The sediment was incubated together with a mix- ture of four electron donors and pentaCB, and after five months of incubation, the microbial community structure was analyzed. Both DGGE and clone library analyses showed that the most expansive phylogenetic group within the consortium was affiliated with the phylum Chloroflexi, which includes Dehalococcoides-like bacteria. PCR using a degenerate primer set targeting conserved regions in reductive-dehalogenase-homologous (rdh) genes from Dehalococcoides species revealed that DNA fragments (approximately 1.5–1.7 kb) of rdh genes were am- plified from genomic DNA of the consortium. The deduced amino acid sequences of the rdh genes shared sever- al characteristics of reductive dehalogenases. -

In eukaryotic organisms, multiple isozymes and subfamilies of PIP4K/PIP5K proteins are found and it is of much interest to understand their evolution and species distribution and what unique molecular and biochemical characteristics distinguish specific isozymes and subfamilies of proteins. We report here the species distribution of different PIP4K/PIP5K family of proteins in eukaryotic organisms and phylogenetic analysis based on their protein sequences. Our results indicate that the distinct homologs of both PIP4K and PIP5K are found in different organisms belonging to the Holozoa clade of eukaryotes, which comprises of various metazoan phyla as well as their close unicellular relatives Choanoflagellates and Filasterea. In contrast, the deeper-branching eukaryotic lineages, as well as plants and fungi, contain only a single homolog of the PIP4K/PIP5K proteins. In parallel, our comparative analyses of PIP4K/PIP5K protein sequences have identified six highly-specific molecular markers consisting of conserved signature indels (CSIs) that are uniquely shared by either the PIP4K or PIP5K proteins, or both, or specific subfamilies of these proteins. -

Fact Sheet Updated April 29, 2021 CHINA’S HUMAN SPACEFLIGHT PROGRAM: BACKGROUND AND LIST OF CREWED AND AUTOMATED LAUNCHES China's human spaceflight program, Project 921, officially began in 1992. The program is proceeding at a measured pace. The most recent crewed launch, Shenzhou-11 in October 2016, was the 11th flight in the series, but only the sixth to carry a crew. Shenzhou Spacecraft: Shenzhou 1-4 were automated tests of the spacecraft. Shenzhou-8 was an automated test of rendezvous and docking procedures with the Tiangong-1 space station. The others (5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11) carried crews of one, two or three people and were launched in 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2016 respectively (see list below) Space Stations: Tiangong-1, China's first space station, was launched in September 2011. It hosted the automated Shenzhou-8 in 2011 and two three-person crews: Shenzhou-9 in 2012 and Shenzhou-10 in 2013. It made an uncontrolled reentry at 8:16 pm April 1, 2018 EDT (00:16 April 2 UTC; 8:16 am April 2 Beijing Time) over the southern Pacific Ocean. Tiangong-1 was a small 8.5 metric ton (MT) module. As first space stations go, it was rather modest -- just less than half the mass of the world's first space station, the Soviet Union’s Salyut 1. Launched in 1971, Salyut 1 had a mass of about 18.6 MT. The first U.S. space station, Skylab, launched in 1973, had a mass of about 77 MT. Today's International Space Station (ISS), a partnership among the United States, Russia, Japan, Europe, and Canada, has a mass of about 400 MT and has been permanently occupied by 2-6 person crews rotating on 4-6 month missions since November 2000. -

We are investigating virus-host relationships and virus diversity in extreme-environment microbial eco- systems to understand the importance of viruses on primordial Earth. Boiling Springs Lake (BSL), located in Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA, U.S.A. is a large, acidic hotspring (pH 2.5, 55C-95C) supporting a microbial ecosystem comprised of Archaea, Bacteria and several species of unicellular Eukarya [1], [2]. BSL is thus an ideal environment for discovering viruses that infect extremophilic microorganisms from the major groups of cellular life. As no viruses of extremophilic eu- karyotes have yet been identified, study of BSL offers a unique opportunity for their discovery. BSL exhibits low pH and is predicted to precipitate the iron-bearing minerals jarosite and goethite. Both minerals have recently been detected in Martian soil by the Opportunity rover [3]. These minerals are posi- tively correlated with increased virus precipitation and binding to inorganic substrates. Thus, virus biosigna- tures may be present in BSL sediments. Recent bioinformatics research has identified so- called “virus hallmark genes” that are prevalent in large groups of viruses but have few, if any, cellular homologues. Analysis of this group of viral genes sug- gests that viruses have ancient, possibly pre-cellular origins [4]. In conjunction with the Broad Institute, we are generating a metavirome of ca.
