ST LUCIA’S DAY 13th, 2020 | Scandinavian Countries On this day known as the Festival of Lights, girls dress up in white gowns with red sashes and wreaths of candles on their heads to honor Saint Lucia. The celebration is meant to bring hope and light during the darkest time of the year. The girls serve food and drink to family and friends in the spirit of giving, as St Lucia did for people in her time. SHAB-E YALDA December 21st, 2020 | Iran and other Persian countries On the longest night of the year families in Iran come together to share a feast featuring fruit and nuts and then read the work of a Persian poet, Hafez. Family members ask a question about the upcoming year and choose a poem at random to be interpreted as an answer. FESTIVAL December 21st, 2020 | Countries across Asia In the wintertime on the longest night of the year families in many countries in Asia gather to celebrate ancestors and eat and (rice balls filled with bean paste) to keep warm. It is said that since dumplings are ear-shaped they protect the ears from the cold when you eat them. KWANZAA December 26th, 2020-January 1, 2021 | United States of America Kwanzaa is a celebration of community, strength, and unity celebrated by African Americans. Each of 7 days celebrates one of the following values that will be focused on for the year: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith. Celebrations feature candle lightings, readings, and sharing food with friends and family. MEDIA NOCHE December 31st, 2020 | The Philippines On New Year’s Eve Filipino families and friends cook delicious meals to be eaten at midnight as the new year begins. Meals include 12 types of round fruits to bring in good luck and prosperity for each month of the coming year. Pancit noodles are also served to symbolize long life. NEW YEAR’S EVE December 31st, 2020 | Around the World In the United States New Year’s Eve celebrations include fireworks, parties with friends, and staying up until midnight to celebrate the first moments of the new year together. At Time Square in New York City all eyes are on the New Year’s Eve ball as it drops during the countdown to midnight. The ceremony is televised across the world for all to see. January 13th, 2021 | Punjab, Lohri is a holiday celebrated in Punjab, India on the longest night of the year. It celebrates the arrival of longer days after the winter . Celebrations include drumming, kite flying, food, and a fire that burns all night long.
