You do not have to be a professional singer or worship leader of a church to lead campfire, chapel, worship or devotional songs. Use simple, deliberate up-and-down motions with one or both hands to fit the beat or the words. With practice, you can develop a style as your own. Hold the song book, song sheet or booklet where you can see your audience over the top of the song selections. Projection is key, and do not look down! If you have a sound system with microphone, then hold the microphone close to your mouth, while you are singing, so you can be heard. (And smile!) For the first song that you lead, choose one that is simple and well-known by the group. Try an old favorite as a warm-up. Select your songs in ad- vance and be sure you know them well enough to teach them with ease. Set the pitch for songs by humming or singing the first few bars. Get the correct pitch and the whole group will sing easily. If you pitch your song to high or too low, stop the song, get the correct pitch and star over. A pitch pipe or tuning fork (key of C) is a great tool for this purpose. They are available at most music stores. Loud singing in good spirit is fine, but a group shouting a song to make noise will soon get out of control. It is best not to ask the group what song they would like to sing unless it is a “request-only service.” You will receive too many suggestions and may become confused. Be enthusiastic and wear a smile as you lead songs. The way you feel will soon catch on with the group you are leading. To teach a song, sing it through a couple of times so your audience will have a chance to learn the words and tune. Then try quietly singing it together so everyone will get the feel of it. Then sing it with a faster beat at normal volume. Open meetings, campfires, songfests or worship/chapel services with an up- beat or group participation song. Close with songs that have an inspiration- al flavor. Lasting impressions will be made as young people sing a favorite closing song. Worship/Chapel services provide should be concluded with a closing-type hymn or inspirational praise song. Scripture and Inspirational Reading Song leading requires preparation and rehearsal, and the same is true for scripture and inspirational reading. For any inspirational reading, selection is just one aspect of the process. Review the reading(s) prior to the chapel/ worship service. Make sure you know the material well prior to the event. Psalms and Proverbs are good choices for a chapel service or meditative portion of a campfire. Standing before the group, keep your Bible (or other text) just below eye level. This will allow you to see the reading and see your audience. As stated above, projection is key, and remember do not look down. Read loud enough to be heard. If you have a sound system with a microphone, hold the microphone up, and keep the microphone close to your mouth while you are reading or speaking so that you can be heard. One of the keys of reading scripture is to purposely read slowly and deliberately. This way your audience will have a chance to listen and understand the reading. And, as you would while singing, do not forget to smile! Our hearts in Christian love; I once was lost but now am found, The fellowship of kindred minds Was blind, but now I see. Is like to that above. T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear. Before our Father’s throne And Grace, my fears relieved. We pour our ardent prayers; How precious did that Grace appear Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one The hour I first believed. Our comforts and our cares. Through many dangers, toils and snares We share each other’s woes, I have already come; Our mutual burdens bear; ‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far And often for each other flows and Grace will lead me home. The sympathizing tear. The Lord has promised good to me. When we asunder part, His word my hope secures. It gives us inward pain; He will my shield and portion be, But we shall still be joined in heart, As long as life endures. And hope to meet again. When we’ve been there ten thousand years From sorrow, toil and pain, Bright shining as the sun. And sin, we shall be free, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise And perfect love and friendship reign Than when we’d first begun.
