It argues that the polemical, dystopian, and apocalyptic narratives so abundant in twentieth-century literature and film participate in an ingrained literary tradition that accounts for society's misfortunes as penalty for its social and moral evils while, at the same time, emphasizing an American exceptionalism born out of a belief in the society's election through its covenant with God. The project makes connections between early-American texts and related works of twentieth and twenty-first century American literature and science fiction in order to engage issues of American nationalism and to interrogate how these texts construct and reinforce an American identity. It investigates how groups during different historical periods adapted the jeremiad either to advocate or to critique political and cultural movements. Chapter one discusses this history of the jeremiad, situates the project within previous scholarship on the form, and argues for the continued relevance of the jeremiad in twentieth and twenty-first century fiction. Chapter two considers the role of the jeremiad in the work of Robert A. Heinlein during the cultural Cold War. Chapter three concerns the indebtedness of environmental science fiction and film to the American jeremiad tradition and, more specifically, how their dual imperatives of polemical and exceptionalism rhetoric continue to shape the ways that Americans conceive of environmental problems and policy. Finally, chapter four interrogates the role of the jeremiad in science fiction films since 1980 that function as countersubversive texts and, subsequently, in films that serve as critical responses to earlier attempts at foreclosing dissent. vi INTRODUCTION “MAY THE LORD MAKE IT LIKE THAT OF NEW ENGLAND” It has become commonplace to talk of America as a city upon a hill. Contemporary American politicians of all persuasions have invoked the historical metaphor to advocate for their particular policies or ideology. Some have conjured the metaphor for the nation in order to invoke its greatness and prowess, while others have used it to appeal to the nation’s virtuous founding principles in calls for reform. President Ronald Reagan’s frequent reference to “the shining city on a hill” stands as the most well-known example of its use (though embellished). Of course, the original sentiment, of America as a city upon a hill, was articulated first by John Winthrop in his 1630 speech given to the new members of the Massachusetts Bay colony as they arrived aboard the Arbella. We have come to know his speech as “A Model of Christian Charity.” Winthrop’s speech is a short sermon on the new demands, economic, social, political and spiritual, that life in the new world would require. A broad-ranging sermon, it covered aspects as pragmatic as how the new community would approach lending, forgiveness of debts, and how neighbors would provide for each other in times of calamity or of scarcity. More importantly, however, the sermon described the relationship this new community would have with God. Comparing themselves to the Israelites, these colonists saw themselves as entering a new wilderness and, as such, having entered into a new covenant with God: what Winthrop likened to a marriage of “most strict and peculiar manner” in which God would be “the more jealous of our love and obedience.” His message carried with it a dual meaning: great is the reward if the covenant is kept, but great too is the damnation risked in failing. Reminding his fellow colonists of this charge, he used the metaphor, now famous, of a city upon a hill. He explained that the “eyes of the world 1 are upon us” and that, if we were to fail, “we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.” Their failure, he said, would “open the mouths of enemies to speak evil of the ways of God.” On the other hand, their success would provide an example to the rest of the world. Ich durfte den Film mit Arnold Schwar- zenegger damals noch nicht sehen und sammelte daher verzweifelt alle Artikel über John Milius’ CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982), die ich finden konnte. So kaufte ich mein erstes Cinema-Heft und meine erste Bravo-Ausgabe, denn beide berichteten ausführlich über den archaischen Barbaren. Und welche Freude war es, als der Heyne Verlag mit seiner Veröf- fentlichung der Conan-Stories und -Romane begann, die jeweils mit einem Filmfoto auf dem Cover erschienen. Diese blassgelben Buchrücken schmücken noch heute mein Lesezimmer. Conan kam damals zur richtigen Zeit: mit der wachsenden Popularität von J. R. R. For many years, as films became more narrative- based, documentaries branched out and took many forms since their early beginnings - some of which have been termed propagandistic or non-objective.     4.3 Reality Effects: The Ideology of the Long Take in the Cinema of Alfonso Cuarón BY BRUCE ISAACS Between 2001 and 2013, Alfonso Cuarón, working in concert with long-time collaborator, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, produced several works that effectively modeled a signature disposition toward film style. After a period of measured success in Hollywood (A Little Princess [1995], Great Expectations [1998]), Cuarón and Lubezki returned to Mexico to produce Y Tu Mamá También (2001), a film designed as a low- budget, independent vehicle (Riley). In 2006, Cuarón directed Children of Men, a high budget studio production, and in March 2014, he won the Academy Award for Best Director for Gravity (2013), a film that garnered the praise of the American and European critical establishment while returning in excess of half a billion dollars worldwide at the box office (Gravity, Box Office Mojo). Lubezki acted as cinematographer on each of the three films.[1] In this chapter, I attempt to trace the evolution of a cinematographic style founded upon the “long take,” the sequence shot of excessive duration. Reality Effects Each of Cuarón’s three films under examination demonstrates a fixation on the capacity of the image to display greater and more complex indices of time and space, holding shots across what would be deemed uncomfortable durations in a more conventional mode of cinema. As Udden argues, Cuarón’s films are increasingly defined by this mark of the long take, “shots with durations well beyond the industry standard” (26-27). Such shots are “attention-grabbing spectacles,” displaying the virtuosity of the filmmaker over and above the requirement of narrative unfolding.

