CRUSOFTBALL 1 CCRURUSSOFTBALLOFTBALL 1 CCRUSADERRUSADEROOATHATH The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed a Student-Athlete Oath for the 2009-2010 academic and athletic year. The oath outlines the expectations accepted by all UMHB Student-Athletes and also details the pride those student- athletes feel to be a part of Cru Athletics. Student-athletes began using the oath for the fi rst time in the fall of 2009 and it became a prominent and permanent part of the UMHB Student- Athlete experience. The Cru Student-Athlete Oath is listed below:

CRUSOFTBALL 3 CCRURUSSOFTBALLOFTBALL 3 CCOACHOACHHHENNIGENNIG Larry Hennig has guided the Cru to a 209-130 overall record and a 135-60 mark in ASC West Division play in seven seasons as UMHB’s head coach. Hennig led the Cru to back-to-back ASC West Division titles and also shared ASC West Division Coaching Staff of the Year honors in each of his fi rst two seasons at the helm.

Hennig became the head softball coach at UMHB in August of 2010. Hennig comes to UMHB from Temple College, where he started the Leopard softball program 12 years ago. Hennig guided TC to a 519-203 record in those 12 seasons and he coached the Leopards to eight conference championships and three NJCAA National Tournament appearances. He coached 17 All-Americans during his tenure at TC and ranks among the top 25 active softball coaches in the NJCAA in career coaching victories. Hennig was named NFCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2006 after the Leopards were ranked #1 in the nation for four weeks.

Hennig graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1973 with a degree in education. He earned his Master’s of Education from Tarleton State University in 1988 and also completed his Mid-Management Certifi cation and Superintendent Certifi cation at Tarleton State. Hennig also earned an Associate’s Degree from McLennan Community College in 1971 and he was a baseball letterman for the Highlanders.

Hennig also spent eight years as the principal of Troy Middle School prior to joining Temple College. He coached football and taught world history at Temple High School from 1980-1988 and was the head baseball coach at Temple High for fi ve years. Hennig and his wife, Kathy, have one daughter.

4 CCRURUSSOFTBALLOFTBALL 4 CRUSOFTBALL CCOACHOACHMMALERALER Melissa Maler was named the Assistant Coach for the Uni- versity of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team in July 2015. Maler joins the Cru after spending the previous nine seasons as an assistant softball coach at West High School. The Lady Trojans won six district championships and appeared in four state tournaments during her tenure. Maler also coached volleyball and basketball during her time at West.

Maler is a 2005 graduate of Baylor University and she was a two-year letter winner and starter for the Baylor softball team. She played for two NCAA Tournament qualifi ers with the Bears and her game-winning double against North Carolina as a junior gave Baylor the fi rst NCAA postseason victory in the history of the Bears softball program. Maler was also an All-American softball player at Tem- ple College. She played for two Texas Junior College Northern Conference Champions under Hennig with the Leopards.

Maler is a native of West and has two daughters, Avery and Tagen.

Emily is studying biology at UMHB and hopes to become a physician. She partic- ipated in cross country, volleyball, powerlifting, basketball, track and softball at Moody High School. Emily was a state qualifi er in cross country, Setter of the Year in volleyball, all-district honoree in basketball, regional qualifi er in powerlifting, all- state qualifi er in track and all-state softball selection. She was also an academic all-district honoree in all six sports and participated in Beta Club, FCCLA and FCA. Emily is the daughter of Jesse and Rhonda Bounds. CeCe is studying physical therapy at UMHB. She played basketball and softball at Shiner High School. CeCe was a four-time Texas Sports Writers Association Player of the Year and First Team Pitcher, two-time State Champion, UIL Class 2A Most Valuable Player, Class 1-4A Athlete of the Year, Legacy Team, Pitcher of the Year, all-state honoree and academic all-state selection. CeCe was also an All-Area MVP, All-District MVP and pitched a perfect game in the 2016 Class 2A Softball State Championship. She also earned the 2016 UIL Scholar Award and was a regional qualifi er in UIL Academic Computer Applications. Additionally, she participated in FCA, National Honor Society and Student Council. Avery is a physical therapy major at UMHB. She was a four-year letter winner in bas- ketball and softball at Georgetown High School, where she helped her team to a state championship in basketball her freshman year. Avery was also a four-time all-district basketball player and served as team captain her junior and senior years. In softball, Avery was a four-time all-district selection, two-time regional semifi nalist and served as Student Athlete Representative for the State of Texas UIL rules committee. Avery was also a four-time academic all-district selection and two-time academic all-state honoree. She is the daughter of Jen Kelly. Hannah is a fi nance and accounting major at UMHB. She played softball at Rob- inson High School, where she was a three-time Super Cen-Tex team member, all-district pitcher, Newcomer of the Year, District Pitcher of the Year, District MVP, two-time all-state honoree and 2016 All Cen-Tex Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She played softball and volleyball at Elkhart High School, where she earned seven varsity letters. Camryn was a four- time all-district selection, two-time District MVP, three-time all-state selection and District Pitcher of the Year. She was also a two-time academic all-district honoree and pitched a perfect game her sophomore year. Camryn also participated in NHS, Student Council, Q&S, Interact, FCA and Spanish Club. She is the daughter of Brian and Krispen Rucker.

