It places them in the context of the current growing popularity of crime fiction as a literary genre and their place in the literary history of their respective countries; in France, the Roman Noir and in Italy, the Gailla. It discusses in particular the key elements in their crime fiction which differentiates it from other contemporary European crime writers, particularly from Scandinavia. -

“where a good crime C r i m e can be had by all” c h r o n i c l e Issue #246 july 2006 BOOKS & DVDS A number of books have TV series adapted from them. Here is a selection from our shelves: ANDREA CAMILLERI Inspector Salvo Montalbano is the fictional creation of Sicilian writer Andrea Camilleri. Montalbano’s character and manner encapsulate much of Sicilian mythology – brooding philosophy, whip-smart dialogue, rugged beauty, superb food and of course astute detective work! I can heartily recommend both the books and the TV series (in Italian with English subtitles, and starring Luca Zingaretti): Books The Shape of Water, The Snack Thief, The Terracotta Dog, The Voice of the Violin (all Pb 19.95), Excursion to Tindari (Tp 30.00) and The Smell of the Night (Pb 27.00). DVDs Volume 1: Terracotta Dog, Shape of Water, Snack Thief, Voice of the Violin and Artist’s Touch (3-DVD set 49.95) Volume 2: A Trip to Tindari, The Sense of Touch, Montalbano’s Croquettes, The Scent of the Night and The Goldfinch and the Cat (3-DVD set 49.95) CAROLINE GRAHAM Nothing is what it seems behind the well-trimmed hedges of the picturesque cottages in the idyllic English countryside of Midsomer, as Inspector Barnaby and Sergeant Troy soon discover. John Nettles stars as Inspector Barnaby and again I can recommend both the books and the TV series. Books Death of a Hollow Man, Death in Disguise, Faithful Unto Death, A Ghost in the Machine, The Killings at Badger’s Drift, A Place of Safety and Written in Blood (all Pb 18.95). -
Pan Macmillan August 2020 Highlights Local Sermons of Soul Iman Rappetti
Pan Macmillan August 2020 Highlights Local Sermons of Soul Iman Rappetti Sermons of Soul brings you the best-loved opening segments from Iman Rappetti’s award-winning radio show, POWER Talk. With each daily sermon, Iman sought to reach out to her listeners and give them something special before the day’s tough subjects unfolded on the programme. She wanted to create a moment for them to feel appreciated, thought of, challenged or cared for. Some days the sermon was a motivational letter, encouraging listeners to stay strong and confident, to have hope for themselves and the country. On other days it was different – a call to action, a sociopolitical critique, a powerfully moving assessment of how we were doing as a society. These few minutes became one of the most-listened-to segments in radio, so popular that people frequently called in to comment on the impact of the messages or stopped Iman in the street to talk about them. More than once, the sermons have been called life changing. Reading Iman’s labour of love will remind you of important issues at the same time as it will encourage and inspire you. • ISBN: 9781770106864 • Format: Trade Paperback • Genre: Non-Fiction • Extent: 296 • Price: R290.00 HARDBACK FICTION Wild Kristin Hannah From the New York Times number one bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone, Kristin Hannah, comes Wild, a remarkable story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the promise of new beginnings. Chapter 1 Leonardo Sciascia
DENOUNCEMENT, ENGAGEMENT AND DIALECT: THE SICILIAN MYSTERY NOVELS OF LEONARDO SCIASCIA AND ANDREA CAMILLERI by Jennifer Holt A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School–New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Italian Written under the direction of Professor David Marsh And approved by ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ _________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey January, 2010 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Denouncement, Engagement and Dialect: The Sicilian Mystery Novels of Leonardo Sciascia and Andrea Camilleri By JENNIFER HOLT Dissertation Director: Professor David Marsh The genre of the mystery novel offers an ideal medium to analyze social injustice. The guise of criminal investigations allows for an examination of deviant behavior across diverse social strata and its causes and effects upon modern society. In theory, institutional justice in Italy extends equal rights and treatment to all citizens, irrespective of social standing or political affiliation. However, an analysis of criminal activity and the manner in which it is investigated and prosecuted reveals that this principle does not always hold true. These crimes-- each a labyrinth of social and political connections, the daunting task of exposing those responsible and bringing them to justice within the framework of the legal system-- constitute the plot of the Sicilian mystery novel. Despite the valiant and occasionally successful efforts of an investigator to solve these crimes, it is impossible to prosecute the guilty parties within the framework of the legal system. This break of the Sicilian mystery novel with the tradition of the genre prompted Italo Calvino to comment on “…the impossibility of the mystery novel within a ii Sicilian context” (Calvino, Foreword. -

Pan Macmillan September 2020 Highlights LOCAL All Rise A Judicial Memoir Dikgang Moseneke Law as a profession was not Dikgang Moseneke’s first choice. As a small boy he told his aunt that he wanted to be a traffic officer, but life had other plans for him. At the young age of 15, he was imprisoned for participating in antiapartheid activities. During his ten years of incarceration, he completed his schooling by correspondence and earned two university degrees. Afterwards he studied law at the University of South Africa. All Rise covers his years on the bench, with particular focus on his 15-year term as a judge at South Africa’s apex court, the Constitutional Court, including as the deputy chief justice. As a member of the team that drafted the interim Constitution, Moseneke was well placed to become one of the guardians of its final form. His insights into the Constitutional Court’s structures, the personalities peopling it, the values it embodies, the human dramas that shook it and the cases that were brought to it make for fascinating reading. All Rise offers a unique, insider’s view of how the judicial system operates at its best and how it responds when it is under fire. From the Constitutional Court of Arthur Chaskalson to the Mogoeng Mogoeng era, Moseneke’s understated but astute commentary is a reflection on the country’s ongoing but not altogether comfortable journey to a better life for all. • ISBN: TPB - 9781770105355 • ISBN: HB - 9781770106666 • Format: Trade Paperback • Genre: Non-Fiction • Extent: TBC • TPB Price: R310,00 HB: R399,00 Last Survivor Tony Park Greed. -
