Craigmillar hosts national conference

CRAIGMILLAR RECENTLY PLAYED host to a national learning centre con- ference, which attracted over 80 dele- gates from as far afield as Shetland and the Hebrides. The event was organised by local e- learning consultancy Cityconnect Ltd, and was held in conjunction with the Big Lottery Fund and the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA), who work with the government to develop the use of new technologies for schools and other train- ing providers. The conference - ‘Planning For The Future - Some Options For Learning Centres In Scotland’ - was held mainly at the Hays Business Centre, with neigh- bouring learning/IT centre Haywired also being used for workshops. Introduced by City of Edinburgh Council’s David Hillson, the confer- ence’s central themes were ‘Community The conference attracted learning sector delegates from all over Scotland CEP’s Mac Wilkinson’s workshop presentation Planning’ and ‘e-Government Agendas’. Delegates went on to participate in a sequence of lively and useful workshops, including those taken by Chris Swaine of BECTA, Pete McDougall of Cityconnect, and Mac Wilkinson of the Craigmillar European Programme. Big Lottery Fund’s Philip Davies said: “This has been a wonderful opportunity for practitioners to share knowledge and ideas. Craigmillar and the facilities here have really made the conference go with a swing.” Cityconnect Director of Community Initiatives Pete McDougall said: “Digital inclusion, the internet and computers present us with an opportunity to ensure that all citizens can have a voice and are able to participate in the fast changing world that we all now live in.” He added: “The ability to communicate, learn and participate in a digital age is of tremendous importance for the future of our communities.” Further details on the conference, all of the presentations, and a wealth of free useful online resources are available at www.cityconnect.cc.
