In presenting the Twenty-third Annual Issue of the Greenock Post-Office Directory, the Publishers trust that the information contained in it will be found as accurate and copious as that in previous issues. The steadily increas- ing population of Greenock, and the consequent extension of the town, have this year greatly augmented the work of the Publishers in completing the Directory in a satisfactory way but they are satisfied that the public will recognise' the ; importance and the necessity of such additional exertions, not only in the daily use of the Directory, but in an extended patronage. It must be obvious that . this issue contains the names and addresses of a greater number of inhabitants than has hitherto been given, and this circumstance, together with the difficulty experienced in obtaining the correct numbers of properties in new and extended streets, have in a great measure delayed the publication. Otherwise the Directory would have been in the hands of the public some time since. The Publishers, however, felt it to be their duty to wait rather than risk the possibility of issuing an incomplete book. And they therefore trust that, as in years past, it will be found an acceptable compendium of all matters of business importance connected with the town and port. Without doubt, the Publishers are deeply indebted to those who have so kindly supplied them with useful information, and to the general public for the extensive circulation of the Directory j and while expressing thanks, they may also state that sugges- tions for the improvement of the work are carefully consid- ered, and, if practicable, carried out. The suggestion that a plan of the town should form a part of this year's Directory is in' the meantime premature, but will not escape the atten- tion of the Publishers Post-Office, Greenock, June, 1870. — BONUS YEAR.
