TEAM NOTES:

KAPANEN JOINS PRACTICE The Penguins got some good news on Monday, as newly-acquired Kasperi Kapanen joined the team for practice after completing his COVID testing protocol, which caused him to miss all of training camp and the first three games of the season.

Kapanen skated on Sidney Crosby’s wing and is looking to make his Penguins debut. Originally drafted by Pittsburgh in the first round (22nd overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft, Kapanen spent the first 202 games of his career with the . The speedy winger has finished the 2019-20 campaign with 36 points (13G-23A) and a team-best two shorthanded goals in 69 games, and has recorded back-to-back 30-point seasons.

CASEY IN THE NET Goaltender Casey DeSmith was sharp against Washington on Sunday, helping the Penguins to their first win of the year. The win was DeSmith’s first in the NHL since March 14, 2019, a 5-0 win in Buffalo where he turned aside all 26 shots he faced.

DeSmith has historically played his best hockey at PPG Paints Arena, as he has a 16-6-2 record, 2.48 goals-against average and .924 save percentage in his career at home.

A RIVALRY OF GENERATIONAL TALENTS The 2020-21 season marks the 16th season that generational talents Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin face off. The two have taken part in 53 head- to-head matchups, where Crosby and the Penguins have gone 32-19-2 against Ovechkin and the Capitals. Below are their stats when facing each other in the regular season:

Player GP G A PTS Sidney Crosby 53 26 48 74 Alex Ovechkin 53 31 22 53

Not only is the Crosby/Ovechkin rivalry one of the NHL’s best, but it’s also one of the league’s longest-standing rivalries. Crosby and Ovechkin are two of just eight players in the NHL to play for the same team since the beginning of the 2005-06 season along with (BOS), Dustin Brown (LAK), (ANA), (CGY), (CHI) and (CHI). Only Bergeron and Brown played for their current teams prior to the ‘05-06 season.

WASHINGTON WHIPPERS Penguins Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have consistently produced points throughout their careers against the Capitals. Despite not playing in the same division as Washington until 2013-14, the duo ranks first (tied) and third, respectively, in points versus the Capitals among all active players:

Player GP G A PTS PTS/GM Sidney Crosby 53 26 48 74 1.40 80 30 44 74 .93 Evgeni Malkin 48 21 46 67 1.40 48 17 33 50 1.04 45 22 23 45 1.00

No active players have more assists against Washington than Crosby (48) and Malkin (46), and they are also two of just five current players to score 20 or more goals versus the Capitals.

HOME COOKIN’ The Penguins were one of the better teams at home during the 2019-20 campaign, finishing tied for second in the NHL with 23 wins in 35 games. The team also finished in the top-5 in home points percentage (.714, 4th) and goals per game (3.46, 5th). Below is a list of Pittsburgh’s home point leaders last season:

Player GP G A PTS Evgeni Malkin 26 15 22 37 Bryan Rust 27 16 20 36 Sidney Crosby 21 10 25 35 Jake Guentzel 22 13 15 28 Kris Letang 31 8 15 23

Sidney Crosby’s 1.67 points-per-game average at home was tops in the NHL, while Evgeni Malkin’s 1.42 points-per-game average was seventh-best.

MALKIN CLOSING IN ON 68 Evgeni Malkin enters the 2020-21 campaign looking to ascend Pittsburgh’s all-time ranks. He currently sits three points shy of tying Jaromir Jagr for the third-most points in franchise history:

Player PTS 1,723 Sidney Crosby 1,265 Jaromir Jagr 1,079 Evgeni Malkin 1,076 636

Note of the Night GREAT 8 - Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season in Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, marking his 36th career goal against Pittsburgh, the seventh-most goals he has against a single franchise the NHL. - With 707 career goals, Ovechkin needs two goals to pass Mike Gartner (708) for seventh place on the NHL’s all-time goals list. A 30-goal season would propel Ovechkin to 736 goals, which would pass Gartner, Phil Esposito (717) and Marcel Dionne (731) for fifth on the NHL’s all-time goals list, leaving Ovechkin six goals shy of passing (741) for fourth. - With a career goals per game average of 0.61 – the highest among players with at least 700 career goals – Ovechkin has reached the 30-goal mark in each of his 15 NHL seasons, including 32 goals in 2012-13 when teams contested a 48-game schedule. His 15 career 30-goal campaigns trail only Gartner (17) for the most in League history – Ovechkin’s 15 consecutive 30-goal seasons are tied with Gartner (1979-80–1993-94) and Jaromir Jagr (1991-92–2006-07) for the longest such run by an NHL player. - Ovechkin led the NHL with 48 goals last season, winning his third straight and NHL record ninth overall Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the League’s top scorer. With 13 games remaining prior to the 2019-20 season suspension, Ovechkin was on pace for 57 goals, which would have been the second-highest total of his career, his highest total since 2007-08 (65g) and the ninth time Ovechkin would have reached the 50-goal mark. - Ovechkin’s 260 career power-play goals in the regular season are the third-most in NHL history (since 1933-34 when goals by type were officially tracked), five back of Brett Hull (265) for second place. The League’s all-time leader is with 274 – Ovechkin has scored at least 15 power-play goals, the amount needed to pass Andreychuk, in 11 of his 15 NHL seasons.

Top Caps Facts SWEET NICKY - Nicklas Backstrom has recorded points in each of the Capitals' first three games (2g, 2a). - This is the second time in the last three seasons Backstrom has recorded at least four points in the first three games of the season (2018-19: 1g, 5a in first three games). The Capitals are the only team in franchise history to have four goaltenders accomplish this feat (, and Sebastian Charpentier), and all four were originally selected by Washington in the NHL Draft. - Since 2006, the 1,426 combined regular season games played by goaltenders drafted by the Capitals is the highest such total among all teams. - Five of the 45 goaltenders who have played in the NHL this season were originally drafted by Washington. - During the last 11 seasons (2010-21), goaltenders drafted by Washington have accounted for 402 of the team’s 451 wins (89.1 percent). - Since 1994-95, 812 of the Capitals 1,004 goaltending wins (80.9 percent) have come from Capitals draft picks (s/t Mike Vogel).

NO DOWD ABOUT IT - Nic Dowd scored his first goal of the season on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. - Dating back to March 7, 2020, Dowd has four points (3g, 1a) in his last two games against the Penguins. - Dowd has more career goals against Pittsburgh (4g) than any other NHL franchise. - Since joining the Capitals in 2018, Dowd’s 61.7 goals for percentage (50 goals for, 31 against) at even strength over the last three seasons is the seventh-highest percentage among NHL forwards with at least 100 games.

SUPER CARLY - Carlson is two assists shy of passing Dale Hunter (375) for the fifth-most assists in franchise history. - John Carlson passed Mike Gartner (758) for the eighth-most games played in franchise history on Jan. 15 against the Buffalo Sabres. - During the 2019-20 season, Carlson set personal highs for points (15g, 60a) and assists in a season, leading all NHL defensemen in both respective categories. - Carlson’s 60 assists last season were one shy of tying the franchise record for the most by a defenseman in a single season (, 1988-89: 61a), and his 75 points were six shy of the record (Larry Murphy, 1986-87: 81). - Over the last twenty seasons, only three other defensemen have recorded at least 60 assists in a season (Nicklas Lidstrom, twice, 2005-06 and 2007- 08: 64 and 60 assists, respectively; , 2015-16: 66 assists; , 2018-19: 67 assists). - Carlson’s 215 points over the last four seasons (44g, 171a) rank first among defensemen.
