H.D., Daughter of Helen: Mythology as Actuality Abstract For H.D., classical mythology was an essential means of expression, first acquired in childhood and repossessed throughout her life. H.D.’s extensive output of poems, memoirs, and novels is marked by a pervasive Hellenism which evolved in response to the changing conditions of her life and art, but remained her constant idiom. She saw herself as reliving myth, and she used myth as a medium through which to order her own experience and to rethink inherited ideas. If myth served H.D. as a resource for self-understanding and artistic expression, H.D. herself has served subsequent poets, critics, and scholars as a model for the writer’s ability to reclaim myth, to create something new and personal out of ancient shared traditions. The aim of this monumental study is not only to contextualise Greek letter writing betWEEn 600 and 150 BC within communicative practices, but also to look at docu- mentary letters and letters Embedded in a narrative. An important part of Ceccarelli’s bibliography focusEs on lEttErs of the Classical and HEllEnistic period. ThE book starts with discussing somE problems related with ancient epistolography, such as typology of lEttErs, or anciEnt GrEEk tErminology (p. 1-19). ThE author points out in thE sEcond chapter (p. 23-58) that letter writing, as a communication across a spatial distance was not among thE earliest uses of Greek writing. Examining thE oldEst extant documEn- tary letters (she counts 42 letters that have been preserved), the author arguEs that for thE fifth and EvEn partly thE fourth cEntury BC it is impossible to spEak of a codified epistolary style. A survey of (contemporary) curses shows the original affinity between both curses and letters. In the next chaptEr (p. 59-99), CEccarElli analysEs thE traditions on the invEntion of writing. The early narratives that represent writing as an import from outside the GreEk World, did not focus on the function of this new art, whereas the traditions that attributed the invEntion to a Greek hEro, pointed to the ability of the written word to preservE information or to its potential for creativity. FurthEr, the author goes on to discuss storiEs that date from the classical pEriod and deal With the difficultiEs of Epistolary communication. -

Find out some of the famous Greek myths flower inspired. Find out how feelings and passions were mixed together with flowers to make wonderful stories still famous in nowadays. Anemone:The name of the plant is directly linked to the well known ancient erotic myth of Adonis and Aphrodite (Venus). It has been inspired great poets like Ovidius or, much later, Shakespeare, to compose hymns dedicated to love. According to this myth, while Adonis was hunting in the forest, the ex- lover of Aphrodite, Ares, disguised himself as a wild boar and attacked Adonis causing him lethal injuries. Aphrodite heard the groans of Adonis and rushed to him, but it was too late. Aphrodite got in her arms the lifeless body of her beloved Adonis and it is said the she used nectar in order to spray the wood. The mixture of the nectar and blood sprang a beautiful flower. However, the life of this 1 beautiful flower doesn’t not last. When the wind blows, makes the buds of the plant to bloom and then drifted away. This flower is called Anemone because the wind helps the flowering and its decline. Adonis:It would be an omission if we do not mention that there is a flower named Adonis, which has medicinal properties. According to the myth, this flower is familiar to us as poppy meadows with the beautiful red colour. (Adonis blood). Iris: The flower got its name from the Greek goddess Iris, goddess of the rainbow. -

U.S. Postal Service Mail Addressing Guidelines Address Placement Placement of the address on the face of an envelope should conform to the following U. S. Postal Service specifications. • The address should be in an area, one inch from each side of the envelope. • The top of the address should be no more than 2 3/4 inches from the bottom of the envelope and the bottom no more than 5/8's of an inch from the bottom of the envelope. • The area 4 1/2 inches by 5/8 's of an inch in the lower right hand corner of the envelope MUST remain empty for bar code placement for any maul that is processed by the Mail Center. Enclosures Correspondence Mail of any kind for transport by the U. S. Postal Service must be enclosed in an appropriate envelope or parcel and sealed. The type of enclosures determine the mailing classification. Non-mailables Several items are listed by the U. S. Postal Service as non-mailable in envelopes: • paper clips • metal pieces • glass, chips • sand. These can jam or damage the mailing machines and can cause serious injury to Mail Center and Postal employees. The following are also classified as non-mailables and subject to return to sender: envelopes and cards less than 3 1/2 inches in height or 5 inches in length. It is recommended that when mailing questionable items to U. S. or foreign destinations, the mailer should contact the Mail Center for assistance. All foreign countries also impose various restrictions. Brochures, letters and newsletters being mailed without an envelope must be folded consistently and must be tabbed with the recommended number of tabs. -

Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological. -
The Demographics and Production of Black Poetry
Syllabus Week 1: The Demographics and Production of Black Poetry Resident Faculty: Howard Rambsy Visiting Faculty: James Smethurst, Kathy Lou Schultz, Tyehimba Jess, Brenda Marie Osbey Led by Rambsy, the Week 1 readings, activities and lectures will address significant recurring topics in the discourse on African American poetry—black aesthetics, history, cultural pride, critiques of anti-black racism, music and performance—and concentrate on major trends, popular poets and canonical poems and genres. We will identify and discuss several major poets, including Amiri Baraka, Jayne Cortez, Nikki Giovanni, Carolyn Rodgers, and Dudley Randall whose works began circulating widely during the late 1960s and early 1970s. We will consider how the BAM intersects with and distinguishes itself from other related poetry movements like the Beat Generation. We look at the configuration of contemporary black poetry, as poets become identified by subject matter, region, movement and/or collective like Cave Canem Poets, the Affrilachian Poets, and the National Poetry Slam Movement that began in 1990. Rambsy, Kathy Lou Schultz, Smethurst and Graham will give lectures that provide NEH Summer Scholars with an overarching sense of poets in the field as well as major events and circumstances that have shaped African American poetry. As specialists who have written about poetry and literary history, Rambsy, Schultz, and Smethurst will collectively provide foundational concepts and material for understanding and teaching black poetry. The week will also include discussions and readings by poets Tyehimba Jess and Brenda Marie Osbey, which will give NEH Summer Scholars chances to consider persona poetry and the presence of history in contemporary poems. -

The Purported Letter of Darius to Gadates
THE PURPORTED LETTER OF DARIUS TO GADATES This letter, which was found inscribed on a marble corner-block from a wall at Deirmendjik on the road from Magnesia on the Maeander to Tralles, has been accepted by most scholars as a genuine translation into Greek from a Persian original'). Some have, however, doubted its authenticity, most thoroughly M. v. 2 den Hout ). I accept his opinion, but what in my opinion is the strongest case for regarding the letter as a forgery is the fact that during Darius' reign the greatest sanctuary of Apollo in Asia Minor, the temple at Didyma, was burnt down by 3 Xerxes ). This fact corresponds very badlr with the traditional Persian religious toleration and especially with I. 28-29 0 the letter: ö,; llEQom,; dm: [nä]oav Cl'tQExE[L]av xaL ']:1). So the problem and subject of this paper is: Who wrote the original version of this letter which contains so strong an irony of Darius and Xerxes and their attitude towards Apollo? What the editors have uttered as ex planation of the conflagration and the inconsistency with the above mentioned lines of the letter does not convince me'). The suggestions made by some scholars that JtEL8aQXELv e. gen. of I. 5-8 and the word Cl'tQExE[L]av of I. 29 could imply an older Ionic text as the original are S convincingly refuted by van den Hout ). During these two decades, the people turned to radio as their form of “escape” allowing them to forget about the events happening around them. Radio culture in America began to explode with nearly twenty-eight million households owning a radio by the end of 1939. Franklin Delano Roosevelt utilized this technology to reach out to the American people and discuss the events occurring not only around the world but also in their bacKyards. Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. -

I I I: Briseis. to Achilles The character of Briseis is derived by Ovid from the Iliad. In that soQrce, however, the character of Briseis is scarcely developed and she is little more than a pivot around which the fabled wrath of Achilles is devdpped. While she may have been loved by Achilles in Homer's account, we should also note that for him the loss ofBriseis must surely have been perceived as an insult of the. gravest propor tions. We know very litde about Briseis and the charms she might have had in the eyes of Achilles; we only know that upon losing her Achilles retired from combat to his tent. In the Heroides, Briseis becomes a woman richly endowed with human feeling who grieves that she has not been reunited with the man she. loves, who fears that she will be supplanted by another, and who must now find her future life with those who destroyed her homeland, her family and her heritage. For Briseis the attraction identified u love is dangerously close to the fear of abandonment. She does not object so much to captivity as to the uncer~ty and instability that it has brought into her life. In this, Briseis echoes a theme which permeates the Heroidts: the lover and the beloved both seek to bring into their .lives a degree of permanence and changelessness that in reality is nearly impossible of attainment. But the situation of Bri~eis is still more tenuous. She is not only a pawn in a mysterious game being played out by characters superior to her in every way but she is also a barbarian. -