#15 KAREN CRANE JUNIOR, PITCHER, L/L, GRAND SALINE, TEXAS Karen is a nursing major at UMHB. She played softball, volleyball, basketball, track and cross country at Fruitvale High School, where she was named Pitcher of the Year, Off ensive MVP, District MVP and Defensive MVP as a softball player. Karen also earned all-district in basketball and was a three-time MVP in volleyball. Karen was also an academic all-state selection in basketball, softball and volleyball. She par- ticipated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society and is the daughter of Jerry and Mary Crane.

#24 TAYLOR HEWLETT JUNIOR, INFIELDER, R/R, HOUSTON, TEXAS Taylor is studying occupational therapy at UMHB. She was an all-district softball player at Langham Creek High School, where she also earned academic all-district honors and participated in Fred Club. Taylor also played two years of collegiate softball at Grayson Junior College and Clarendon Junior College, where she was an all-region honoree. Taylor is the daughter of Mark Hewlett and Rachel Hewlett.

#17 ANNABEL ANDERSON FRESHMAN, OUTFIELDER, R/R, MIDLOTHIAN, TEXAS Annabel is a physical therapy major at UMHB. She played softball and ran track at Midlothian High School, where she was a three-time all-district selection, Golden Glove winner and Off ensive MVP. Annabel also earned academic all-district honors all four years in softball and earned academic all-state in both softball and track her senior year. Annabel was a member of the National Honor Society and is the daughter of Christopher and Michelle Anderson.

#4 MORGAN BENGE FRESHMAN, CATCHER/INFIELDER, R/R, VAN, TEXAS Morgan is a physical therapy major at UMHB. She played volleyball and softball at Van High School, where she was an all-district selection, three-time Catcher of the Year, two-time All-East Texas honoree, two-time all-state catcher, MVP and Fighting Vandal. She was also an academic all-state selection and earned academic all-dis- trict honors all four years. Morgan was a member of National Honor Society and Key Club. She is the daughter of Craig and Holli Benge.

#21 MILLY CESARE FRESHMAN, INFIELDER, L/R, FRISCO, TEXAS Milly is a business major at UMHB. She played softball at Frisco Centennial High School, where she was a four-time all-district selection, Defensive Player of the Year and MVP. Milly was also a four-time academic all-district selection and member of National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Marc and Sandra Cesare.

#14 SKYLAR COOPER FRESHMAN, PITCHER/OF, R/R, CEDAR PARK, TEXAS Skylar is a pre-med major at UMHB. She was a four-time all-district softball player at Cedar Park High School, where she also earned academic all-district honors four times and academic all-state. Skylar was also a member of National Honor Society, English Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Rho Kappa, Science Honor Society and HOSA. She is the daughter of Christi Cooper.

#3 ALEXIS GALVAN FRESHMAN, OUTFIELDER, R/R, GRANDVIEW, TEXAS Alexis is a physical therapy major at UMHB. She played four years of varsity softball at Grandview High School, where she was an all-district, all-county and all-state selection. Alexis was also District MVP and Johnson County MVP. She was an aca- demic all-district and all-state award winner and member of UIL, National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Alexis also served as manager for the volleyball and basketball teams. She is the daughter of Danielle Monserrate.

#16 BAYLEIGH GROGAN FRESHMAN, PITCHER, R/R, WIMBERLEY, TEXAS Bayleigh is a physical therapy major at UMHB. She was a four-time all-district and two-time District MVP softball player at Wimberley High School, where she also earned academic all-district honors all four years and academic all-state honors her senior year. Bayleigh also participated in Leo Club, National Honor Society and Hands for Help. She is the daughter of Jason and Wendy Grogan.

#10 JESSI IVES FRESHMAN, INFIELDER, R/R, PALESTINE, TEXAS Jessi is a business major at UMHB. She played basketball and softball at Slocum High School, where she was a four-time all-district and two-time all-state honoree in softball. Jessi was also a four-time all-district, three-time District MVP, three-time all-region and two-time all-state selection in basketball. Jessi also earned academic all-district honors all four years and participated in FFA and Fellowship of Christian Atheltes. She is the daughter of David and Jennifer Ives.

