Everybody has a plan

Synopsis

EVERYBODY HAS A PLAN tells the story of Agustín, a man desperate to abandon what he gradually has come to feel is an unfulfilling existence after years of living in . Following the death of his identical twin brother Pedro, Agustín sets out to begin his life anew by assuming Pedro’s identity and returning to the mysterious Tigre Delta region where the brothers had spent their childhood. Soon after his homecoming, however, Agustín finds himself unwittingly embroiled in the deadly criminal underworld that his brother had been part of.

The film is set against the peculiar landscape of the Tigre Delta, a maze of islands and rivers that once served as a recreational playground for the Buenos Aires elite, where one can still find French- and English-style mansions flanking the Delta's waterways as reminders of its opulent past. But there are darker, more secluded corners deep within the wetlands where unwritten rules of conduct and codes of silence are enforced by those locals living outside the law. It is in these dangerous backwaters, which have always provided refuge for Argentina's outcasts and criminals, that Agustín faces a desperate fight for survival as he tries to reinvent himself and leave the past behind.

Director’s notes

The Tigre Delta

The story of “Everybody has a plan” mostly takes place in the peculiar landscapes of the Tigre Delta, which is, without a doubt, one of the main characters.

Tigre is one of the seven largest deltas in the world, and the only one that does not flow into the sea. It had its moment of glory during the middle of the XIX century when the train arrived, and that is still reflected nowadays in the amazing palaces, and French and English style manors that flank the rivers. As the years went by and cars became more common-place, the Tigre fell back into oblivion, although it never ceased to draw weekending “porteños”, it recovered its character as an ideal place to hide, both for common criminals and for those that were running from State terrorism.

The story behind “Everybody has a plan” was born, in great part, from the peculiarities of the Delta added to my childhood memories from when I used to visit on weekends, and some of the stories of those who lived, and live, on those islands.

Everybody has a plan

This film tells the story of a man who, having reached middle age, decides to leave everything he had built in his life behind, and embarks on a desperate and unconscious quest for a second chance. Our main character traipses along the rivers in search of something pending since his childhood, something that has determined his future as an adult and that he can no longer bear. In this new world, at the same time that he tries to appear to be someone else, he must find a way to fit in this small society that he has chosen as his own, in this community that has its own rules, such as pacts of silence and exile.

I have always been interested in working with the police noir genre, I myself am a product of a violent world from which I cannot escape and that, at times, seems to almost dazzle me; as if escaping from the system could generate a discovery, the creation of something so heart-rending that it does not cease to surprise, but also because it allows for the possibility of something different, or, at least, an attempt to find it.

Viggo Mortensen To Lead Ana Piterbarg's Directorial Debut, 'Everyone Has A Plan'

Viggo Mortesen is set to team with Argentinean writer-director Ana Piterbarg on a forthcoming project titled "Everyone Has A Plan."

Few details are currently known of the story though the script has already earned critical acclaim taking home the Julio Alejandro Screenplay Award and winning Piterbarg $50,000 at the 2008 Malaga Film Festival. The project will be Piterbarg's directorial debut after assistant directing on two smaller productions in Fernando Spiner's "Adiós Querida Luna" and Martín Rejtman's "The Magic Gloves."

"I'm going to be filming in Argentina in the coming year," Mortensen told Onetti. "It's a small film but interesting. It will be filmed in the capital and also in Tigre." Lensing is set to take place sometime in 2011 and will see the actor return to the South American country he lived in until the age of 11.

Haddock reels in Bortnik for 'Las Grietas'

By CHARLES NEWBERY

BUENOS AIRES - Argentina's Haddock Films is producing features with Viggo Mortensen and Aida Bortnik, building on its success with "The Secret in Their Eyes."

Mortensen will star in "Todos tenemos un plan" (Everybody Has a Plan), the freshman effort of Argentina's Ana Piterbarg that will lense in May 2011 in Tigre, a delta region on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. It is a police caper about a man who takes on the identity of his deceased twin brother.

Haddock will produce the estimated E2.5 million ($3.2 million) pic with Spain's Tornasol Films and Castafiore Films.

This is a bigger budget film for Argentina, where the average is $1.5 million. And it would be hard to finance without Mortensen in the lead, especially in an environment of tight credit and rising costs, Haddock topper Vanessa Ragone told Variety.

"In terms of costs, we couldn't finance without presales, and you need a name for presales," she said.

Bortnik ("The Official Story") has boarded "Las Grietas de Jara," a drama also to lense next year.

She will co-write with Julia Solomonoff, who will direct the $1.9 million pic as her third feature following "Sisters" and "The Last Summer of La Boyita" in 2005 and 2009.

It is about a middle-aged architect whose humdrum life is shaken up when a young woman comes inquiring about the disappearance of a man.

"Las Grietas" is based on a novel by Claudia Pineiro, whose previous novel "Las Viudas de los Jueves" was turned into last year's B.O. hit "Thursday's Widows" by Haddock, Tornasol and Castafiore.

"Bortnik brings experience and lots of ideas about characters" to the project, Ragone said. "She is one of only a few writers who can adapt the novel so that it is not just a literal transcription but so that it can stand on its own as a film."

Everybody has a plan
