The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures. -
2006 Labyrinth, the Literary Magazine of the United States Naval Academy
Welcome to the 2006 Labyrinth, the literary magazine of the United States Naval Academy. Since the mid 1970’s, the Labyrinth has regularly published the creative work of midshipmen. Whether in the form of short stories, poetry, visual art, or music, our magazine has dedicated itself to providing a space for midshipmen expression of the highest quality. Not until last spring, however, through the generous donation of Mr. Larry Brady ’66 and family, did we secure enough funding to ensure annual printing. Knowing we would eventually be able to hold a hard copy of the Labyrinth in our hands energized the staff all year long. We also found the Brigade more responsive than ever to our calls for submissions. Our goal this year was to better illuminate the link between the words on these pages and the careers of the people who write them. LGEN Lennox, the Superintendent of West Point and holder of a Ph.D. in Literature from Princeton University, graciously agreed to introduce the Labyrinth. We have included the service selections for all of the first-class midshipmen, as well as the work of several alumni who have gone on to successful careers in the Navy and Marine Corps. Rawlins The Gathering Place opened its doors in 1976 to ex-patients of the Athens Mental Health Center largely through the dedicated efforts of community mental health activist Rita Gillick. Operating according to the clubhouse model of psychosocial rehabilitation, The GP provides a home/family-like environment for its members while providing them with opportunities to develop vocational and social skills necessary for independent and meaningful in the community living. This dissertation is an ethnographic rendering of my three years of involvement with The Gathering Place as a volunteer, musician, advocate, and eventually friend. I share particularly my experiences making music with the members during the collaborative jam session known as GP Jams and the music therapy programs sponsored by the organization. -

Heads crane from the balcony, knees twitch, a chain of excited coughs. I pull a string into tune. The crowd waits, would wait for hours, just to listen. We are about to begin an event, a shared experience of collective spirituality tapped through primal desire for music. I am the crier, they the devotees, ready to sing along to my naked intimacy, to the feelings and melodies that make them think of me as an intimate. Adjust myself on the stool, take a deep breath. Tap my foot in rhythm: 1 and 2 and— A glass breaks behind the bar and a drunken giggle follows from someone near the far wall. -

lie 91 - I, The Synthesis of Sound with Application in a MIDI Environment THESIS Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (APPLIED COMPUTER SCIENCE) of Rhodes University by ANTHONYJAMESKESTERTON January 1991 11 Abstract The wide range of options for experimentation with the synthesis of sound are usually expensive, difficult to obtain, or limit the experimenter. The work described in this thesis shows how the IBM PC and software can be combined to provide a suitable platform for experimentation with different synthesis techniques. This platform is based on the PC, the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and a musical instrument called a digital sampler. The fundamental concepts of sound are described, with reference to digital sound reproduction. A number of synthesis techniques are described. These are evaluated according to the criteria of generality, efficiency and control. The techniques discussed are additive synthesis, frequency modulation synthesis, subtractive synthesis, granular synthesis, resynthesis, wavetable synthesis, and sampling. Spiral synthesis, physical modelling, waveshaping and spectral interpolation are discussed briefly. The Musical Instrument Digital Interface is a standard method of connecting digital musical instruments together. It is the MIDI standard and equipment conforming to that standard that makes this implementation of synthesis techniques possible. As a demonstration ofthe PC platform, additive synthesis, frequency modulation synthesis, granular synthesis and spiral synthesis have been implemented in software. A PC equipped with a MIDI interface card is used to perform the synthesis. The MIDI protocol is used to transmit the resultant sound to a digital sampler. The INMOS transputer is used as an accelerator, as the calculation of a waveform using software is a computational intensive process. -
