Introduction Contemporary consultancy reports commissioned by PT Freeport Indonesia, a mining company whose operations directly impact Kamoro and Amungme communities, paint a rather bleak picture of the ability of the Kamoro to adapt to change. They tend to indicate that due to the “constraints” of their culture, the Kamoro passively resist the massive changes brought about by the pressures of contemporary “development” and “modernisation” (see for example LABAT- Anderson, Inc. 1997:3-2-6 and Dames & Moore 1997:120-122 ).1 This thesis examines in detail how the Kamoro people of the south-west coast of Papua (former Irian Jaya), Indonesia have adapted to major political and economic changes over a long history of interactions with outsiders. It is an ethnohistorical analysis of Kamoro sociality focused on their strategies of engagement. The basic theme underlying Kamoro sociality is a form of social reciprocity that I argue is symbolically embedded in conceptions of time, history, and ultimately understandings and constructions of reality. Kamoro narratives about the cultural heroes, the amoko-we, form a meaningful merger of this subject matter. Ultimately, narratives about the amoko-we, known as amoko-kwere, are primary mechanisms for Kamoro interpretation of and adaptation to change.2 Critical elements of Kamoro sociality central to this process of adaptation include the conspicuous incorporation of foreign elements into local systems of meaning and a rather pragmatic approach to power relationships. Both are reflected not only in observations of Kamoro practice, but also in amoko-kwere. Within local systems of meaning, “foreign” elements, including people, objects and abilities, are consistently reformulated as products of Kamoro agency. -

H. D. (Sandy) Ayer was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, in 1952 and grew up in the semi-wilderness of Kitimat, B.C., where he acquired his love of nature. Following his graduation from library school in 1984, he and his wife Diane moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, where Sandy began work as director of library services at Canadian Bible College/Canadian Theological Seminary. His interest in Alliance bibliography stems from his roles as institutional archivist and administrator of the library’s special collection in Allianceana and his love of collecting things. The 6' 8' author has the distinction of being perhaps the world’s tallest theological librarian. He and Diane have two children, Adam, 15, and Hannah, 12. Sandy reads to relax and birds for excitement. If he were ever to write another book, it would be about his experiences as a birder. FOX1 Eastern Indonesia in Austronesian Perspective: The Evidence of Relational Terminologies The Historical Delineation of “Eastern Indonesia” For the better part of two centuries, researchers, relying on different methods, have attempted to distinguish eastern Indonesia within the wider Austronesian archipelago. Alfred Russel Wallace in his Malay Archipelago (1869) was much concerned with the differences he claimed to perceive between Malay and Alfuru populations in the eastern archipelago. As a consequence, he drew not one but two distinct lines through eastern Indonesia. The irst of these lines, which has become known simply as the ‘Wallace Line’ was labelled the “Division between the Indo-Malayan and the Austro-Malayan Regions”. The second line, which extends much further to the east and separates Sumba, Flores and the Moluccan islands from the rest of the archipelago, represented his “Division between Malayan and Polynesian Races” (See Map in Volume I set between pages 14 and 15). -

10 CHAPTER ONE - Irian Jaya and its People This chapter will provide background information on the culture and way of life of the Dani people of Irian Jaya. The history of Western contact with Irian Jaya generally, leading up to missionary contact and the situation of the early national church, will be discussed as it provides a context in which to place the experience of the Western Dani. The information provided in this chapter is intended to acquaint the reader with certain aspects of Irian Jaya's history that will assist in the understanding of other topics to be discussed throughout this thesis. Cultural Background The most striking aspects of Irian Jaya are the physical contrasts between the low and highlands and the cultural diversity of the inhabitants. Officially there are at least 250 different ethnic groups in Irian Jaya,20 of which three are found in the Baliem Valley. The cultural, linguistic, geographical and climatic differences between the coastal lands and the highlands, and also within these areas themselves, are immense. Even amongst the Dani there is a distinct contrast between the Grand Valley Dani and the Western Dani. They differ from each other in a number of ways, one being in their attitudes. The Western Dani have the reputation of being more friendly and accepting, while the Grand Baliem Dani are said to be more aggressive and defensive. The Western Danis over time have moved from the Grand Valley up the North Baliem probably as a result of conflict and in search of new land for gardens, in an attempt to better their lives. -

Thc birth of Christ and His first corning are associated with PEACE in conformity with the song of the angels : "On earth pcace. goodwill toward men." In our present day the world seems to have departed further than it ever has before from the keynote ,of Christ's first coming : "Peace on earth." There seems at this time to b,e no place.~ on earth but that is afiected by the ravages of war, ,to which one could flee for peace. But as the Chr,istma,stiNdedraws near, those of us who by vntue of His first comin,g, have found inward soul peace, may look forward to His second c3,rning How comforting and refreshing it is to realize that the Prince of Peace Himxlf will one day rule this entire world. From Jerusalem He will bring pea,ce to striken Europe. to the new world of North and South America. and to the Far East : yea, even to the uttermost parts of the earth. At this Christmas time we may confi- dently expect that ere long He will come and establish His kingdom of peace on earth. It will be a time when men will "learn war no more." and when "the knowledge of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea.''