    ISSN 1751-8229 Volume Eleven, Number Two On Anamorphic Adaptations and the Children of Men Gregory Wolmart, Drexel University, United States Abstract In this article, I expand upon Slavoj Zižek’s “anamorphic” reading of Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men (2006). In this reading, Zižek distinguishes between the film’s ostensible narrative structure, the “foreground,” as he calls it, and the “background,” wherein the social and spiritual dissolution endemic to Cuaron’s dystopian England draws the viewer into a recognition of the dire conditions plaguing the post-9/11, post-Iraq invasion, neoliberal world. The foreground plots the conventional trajectory of the main character Theo from ordinary, disaffected man to self-sacrificing hero, one whose martyrdom might pave the way for a new era of regeneration. According to Zižek, in this context the foreground merely entertains, while propagating some well-worn clichés about heroic individualism as demonstrated through Hollywood’s generic conventions of an action- adventure/political thriller/science-fiction film. Zižek contends that these conventions are essential to the revelation of the film’s progressive politics, as “the fate of the individual hero is the prism through which … [one] see[s] the background even more sharply.” Zižek’s framing of Theo merely as a “prism” limits our understanding of the film by not taking into account its status as an adaptation of P.D. James’ The Children of Men (1992). This article offers such an account by interpreting the differences between the film and its literary source as one informed by the transition from Cold War to post-9/11 neoliberal conceptions of identity and politics.

    ABSTRACT Evangelical Jeremiads and Consuming Eves: The Relationship of Religion and Consumerism in Eighteenth Century Colonial America Amanda S. Mylin, M.A. Mentor: Thomas S. Kidd, Ph.D. This thesis examines the commercial world of the American British colonies from the Great Awakening to the American Revolution through the lens of eighteenth century American religious history. It examines evangelical and Quaker responses to the consumer market through published sermons and other religious rhetoric. Colonial ministers discussed the dangers of consumerism through the format of jeremiads, seeing God’s punishment for indulgence in luxury through the turmoil of the eighteenth century. However, revival ministers also used commercial methods to spread the gospel. Additionally, women in particular were a focal point of religious discussion about consumerism. While many historians have focused on the consumer revolution, and many have focused on early American religion, little has been done to unite these threads. This thesis hopes to do that by showing that religious discussion was essential to the American tradition of participating in the marketplace. There is chilling continuity in the culture of imperialism, just as there is in the lists of its massacres, its gross exploitations. It is there in the rhetoric of its apologists - from Manifest Destiny to Pax Britannica to the American Century and now the New World Order: global conquest and homogenisa- tion, epochal teleologies of the most 'inevitable' and determinist nature imaginable, the increasingly explicit authoritarianism of political dis- course, the tension between 'ultra-imperialism' and nationalism, both of the conquerors and the conquered. In this discussion, I would like to consider recent American films of the Reagan-Bush period which take imperialism as their narrative material - that is, America's place in the global system, its relations with diverse peoples and political forces, the kind of America and the kind of world which are at stake.
