Untitled Document Mr. Claro -- Modern Nonfiction Reading Selection by Joan Didion Holy Water JOAN DIDION is a fifth-generation Californian, born in Sacramento (1934), who took her B.A. at Berkeley and lives in Los Angeles. Between college and marriage to the writer John Gregory Dunne, she lived in New York for seven years, where she worked as an editor for Vogue and wrote essays for the National Review and the Saturday Evening Post. In California, Didion and Dunne separately write novels and magazine articles and collaborate on screenplays. Didion's novels are Run River (1963), Play It as It Lays (1970), A Book of Common Prayer (1977), and Democracy (1984). Her collections of essays are Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1968), The White Album (1979), from which we have taken this selection, and After Henry (1992). She published Salvador in 1983, in 1987 Miami. Joan Didion is one of our best nonfiction writers. She describes the alien, simple California she grew up in and the southern California where she now lives - a landscape of drive-ins and orange groves, ocean and freeway, the Manson murders and ordinary, domestic, adulterous homicide. She has done witness to the turmoils of the decades, especially the sixties - drugs, Vietnam, and personal breakdown. Expertly sensitive and inventive with language, she is most talented in the representation of hysteria. While her book about El Salvador mentions politics, it is essentially the record of a sensibility, sensitive to fear, exposed to an atmosphere that engenders it: "Terror is the given of the place." Much of Didion's journalism derives from interviews. -

Phil., Ph. d., Head of the Department, Department of English SWAMI VIVEKANANADA ARTS & SCIENCE COLLEGE, VILLUPURAM, TAMILNADU, THIRUVALLUVAR UNIVERSITY E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Joan Didion, a contemporary American author who demands consideration both as a non- fiction author and as a fiction author, is regarded a novelist, an essayist, and a New Journalist. An empirical approach to Didion’s works shows a progressive change in her perception of the connection of literature to life. The present research explores the impact of existentialist doctrines - both technically and thematically - throughout four major novels of Didion, and it is the critical study to suggest existentialism as granting a logical method by which to perceive the whole canon - focusing particularly on the existential experiences of the female protagonists in the novels. The study analyses Run River (1963) and A Book of Common Prayer (1977) which graphically reveal the existential experience of an individual entangled in Bad Faith. The writings of Didion present a comprehensive detail about the Existentialist struggle in America. America could have been regarded as an “Existential” nation from the angle that it acquired several features that would have led Sartre or Camus to experience several classic symptoms connected with the ideology. Alienation, angst, nausea, ennui and a swarm of similarly dreary physical and mental conditions could have easily been found within the nation. In conjunction with the increasing refinement of her fiction, there remains a core value consistent with the existential perspective Didion explores in each novel. -

New York: Peter Lang, 1989. 160 pp. $29.95 by Angela DiPace Fritz Nothing dissuades Joan Didion in her fiction and nonfiction, nor Michelle Carbone Loris in Innocence, Loss and Recovery in the Art of Joan Didion from the firmly held belief, an unflinchingly biblical echo reverberating in contemporary society, that "the story of the wilderness was and is redemptive," first enunciated by Didion in'her pivotal essay "Thinking About Western Thinking" in 1976 (quoted in Loris, p. 1). From this moral stance emerge several interrelated subtexts, or maxims, which, Loris persuasively argues, overtly or covertly find expression in all of Didion's oeuvre. -

The New York Times referred to it as “a rich display of some of the best prose written today in this country.” Her critically acclaimed second novel Play It as It Lays (1970) was about a fading starlet whose dissatis- faction with Hollywood leads her further and further away from reality. Engaging herself in the Hollywood lifestyle, Didion would go on to co-write four screenplays with her husband: Panic in Needle Park (1971), Play It as It Lays (1972, based on her novel), A Star Is Born (1981), and Up Close and Personal (1996). A second book of essays, The White Album, was published in 1979 about life in the late 1960s and the 1970s. Her fascination with America’s relations with its southern neighbors could be seen in Salvador (1983) and Miami (1987). Political Fictions (2001) focuses on her thoughts on American politics and gov- ernment. -

Joan Didion and "Company": a Response to John Whalen-Bridge*
Connotations Vo!. 6.2 (1996/97) Joan Didion and "Company": A Response to John Whalen-Bridge* GORDON O. TAYLOR "TO BE CONTINUED" are the last words on the final page of Norman Mailer's long novel Harlot's Ghost. The ending is thus rendered problematic even beyond the author's characteristic ambiguities of outlook. But the phrase-as noted in John Whalen-Bridge's fine essay-resonates as well with questions regarding"Adamic" tradition as it plays into Mailer's later work, and as it persists (covertly or otherwise) in contemporary American writing more broadly surveyed. Professor Whalen-Bridge, in his introductory and concluding remarks to "The Myth of the American Adam in Late Mailer," stresses the issue of "American Exceptionalism" with a view to defending Mailer's recent work a-Iarlot's Ghost in particular) against accusations of such heresy. Fair enough, to be sure, so far as it is true that authors in the "classic" American tradition have tended toward reflex refusal to recognize the political dimension of identity and experience as a primary force in American social and cultural dynamics. But in the main body of his discussion, while he persuasively maintains the continuity of his argument that Mailer "declares the futility of any search for 'a virgin land' or 'a world elsewhere' beyond political consequences" (to whatever extent "classic" American writers claim the reverse), Whalen-Bridge also considers Harlot's Ghost in a range of other interesting terms inviting a different order of response. American literary "continuations" of more than one sort, fanning out through the work of more than one author, are suggested by his discussion. -
