While Hanja character has its own morphemic base, Hangul being and Young-Bo Kim1 purely phonemic without morphemic base. These two, therefore, have substantially different outcomes as a language as well as different neural responses. That conclusion, which was reached for other reasons, is thus confirmed by the distribution of the modern dialects. Those addressed in this paper include specifically Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Tamil, and Telugu. I have used XHTML encoded in UTF-8 for the base version of this paper. Most of the XHTML file can be viewed if you are running Windows XP with all associated Indic font and rendering support, and the Arial Unicode MS font. For examples that require complex rendering in scripts not yet supported by this configuration, such as Bengali, Oriya, and Malayalam, I have used non- Unicode fonts supplied with Gamma's Unitype. To view all fonts as intended without the above you can view the PDF file whose URL is given above. Although the Indic scripts are often described as similar, there is a large amount of variation at the detailed implementation level. To provide a detailed account of how each Indic script implements particular features on a letter by letter basis would require too much time and space for the task at hand. Nevertheless, despite the detail variations, the basic mechanisms are to a large extent the same, and at the general level there is a great deal of similarity between these scripts. It is certainly possible to structure a discussion of the relevant features along the same lines for each of the scripts in the set. -

First, the place of writing among the various systems of human inter communication is discussed. This is followed by four Tchapters devoted to the descriptive and comparative treatment of the various types of writing in the world. The sixth chapter deals with the evolution of writing from the earliest stages of picture writing to a full alphabet. The next four chapters deal with general problems, such as the future of writing and the relationship of writing to speech, art, and religion. Of the two final chapters, one contains the first attempt to establish a full terminology of writing, the other an extensive bibliography. The aim of this study is to lay a foundation for a new science of writing which might be called grammatology. While the general histories of writing treat individual writings mainly from a descriptive-historical point of view, the new science attempts to establish general principles governing the use and evolution of writing on a comparative-typological basis. -
The Gurmukhi Astrolabe of the Maharaja of Patiala
Indian Journal of History of Science, 47.1 (2012) 63-92 THE GURMUKHI ASTROLABE OF THE MAHARAJA OF PATIALA SREERAMULA RAJESWARA SARMA* (Received 14 August 2011; revised 23 January 2012) Even though the telescope was widely in use in India, the production of naked eye observational instruments continued throughout the nineteenth century. In Punjab, in particular, several instrument makers produced astrolabes, celestial globes and other instruments of observation, some inscribed in Sanskrit, some in Persian and yet some others in English. A new feature was the production of instruments with legends in Punjabi language and Gurmukhi script. Three such instruments are known so far. One of these is a splendid astrolabe produced for the Maharaja of Patiala in 1850. This paper offers a full technical description of this Gurmukhi astrolabe and discusses the geographical and astrological data engraved on it. Attention is drawn to the similarities and differences between this astrolabe and the other astrolabes produced in India. BrahmiNet-ITRANS Transliteration Scheme Anoop Kunchukuttan August 2020 The BrahmiNet-ITRANS notation (Kunchukuttan et al., 2015) provides a scheme for transcription of major Indian scripts in Roman, using ASCII characters. It extends the ITRANS1 transliteration scheme to cover characters not covered in the original scheme. Tables 1a shows the ITRANS mappings for vowels and diacritics (matras). Table 1b shows the ITRANS mappings for consonants. These tables also show the Unicode offset for each character. By Unicode offset, we mean the offset of the character in the Unicode range assigned to the script. For Indic scripts, logically equivalent characters are assigned the same offset in their respective Unicode codepoint ranges. The Death of Sanskrit* SHELDON POLLOCK University of Chicago “Toutes les civilisations sont mortelles” (Paul Valéry) In the age of Hindu identity politics (Hindutva) inaugurated in the 1990s by the ascendancy of the Indian People’s Party (Bharatiya Janata Party) and its ideo- logical auxiliary, the World Hindu Council (Vishwa Hindu Parishad), Indian cultural and religious nationalism has been promulgating ever more distorted images of India’s past. Few things are as central to this revisionism as Sanskrit, the dominant culture language of precolonial southern Asia outside the Per- sianate order. Hindutva propagandists have sought to show, for example, that Sanskrit was indigenous to India, and they purport to decipher Indus Valley seals to prove its presence two millennia before it actually came into existence. In a farcical repetition of Romantic myths of primevality, Sanskrit is consid- ered—according to the characteristic hyperbole of the VHP—the source and sole preserver of world culture. The state’s anxiety both about Sanskrit’s role in shaping the historical identity of the Hindu nation and about its contempo- rary vitality has manifested itself in substantial new funding for Sanskrit edu- cation, and in the declaration of 1999–2000 as the “Year of Sanskrit,” with plans for conversation camps, debate and essay competitions, drama festivals, and the like.1 This anxiety has a longer and rather melancholy history in independent In- dia, far antedating the rise of the BJP. Sanskrit was introduced into the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India (1949) as a recognized language of the new State of India, ensuring it all the benefits accorded the other fourteen (now seventeen) spoken languages listed. -

Unlike earlier scholarly proposals, the language of this folio can- not be Tocharian, nor can it be Sanskrit or Middle Indic (Gāndhārī). Instead, it is proposed that the folio is written in an Iranian language of the Khotanese-Tumšuqese type. Several readings are proposed, but a full transcription, let alone a full translation, is not possible at this point, and the results must consequently remain provisional.
