By Brittney Knox Staff Reporter [email protected]

The Million Dollar Band has seen some changes this year, with new uniforms and a new show, which they will debut Saturday at the Tide’s first football game of the 2010 sea- son. “This is the 98th year of the MDB, and this is one of the largest size bands there has been here at UA with 420 names on the roster,” said Randall Coleman, associate director of the Million Dollar Band. “With the success of the foot- ball team, it has trickled down to us with some students com- ing from all over to join the band,” he said. He said alumni, students and directors had a hand in the design of the new uniform and Mal Moore, the University’s athletic director, approved the final design. Justin Ward, a graduate CW | Rachel Hill teaching assistant, said the uniform differences include Left: Members of the Million Dollar Band Mellophone Section (Front: Brandy Bazinet, Liz Kam- gauntlets on the wrists and a mer; Back: Monty Allen, Aaron Gertler, Morgan Bruffy) sport the 2010 version of the MDB half cap on the back that says uniform “BAMA.” Also, the way the jacket is cut in the front forms Above: The section practices on Butler Field for the fi rst football game and halftime performance an “A,” and the entire uniform of the season on Saturday. this year is fitted. “There also is a practical difference about the uniform; it is lighter and therefore it is tary education and one of the members practicing. “Band camp can be very march in any weather—[most- “I joined the band as a way more enjoyable to wear for stu- trumpet section leaders, said. “Warm-up practice in sec- overwhelming at first and even ly] hot.” to meet people, and being the dents,” he said. “It really is a celebration.” tions begins about 15 to 20 intimidating, but after you get “Before coming here, I was only person from my high Band uniforms typically The MDB’s playlist for minutes before the actual prac- past that it is very fun to meet in the band at prior schools for school in California to come last five to seven years and Saturday includes “We are the tice,” he said. “From there we the new people,” Wilson said. about eight years, so this was here, I felt, how can I not make the MDB’s uniforms lasted the Champions,” “Happy Days are work on music, marching and “Although practices were an opportunity I couldn’t pass friends in a 400 person band?” entire seven, he said.
