WWW.BALLETMET.ORG 2 www.ohiodance.org Dance Matters: Paving Possibilities The OhioDance Festival and Conference is an annual statewide celebration of dance through classes, workshops, discussions and performances. Nationally recognized artist, Teena Marie Custer, will serve as guest artist for the annual Ohio- Dance Spring Festival and Conference at BalletMet in Columbus on April 22-24, 2016. Teena was Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 to Watch” in 2007, and was featured in Dance Teacher magazine in October 2012. She is on the faculty at Slippery Rock University, Pittsburgh and American Dance Festival at Duke University. She is a B-girl and hip-hop dance-theater artist, a member of street- dance crews Get Down Gang and the all-female Venus Fly Trap Crew. Cheri Mitchell will be honored with a posthumous award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of arts administration. The Maggie Patton dance scholarship and OhioDance outstanding dance student will be Rodney Veal awarded to a graduating high school student.     Celebrating 50 years of Dance The lights go down.The orchestra begins to play. Dancers appear and there’s magic on the stage. The Omaha Academy of Ballet, a dream by its founders for a school and a civic ballet company for Omaha, was realized by the gift of two remarkable people: Valerie Roche ARAD director of the school and the late Lee Lubbers S.J., of Creighton University. Lubbers served as Board President and production manager, while Roche choreographed, rehearsed and directed the students during their performances. The dream to have a ballet company for the city of Omaha had begun. Lubbers also hired Roche later that year to teach dance at the university. This decision helped establish the creation of a Fine and Performing Arts Department at Creighton. The Academy has thrived for 50 years, thanks to hundreds of volunteers, donors, instructors, parents and above all the students. Over the decades, the Academy has trained many dancers who have gone on to become members of professional dance companies such as: the American Ballet Theatre, Los Angeles Ballet, Houston Ballet, National Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, San Francisco Ballet, Minnesota Dance Theatre, Denver Ballet, Momix and the Omaha Ballet. Our dancers have also reached beyond the United States to join: The Royal Winnipeg in Canada and the Frankfurt Ballet in Germany. Nationally recognized Alexis Willson, will serve as a guest artist. As a professional dancer she has performed classically and commercially all over the world. Alexis earned her B.F.A. in drama from the prestigious Carnegie-Mellon University. After retiring from dancing, she acted in commercials and later became a casting associate. Alexis has written and published poetry, a full length musical, made contributions to a variety of published works, and self-published her Melanye White Dixon recent memoir, Not So Black and White. Valdez, Jr. Company Manager: Jacob Goodhart Executive Director: Nikki Chalas A few words from Zvi about the creation of DABKE: The idea of creating a contemporary dance piece based on a Middle Eastern folk dance revealed itself in a Lebanese restaurant in Stockholm, Sweden. My Israeli partner and a Lebanese waiter became friendly and were soon dancing the Dabke between tables. While patrons cheered, I remained still, transfixed, all the while envisioning this as material for a new piece. Dabke (translated from Arabic as "stomping of the feet") is a traditional folk dance and is now the national dance of Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Palestine. Israelis have their own version. It is a line dance often performed at weddings, holidays, and community celebrations. The dance strongly references solidarity, and traditionally only men participated. The dancers, linked by hands or shoulders, stomp the ground with complex rhythms, emphasizing their connection to the land. While the group keeps rhythm, the leader, called Raas (meaning "head"), improvises on pre-choreographed movement phrases. He also twirls a handkerchief or string of beads known as a Masbha. When I was a child and teenager growing up in a Kibbutz in northern Israel, Friday nights were folk dance nights.
