One red species, Corallium bathyrubrum sp. nov., and one white species, C. bayeri sp. nov., are described. Corallium bathyrubrum is the first red Corallium to be reported from the western Atlantic. An additional species, C. niobe Bayer, 1964 originally described from the Straits of Florida, was also collected and its description augmented. -

Morrow and Cárdenas Frontiers in Zoology (2015) 12:7 DOI 10.1186/s12983-015-0099-8 DEBATE Open Access Proposal for a revised classification of the Demospongiae (Porifera) Christine Morrow1 and Paco Cárdenas2,3* Abstract Background: Demospongiae is the largest sponge class including 81% of all living sponges with nearly 7,000 species worldwide. Systema Porifera (2002) was the result of a large international collaboration to update the Demospongiae higher taxa classification, essentially based on morphological data. Since then, an increasing number of molecular phylogenetic studies have considerably shaken this taxonomic framework, with numerous polyphyletic groups revealed or confirmed and new clades discovered. And yet, despite a few taxonomical changes, the overall framework of the Systema Porifera classification still stands and is used as it is by the scientific community. This has led to a widening phylogeny/classification gap which creates biases and inconsistencies for the many end-users of this classification and ultimately impedes our understanding of today’s marine ecosystems and evolutionary processes. In an attempt to bridge this phylogeny/classification gap, we propose to officially revise the higher taxa Demospongiae classification. Discussion: We propose a revision of the Demospongiae higher taxa classification, essentially based on molecular data of the last ten years. We recommend the use of three subclasses: Verongimorpha, Keratosa and Heteroscleromorpha. We retain seven (Agelasida, Chondrosiida, Dendroceratida, Dictyoceratida, Haplosclerida, Poecilosclerida, Verongiida) of the 13 orders from Systema Porifera. We recommend the abandonment of five order names (Hadromerida, Halichondrida, Halisarcida, lithistids, Verticillitida) and resurrect or upgrade six order names (Axinellida, Merliida, Spongillida, Sphaerocladina, Suberitida, Tetractinellida). Finally, we create seven new orders (Bubarida, Desmacellida, Polymastiida, Scopalinida, Clionaida, Tethyida, Trachycladida). -

A map of the spacing unit is attached as Exhibit A, and a tabulation of tracts therein is attached as Exhibit B. The Well is presently owned and operated by Talisman Energy USA Inc. (ATalisman@ or Athe well operator@). 2. In accordance with ECL 23-0901(3), the matter of integration of interests within the spacing unit was heard before the Department on January 9, 2007, at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, 625 Broadway, Room PA-129, Albany, New York 12233 (Acompulsory integration hearing@). The affidavit of publication attached as Exhibit C attests that notice of this hearing was provided pursuant to ECL 23-0901(3)(c) and DEC Program Policy DMN-1. 3. They will help you give explicit instructions to your students and help you create rubrics most appropriate for your class. Procedures: 1. Optional Previous Night’s Homework: The students should briefly research the Middle Ages (6th to the 16th Centuries / about 500 A.D. to about 1500 A.D.) with a focus on the history of the Roman numerical system. Roman Numerals were the primary numerical system of Europe during that time. 2. As a follow up to the Previous Night’s Homework, students should discuss their findings in small groups and read the Historical Background component for Leonardo Pisano Bigollo. 3. From the Historical Background, the students should be able to map the progression of numerical calculations of the early 1200s as introduced to Europe by Leonardo Pisano Bigollo also known in later years as “Leonardo Fibonacci.” 4. -

Italian Culture Newsletter Number 22 A Virtual Train Journey along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome. Marie and I have made this journey on a number of occasions. In doing so we have either made the journey in a single day albeit with a change of train, usually at Genova. On other occasions, we have spent an evening or even a few days at Genova and/or at Livorno or Pisa. The journey described will involve more stops on the way but could be more interesting on that account. The trip begins in Ventimiglia where we stayed overnight on our last day of our last holiday in Italy. This had been occasioned by the French railway strike which prevented any trains from running from Ventimiglia to Nice on the day of our arrival from Rome into the city at the Italian- French border in Liguria. Our first visit to Ventimiglia was in 2006 when some Italian friends from Cuneo, due north of Ventimiglia, in Piemonte, met us at the rail station in Ventimiglia to take us for a short stay at their apartment in Nice. On that occasion we didn’t see much of the city except for part of the old medieval town, which now mostly is the home of many of the southerners from Naples, Calabria and Sicily who moved north seeking employment after WWII. The old town is perched high above the new city with its long sea-front promenade and railway station. Ventimiglia is the ancient Albium Intemelium, the capital of the Intemelii, a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until in 115 BC it was forced to submit to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus. -

MAGICAL AMULETS In Thai culture By Chris Jones of Thai-amulets.com There are four types of magical amulets in Thai culture. The term to describe these amulets as a whole is khawng-khlang, which may be translated as 'sacred, potent objects.' The first type is the khruang-rang, which means material substances transformed into stone or copper. These amulets will protect people if they are held in the mouth or on the body. They include khot, which are stones found in nature such as stone eggs or meteoric ores and various types of seeds found in jack-fruit and tamarind plants. These amulets are used mostly by poor people, since they depend upon being found freely rather than having to be bought. The second type is the phra-khruang, which are small statues or figurines of the Buddha which also protect the person or, if larger, a household. They may be cast from a mould or else be in the form of a votive tablet. These may be used to complete a vow – i.e. to thank the Buddha for a blessing – or else as a talisman carried around the neck. The third type is the khruang-pluk-sek. Pluk-sek means 'to arouse the potency of a person or object by means of a spell or incantation' so a khruang-pluk-sek is a more powerful form of amulet. Most of the spells used are incantations based on ancient Sanskrit verses – Sanskrit is known as Pali in Thailand. When the spells call for being written down, the Khmer (Cambodian) alphabet is used rather than Thai which is not considered to be suitable for magic.Khmer characters are believed to have runic qualities. -
