BEA D IBBBLS NmZa VETERAN AND VINTAGE MOTORING SEPTEMBER, 1966 "HORSELESS CARRIAGE" In 1893 the first gasoline pow ered motorcar in the U nited States cruised down the main streets of Springfield, Mass., at a speed of five mil es an hour! This car was mad e by two brothers , Charles E. and J. Frank Duryea. In 1896 Henry Ford drove his first car out. of the machine shop in Detroit. Later, his system of machine-made, interchangeable parts, and assembly line production, put. motorcars within the price range of the man-in-the-street. By the beginning of the 20th century, 8,000 motorcars were re gistered in the United States. These were powered by stea m, gasoline or electricity, and even then they did not look much like the original "Horseless Carriage." Some of the laws passed in the early days of the motorcar make us chuckle today. For instance, one community rul ed that if a horse refused to pass a motorcar the driver of the car mu st "take the machine apart •.. and conceal the parts in the grass". In som e places motorcars were banned entirely, and angry farmers guarded their livestock with shotguns against these "contraptions of the devil." It is easy to se e that early motorists were indeed brave pion eers, often running risks that would be hard to imagine today, for they also had to contend with the discomfort of rough roads, open driving seats and temperamental engines. Times have changed and those first motoring enthusiasts would be the first to appreciate the advances made both in car and tyre design since th e exciting, stimulating days of the "Horseless Carriage." 1 } S 1 FIRESTONE Tyres, since the earliest days of motoring, have f set the standard of reliability, economy and safety.

The company is believed to have taken the decision after indications in Japan that the automotive markets are not getting any better, Honda having recently announced a 56% drop in earnings in the last quarter, compared to 2008. Prior to that the company was looking at other options, such as selling the team on to someone else. This has now been axed and the company will simply close things down and settle all the necessary contractual commitments as quickly as possible. The news, if confirmed, will be another blow to the manufacturer power in F1 as it will be the third withdrawal by a major car company in 11 months, following in the footsteps of Honda and BMW. There are also doubts about the future of Renault's factory team. The news will also be a blow to the Formula One Teams' Association, although the members have learned that working together produces much better results than trying to take on the authorities alone. It also means that there are now just three manufacturers left: Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault, and engine supply from Cosworth will become essential to ensure there are sufficient engines to go around.

  • Technically Challenged: Renault Innovations in Formula One End Title
Atlas F1 Magazine: title Technically Challenged: Renault Innovations in Formula One end title Technically Challenged: Renault Innovations in Formula One By Craig Scarborough, England Atlas F1 Technical Writer Since making their debut in the 1977 season, the Renault Formula One team have always been breaking new ground in terms of technology, ignoring the established routes and opting for innovative approaches. Atlas F1's Craig Scarborough reviews Renault's history of technological breakthroughs, from the first turbo engine to the innovative OPT system Renault have used motorsport to demonstrate their technology for many years. While other motorsport arenas have seen Renault's participation, it has been Formula One that has seen Renault's greatest input and most influential work, dating back to 1977 with the debut of an all French team from the tyres to the fuel, from the drivers to the chassis. The eighties dawned and Renault were winning races and supplying engines to other teams. A change of heart lead the team to leave Formula One briefly, returning with a new breed of engine, the V10, at the end of that decade. Such was Renault's dominance in the nineties they left F1 once more, only to return in the new millenium with another ground breaking engine, the wide angle V10. But this time as a full manufacturer, allowing Renault to demonstrate their undersung chassis technology as well as their engines. For nearly 30 years, Renault has used F1 as a platform to learn technology and show the world how it applies that technology. Before F1 Pre dating their involvement with Formula One, Renault had a motorsport history throughout the first half of the century dating right back to the Renault brothers original business in 1899.

The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. Baker Department of Geography School of Liberal Arts IUPUI We thank Terri Talbert-Hatch and Pete Hylton for their comments and support of Motorsports Studies. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

I felt comfortable right the way through and it was great to finally get another win at one of the real classic F1 circuits. Now, we head to another of those in Monza. It’s an awesome track – so fast and with some of the most passionate fans you’ll see anywhere in the world. I was actually at this circuit with Sir Stirling Moss earlier this year, driving the banking in his old Mercedes W 196, which was just awesome. Having that taste of what it was like for those guys back in the day really gives you a feel for the history of this place and why it became so legendary. It’s still a big challenge today, too. Fast, but really technical at the same time with some heavy braking and big kerbs to ride for the best line. Racing in Italy brings back a lot of good memories for me and I’d love to add to those this weekend, so that’s the aim. Nico Rosberg Page 2 The race in Spa was definitely disappointing. My start was not good so I need to work on that and also on finding those extra tenths in qualifying to get back on top there.
