Within the space of three weeks, sports car fans have been thrilled by the lead in the manufacturers’ championship changing twice. Following two one-two victories in succession, Audi had taken the top spot in the standings at the season’s midpoint. Although the brand had to relinquish its lead in the race in Japan, it remains in striking distance of the leader of the standings. Now the World Championship decision is coming to a head, as the sixth of eight WEC races is on the agenda at Shanghai on November 2. The brand with the four rings is separated by merely eight points from leader of the standings Toyota in the manufacturers’ classification, while the brand’s advantage over the third-placed brand, Porsche, is 66 points. A total of 132 points are yet to be awarded until the finale. The WEC round in China has special significance for Audi for several reasons. The track is regarded as very challenging, the team achieved victory there last year, and the ‘Middle Kingdom’ has evolved into the largest sales market for AUDI AG. In China, the company delivered 415,704 automobiles between January and September – 16 percent more than a year ago.

  • Porsche and Michelin Clinch the Season's FIA WEC Drivers' Crown
MEDIA INFORMATION November 21, 2015 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 6 Hours of Bahrain Porsche and Michelin clinch the season’s FIA WEC Drivers’ crown and LM GTE Cups in Bahrain to add to their 2015 Manufacturers’ title The 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) concluded with Michelin’s partner Porsche claiming the top prizes in both the LM P1 and LM GTE Pro classes. Following its return to world class endurance racing in 2014, the Stuttgart brand emerged as the discipline’s team to beat this season despite year-long pressure from fellow Michelin runners Audi (in LM P1) and Ferrari (in LM GTE Pro). By providing tyres developed to meet the specific needs of its different manufacturer teams in this championship which permits open competition between tyre firms, Michelin enabled all of its partners and drivers to fight at the sharp end in the course of the 2015 season. “I would like to congratulate Porsche on its different titles and I am proud of the role Michelin played in its success,” said Michelin Motorsport Director Pascal Couasnon. “We work closely with all of our partners and we were at their side throughout this year’s FIA WEC which was of an extremely high level in both sporting and technological terms. It’s important to remember that this year’s cars marked a big step forward, especially the LM P1 prototypes which boasted power outputs and aerodynamic downforce of an unprecedented level.” The performance, durability and versatility of Michelin’s 2015 range of endurance racing tyres were illustrated by the high grip they delivered in cold weather at Silverstone and Spa, the quadruple-plus stints they permitted in LM P1 at Le Mans, their consistency and also their ability to double stint at the season’s most exacting circuits in high temperatures.

MEDIA INFORMATION Shanghai, November 2, 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 2014 6 Hours of Shanghai Michelin scoops top finishes in every class… LM P1: Toyota Racing makes the break in the FIA WEC standings LM P2: podium honours for SMP LM GTE Pro: a one-two for Porsche Team Manthey opens up the title chase LM GTE AM: Aston Martin Racing take the spoils LM P1 class After securing a one-two finish three weeks ago at Fuji, Toyota Racing produced a strong performance in qualifying for the 6 Hours of Shanghai where the N°8 Toyota TS 040-Hybrid of Davidson/Buemi qualified on the front row of the grid and the N°7 sister car of Wurz/Sarrazin/Nakajima started from fourth place. The team went on to convert this speed into a one-two finish at the end of China’s round of the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship. The race started under a clear sky and the vast majority of the lingering damp patches after overnight rain had cleared. As the two Toyota TS 040-Hybrids, two Audi R18 e-tron quattros and two Porsche 919 Hybrids battled for supremacy at the start, the opening lap was marked by a collision between the N°51 Ferrari 458 GTE and KCMG’s Oreca 03R-Nissan which slowed without warning because of a sudden mechanical problem. The safety car was dispatched and the two Toyotas caught their rivals by surprise by making a pit stop after just two laps at reduced speed (the N°8 car even pitted a second time to complete the operation).

