PACIFIC MINI GAMES 2022 News Release For Immediate Release- May 24, 2021 For further information, contact: Marco Peter, Chairman Organizing Committee, Pacific Mini Games 2022 [email protected] PACIFIC MINI GAMES 2022 LAUNCH CEREMONY ON JUNE 17, 2021 Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands (NMI) – Pacific Mini Games (PMG) 2022 in the Northern Marianas will hold an official launch ceremony on June 17, 2021, to begin the one-year countdown to the games, expected to draw up over 1,000 athletes from across the Pacific. The ceremony will be led by Governor Ralph DLG Torres and will be held at 4:30 p.m. at on Saipan the Oleai Sports Complex, the venue for several of the games. “We anticipate that the Pacific Mini Games will be the largest sporting event in the Northern Marianas in 2022, and we are excited to give our Pacific-wide athletes the first glimpses of what they can expect when they come to compete,” said PMG Chief Executive Officer Ben Babauta. “The launch ceremony acknowledges the work already being undertaken by the committee, local federations, and contractors to ensure our facilities and all arrangements are ready, and it will be an opportunity to get the local community excited and involved in the games leading into 2022. The ceremony will include remarks by Governor Torres and other dignitaries, an indigenous cultural presentation, and official unveiling of the PMG logo. The Northern Marianas has pledged $4,000,000 to host the Mini Games, which will be held on June 17-25, 2022. The games are a multi-sport event governed by the Pacific Games Committee (PGC) and are as a scaled-down version of the Pacific Games, held every alternating four years. The PGC is also supporting the event financially, and fundraising for cash and in- kind support will also be conducted. The games will include athletics, badminton, baseball, golf, beach volleyball, tennis, triathlon, va’a (outrigger canoe), and weightlifting at various venues around Saipan. In the spirit of a tough sporting challenge, the 2009 Pacific Mini Games presented numerous obstacles for the Cook Islands, its people, and Government. And although the early path to ‘victory’ was very much an uphill battle I am pleased to say that those faced with the task of producing these Games did not shy away from the jobs at hand. Of course, those jobs were many and everyone from the tireless volunteers to the relentless efforts of the organisers are deserving of high praise. In the aftermath of such a major event, particularly for a small island nation like ours, the focus often falls on the nature of ‘how’ and ‘why’ we struggled with certain difficulties.

The Pacific Games Council and its 22-member island nations and territories from Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia call on Pacific Forum Leaders to: 1) Endorse a Pacific Sport and Physical Activity Action Plan to maximize the contribution of sport, physical activity and physical education to sustainable development in Pacific Island Countries and Territories; and 2) Establish a regional coordination mechanism to; (i) provide technical assistance to Forum Island Countries and (ii) develop integrated systems for data collection, analysis, policy development and implementation.

GENERAL BACKGROUND The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is compromised of 14 lovely islands in northern Micronesia. On our three main islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota, one experiences the unhurried, friendly lifestyle and warm, island hospitality that are as unforgettable as our magical Micronesian sunsets. The population of the Northern Mariana Islands, as of January 1, 2011, is estimated at 50,000. Saipan, our largest island and the proposed site for the 2017 Pacific Mini Games, is the most developed of the Northern Marianas, and is home to most of our population. Saipan offers the visiting athlete an inviting combination of modern amenities, such as a thriving tourism district with world-class hotels, restaurants, and shops, and the beauty of a clean and quiet tropical island. Almost all major venues, including proposed Games villages, sports venues, and leisure sites, are located within a short walk or drive.

Introduction Despite having gone through a marathon 18 days full of events against all odds due to the pandemic, the glamour of the Summer Olympic Games lived on as the entire world got together in a true show of force and unity with athletes battling it out to the least shot, millimetre and point to return back home as Olympic heroes. The starting lists and medals’ table have, as in previous editions, served as an ideal platform for the traditional powerhouses in world sport to further demonstrate their dominance with a few surprises making the headlines from time to time. Ever since the inaugural edition of the Games for the Small States of Europe (GSSE) held in 1985 in San Marino, this biannual event became a benchmark for the participating countries to gauge their progress against other similar countries whose population is less than 1 million inhabitants. As per Table 1, if the same model were to be applied across the globe at Olympic level, 48 countries would fit in the bill for such a comparative exercise with Cyprus’ population, one of the founding members of the GSSE, now increasing to 1.2 million.

In addition, have participated and send over 1000 athletes abroad to represent Palau in various regional and internation- al sporting events such as the 2002 Micronesian Games in Pohnpei, FSM, 2003 South Pacific Games in Fiji, 2006 Micronesian Games in CNMI, 2007 Pacific Games in Samoa, 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia, 2014 Microne- sian Games, and just recently the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, PNG. Palau has participated in all the Summer Olympic Games since 2000. Palau National Olympic Committee and the respective National Sports Federations would not have been able to achieve these many milestones without the unwavering support of the Palau National Government and the many sponsors and donors, families, coaches, athletes and key individuals who all have continued their committed full support to the nu- merous programs and development of sports in Palau.