She played volleyball and softball at Georgetown High School, where her softball honors include all-district, Team MVP and Team Newcomer of the Year. Jacqueline was also a four-time academic all-district selection and participated in HOSA and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is the daughter of Joe Kay and Brenda Kay.

#5 TAYGAN LANDREY FRESHMAN, OUTFIELDER, L/R, ROUND ROCK, TEXAS Taygan is a nursing major at UMHB. She played softball and volleyball at Cedar Ridge High School, where she was named Off ensive MVP and earned the Com- mitment and Dedication award. Taygan was also a four-time academic all-district selection and three-time underclassmen achievement award winner. She also par- ticipated in National Honor Society, Student Council, DECA, P.A.L.S and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is the daughter of Adam Landrey.

#23 KATHRYN REED FRESHMAN, PITCHER, R/R, AXTELL, TEXAS Kathryn is studying nursing at UMHB and wants to be a neonatal nurse. She par- ticipated in cross country, volleyball, basketball, track and softball at Axtell High School, where she earned 13 varsity letters. Kathryn was a regional qualifi er in cross country and helped her basketball team to two bi-district championships. In soft- ball, Kathryn was a four-time District MVP, four-time Super-CenTex team member, seven-time all-state honoree, Golden Glove Award Winner, 2015 Newcomer of the Year and 2018 Player of the Year. She was also a Scholar All-American and partici- pated in National Honor Society, Student Council, Cheerleading, Band and Fellow- ship of Christian Athletes. Kathryn is the daughter of Dwayne and Marci Reed.

DR. RANDY O’REAR, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Randy O’Rear became the 22nd president of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor when he assumed the offi ce on June 1, 2009. O’Rear was named President and CEO of the university in a unanimous decision by the school’s Board of Trustees in September 2008. Dr. O’Rear is the fi rst of president of UMHB who is also an alumnus of the university. He graduated from UMHB with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1988 and earned an MBA from UMHB in 1997. O’Rear earned a doctoral degree in Higher Education from Baylor University in 2004.

O’Rear has served at UMHB since 1988, most recently as executive vice president and chief operating offi cer. For more than 18 years, O’Rear has been actively involved in fundraising for the university. Under his leadership, gifts and grants dramatically increased, numerous endowed scholarships were established and major capital projects were completed, including the construction of the Parker Academic Center, the Mayborn Campus Center and the new Meyer Christian Studies Center.

O’Rear has also strong ties to the UMHB athletic department. He was also a two-year letterman for the UMHB baseball program as a right-handed pitcher. O’Rear held the school record for wins in a season for fi ve years before that mark was broken in 1992. He also spent one year as a student assistant coach and two years as a full-time assistant coach for the Cru baseball team.

Originally from Waco, O’Rear is a graduate of Robinson High School. He and his wife, Julie, have three children, Ryan, Taylor and Reed. They live in Belton and are members of First Baptist Church, Belton, where O’Rear serves as deacon.

RANDY MANN, VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS

Randy Mann was promoted to Vice President for Athletics in May of 2012 after serving as full- time Associate Athletic Director for four years. He spent the previous eight years serving as head men’s golf coach and associate AD. Coach Mann guided the Cru to the American Southwest Conference championship in 2008 and closed out his coaching career by guiding the Cru to the fi rst NCAA Division III National Tournament berth in the program’s history. Mann also led the Cru to ASC championships in 2005 and 2001. The fi rst conference championship was the fi rst conference title in the history of the UMHB men’s golf program. The Crusaders never fi n- ished lower than fourth in the ASC Tournament during Mann’s tenure in Belton. The Crusaders also narrowly missed earning the fi rst NCAA Division III National Championship berth in the program’s history in the spring of 2004, although Dillon Gooch qualifi ed as an individual to become the fi rst UMHB men’s golfer to compete in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Coach Mann came to UMHB from Temple High School, where he spent the seven years as head coach of the boys and girls golf teams. Coach Mann spent a total of 19 years teaching and coaching in the Temple Independent School District. He took the Temple boys golf team to 4 district titles and 2 district runner-ups fi nishes in his 7 years as coach. In that same time, Coach Mann took the girls team to 3 district titles and 3 district runner-up fi nishes. The teams only missed the regional tournament once each during Coach Mann’s tenure.

Randy Mann is a 1980 graduate of Tarleton State University in Stephenville, and he received his master’s degree from Tarleton in 1998. He and his wife, Caroline, have three sons, Mitchell, Michael, and Marshall.