  • The 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain: Tyre Strategies and World Titles
MEDIA INFORMATION November 2014 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 6 Hours of Bahrain The 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain: tyre strategies and world titles The 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain turned out to be an emotional event where Michelin tyres played a fundament role in the final outcome. The result settled a number of Drivers’ titles, with Toyota Racing’s Antony DAVIDSON and Sébastien BUEMI securing the top prize in LM P1, while the LM GTE Pro crown was sealed by AF Corse/Ferrari racers Gianmaria BRUNI and Toni VILANDER. Tyre strategy key in qualifying Qualifying practice for the 2014 6 Hours of Bahrain produced a contest in which tyre strategy helped Porsche Team to snatch pole position from Toyota Racing by mere tenths of a second. The German squad chose MICHELIN’s ‘soft high temperature’ compound, while Audi Sport Team Joest – which was represented by a single R18 e-tron quattro in qualifying – and Toyota Racing both opted for the French firm’s ‘medium high temperature’ alternative. The fastest lap was eventually posted by the N°14 Porsche 919 Hybrid in the hands of DUMAS/JANI who recorded a best time of 1m41.897s round the 5.412km Sakhir International Circuit, and an average lap of 1m43.145s. The N°8 Toyota TS040 Hybrid (DAVIDSON/BUEMI) was second fastest (+0.265s), followed by the N°20 Porsche 919 Hybrid (BERNHARD/HARTLEY, +1.046s). While Porsche’s choice proved judicious for qualifying, the question was whether it would be suitable for the start of the 6 Hours of Bahrain which took place with track temperatures standing at around 40°C, since the tyres used for qualifying had to be fitted for the first stint of the race? Romain DUMAS wasn’t sure… “I’ve been nominated to start the race in the N°14 Porsche and I think I will put on a good show for the spectators on soft compound tyres.

In the race, Audi – currently the runner-up in the manufacturers’ standings – is aiming to make up positions with a consistently good performance throughout the six-hour race. Audi has thoroughly prepared for round six of the season in three free practice and one qualifying sessions in China. The 5.451-kilometer track at Shanghai features very specific characteristics. While the various race car concepts are similarly fast in the first two sectors, the differences in the third sector are significant, as the tight turns do not suit the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. Consequently, the two Audi driver teams did not manage to get beyond the third row. For Audi driver Loïc Duval (F), qualifying began with an unpleasant surprise. On the first lap, an opponent in an LMP2 race car hit the rear of the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. In spite of the incident, the driver of car number 1 achieved the best result within the team. The hybrid sports car from Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm set a lap time of 1m 49.454s, averaged from the four fastest laps, and will be starting the race from grid position five.

  • Michelin's Tyres for the 2014 6 Hours of Shanghai
MEDIA INFORMATION October 2014 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 6 Hours of Shanghai Michelin’s tyres for the 2014 6 Hours of Shanghai The challenge of Shanghai International Circuit for tyres Designed by the architect Hermann Tilke (like the circuits at Sepang, Malaysia, and in Bahrain), the Shanghai International Circuit was built in 2004. The 5.451km track stands out through its combination of short straights and tight turns. It is fast and technically demanding, with repeated hard braking and hard re-acceleration out of the corners. Meanwhile, the surface is aggressive and the temperature can easily exceed 30°C in clear weather at this time of autumn. As a consequence, the tyres are subjected to significant constraints for which Michelin has produced a range of solutions. The forecast for this year’s 6 Hours of Shanghai predicts mild weather for the race, but free practice and qualifying are likely to be cloudy, and possibly wet. That would make life complex for the teams who would consequently be unable to fine-tune their set-ups and tyre choices for Sunday’s race. • TOYOTA GAZOO Racing 2017 Shanghai Preview
CHINESE CHALLENGE FOR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Monday 30 October 2017 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing is ready for the penultimate round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the 6 Hours of Shanghai. The team travels to China in a positive mood following a well-earned one-two finish in its home race at Fuji Speedway earlier this month, its third win from seven races in 2017. Sébastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima in the #8 TS050 HYBRID are aiming for back-to-back victories after their triumph in Japan while Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López in the #7 car will push for a first win of the season. For José, the Shanghai International Circuit is a rarity on the 2017 WEC calendar as it is one of the few tracks he has visited before. He won three of his six races there in the FIA World Touring Car Championship, finishing second in the others. The circuit, located 40km from central Shanghai, features a combination of long straights and a variety of corners, from very slow hairpins at the beginning and end of the lap to faster, sweeping corners in the middle section. To meet that challenge, the TS050 HYBRIDs will again run in high-downforce specification with set-ups fine-tuned during Friday practice to maximise performance to the specific demands of the 16-corner track. TOYOTA has won twice in its five previous visits to Shanghai, during its first WEC season in 2012 and then as part of its World Championship-winning 2014 campaign, while last season saw the TS050 HYBRIDs earn a strong double podium finish.
