Cannatella3 and Jianping Jiang1 Abstract Background: Species richness and composition pattern of amphibians along elevation gradients in eastern Nepal Himalaya are rarely investigated. This is a frst ever study in the Himalayan elevation gradient, the world’s highest mountain range and are highly sensitive to the efects of recent global changes. The aim of the present study was to assess amphibian community structure along elevation gradients and identify the potential drivers that regulate community structures. Amphibian assemblages were sampled within 3 months in both 2014 and 2015 (from May to July) using nocturnal time constrained and acoustic aids visual encounter surveys. In total, 79 transects between 78 and 4200 m asl were sampled within 2 years feld work. A combination of polynomial regression, generalized linear models, hierarchical partitioning and canonical correspondence analysis were used to determine the efects of eleva- tion and environmental variables on species richness, abundance, and composition of amphibian communities. Results: Species richness and abundance declined linearly with increasing elevation, which did not support the Mid- Domain Model. Among all the environmental variables, elevation, surface area and humidity were the best predictors of species richness, abundance and composition of amphibians. The majority of amphibian species had narrow eleva- tion ranges. There was no signifcant correlation between species range size and elevation gradients. -

ABSTRACT The paper deals with the background and the establishment of a Developmental Biol- ogy Laboratory in Utkal University in Odisha state. It describes the process from a humble begin- ning with limited facilities into a leading research centre, initially for amphibians and later for the endangered olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) turtle. Starting from the biology, reproduction and development in many anurans, the laboratory took up research on regeneration, especially on super-regeneration in tadpoles under the influence of morphogens such as vitamin A (retinoids). Treatment with vitamin A after amputation of the tail inhibited tail regeneration but unexpectedly induced homeotic transformation of tails into limbs in many anurans, starting with the marbled balloon frog Uperodon systoma. This was the first observation of homeotic transformation in any vertebrate. The laboratory continues research on histological and molecular aspects of this phenom- enon. In addition, taking advantage of the largest rookery of olive ridley sea turtles in Gahirmatha, in the same state the laboratory has contributed significantly to the biology, breeding patterns, development and especially the temperature-dependent sex determination phenomenon (TSD). This research was extended to biochemical and ultrastructural aspects during development for the first time for any sea turtle. The laboratory has contributed significantly to the conservation of olive ridleys as well as the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). Recognition and awards for the laboratory have been received from both national and international bodies. -

BIAWAK Journal of Varanid Biology and Husbandry Volume 11 Number 1 ISSN: 1936-296X On the Cover: Varanus douarrha The individuals depicted on the cover and inset of this issue represent a recently redescribed species of monitor lizard, Varanus douarrha (Lesson, 1830), which origi- nates from New Ireland, in the Bismark Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. Although originally discovered and described by René Lesson in 1830, the holotype was lost on its way to France when the ship it was traveling on became shipwrecked at the Cape of Good Hope. Since then, without a holotype for comparitive studies, it has been assumed that the monitors on New Ireland repre- sented V. indicus or V. finschi. Recent field investiga- tions by Valter Weijola in New Ireland and the Bismark Archipelago and phylogenetic analyses of recently col- lected specimens have reaffirmed Lesson’s original clas- sification of this animal as a distinct species. The V. douarrha depicted here were photographed by Valter Weijola on 17 July and 9 August 2012 near Fis- soa on the northern coast of New Ireland. Furthermore, we extend the known Paraguayan range of the former species by providing the first departmental records for Paraguarí and Guairá. urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub: 52FBED11-A8A2-4A0E-B746-FD847BF94881 The possibility of commensal relationships between certain New World microhylid frogs and predatory ground spiders of the families THERAPHOSIDAE Thorell, 1869 and CTENIDAE Keyserling, 1877 was first alluded to by Blair (1936) who made brief remarks on the burrow-sharing relationship between Gastrophryne olivacea and Aphonopelma hentzi (THERAPHOSIDAE) in the southern prairies of North America, and this was further expanded upon by Hunt (1980), Dundee (1999) and Dundee et al. (2012). These authors noted that the frogs clearly benefitted from the presence of the spider with reduced predation, but were unable to determine any benefit for the spider. The phenomenon was later documented in the Neotropics, with a similar relationship between microhylid frogs (Chiasmocleis ventrimaculata and Hamptophryne boliviana) and the spider Xenesthis immanis reported from Peru (Cocroft & Hambler 1989; Csakany 2002; Miller 2003) and the former with Pamphobeteus sp. -

(Accepted: June 25, 2018) ABSTRACT A survey was carried out to document the amphibian diversity at Takdah Cantonment (27°02’N-88°21’E) in Kurseong Subdivision of District Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, an integral part of the Eastern Himalayas. Time constrained visual encounter survey (VES) method was used for sampling amphibians from all possible habitats of the study area. A total of nine species of amphibians belonging to four families across five genera were recorded during the study. Polypedates himalayanus was also for the first time recorded from Darjee- ling Hills. This study reveals that the area which is at an elevation of 1440-1650m is rich in amphibian diver- sity. Further studies are needed on population structure, habitat use by amphibians for better understanding and also imposition of several conservation strategies in Darjeeling district of West Bengal is needed. Interestingly, subsequent studies have recognized another morphologically similar species, J. tricarinata, from the same locality in Tibet based on photographic evidence only. Despite these reports, no studies have examined the referred specimens for either record to confirm their taxonomic identifications with robust comparisons to congener species. Here, we examine the referred specimen of the record of J. kumaonensis from southeastern Tibet, China; recently collected specimens from the same locality in southeastern Tibet; type specimens; and topotypic specimens of both J. kumaonensis and J. tricarinata, to clarify the taxonomic identity of the focal population from southeastern Tibet, China. -
