lead to increased differences between clubs regard- ing finances and other resources.
