CATHOLIC BURIAL -Sacred Heart Cemetery, 605-225-7065 August 30, 2020 With both major political party nominating conventions in the "books" I suppose it is high time for me to talk politics. Buckle From the Pastor up, Sacred Heart!

I am a registered Independent, though, as of late, I lean more and more to the "Apathetic" party. You've never heard of the Apathetic party? No surprise, it isn't a real Ameri- can political party but just my own little joke about our political climate and my response to it.

Back when I was a seminarian, studying to be a priest, I had dinner with some priests. One of them, a retired priest, asked me: "Are you a liberal or a conservative?" I responded, "I try to think with the mind of Christ and love with the heart of Christ." My response didn't make him happy. He wanted to pin me down to one or the other so he would know how to deal with me.

I still try to keep the same realities at play in my life. To think with the mind of Christ and to love with the heart of Christ. The two don't have to be contradictory.

Our Catholic patrimony has a lot to say about how a society should be ordered. This is called "Catholic Social Teaching." The Church's vision of a society ordered after the heart and mind of Christ would speak words of cor- rection to both Donkeys and Elephants. If you favor one more than the other are you willing to listen to what the Church teaches to your party or are you just looking for how the Church corrects your political opponent?

"Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your broth- er’s eye." Jesus' words in Matthew 7:5.
